Taxonomy & naming
Bario australis was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1908. The type locality is the arroyos Trementina and Chagalalina in the Río Paraguay basin of Paraguay, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises Eigenmann, 1908 as the authority. The species belongs to the large and taxonomically challenging genus Moenkhausia, one of the most species-rich genera in the family Characidae.
A phylogenetic treatment published in Zootaxa (Bioentities reference: zootaxa.4688.2.3) examined B. australis within a broader revision of related Moenkhausia taxa and found it to be a distinct and diagnosable species. That study noted three genetically structured populations corresponding to the Río Paraguay, upper Paraná, and Río Madeira (Río Guaporé and Río Mamoré) drainages. This population structure may eventually inform further taxonomic revision, but B. australis currently stands as a single species across this range.
Within the genus, B. australis is distinguished from the superficially similar M. sanctaefilomenae by its transversal scale series count of 5/5 (versus 4/4 in M. sanctaefilomenae), a complete pored lateral line, and a body that is compressed and moderately short in profile.
This fish was long listed as Moenkhausia australis; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Bario, and the current combination Bario australis is followed here.
Morphology
Bario australis reaches a maximum recorded size of approximately 2.45 in standard length, placing it in the mid-size range for the genus. The body is laterally compressed and moderately short in depth — compact rather than deep-bodied — a shape typical of many rheophilic or open-water small characids in Moenkhausia.
Key diagnostic characters include the complete pored lateral line and a transversal scale series count of 5/5, which together separate it reliably from M. sanctaefilomenae in the field.
