A small characid from the upper Tapajós drainage of Mato Grosso, Brazil, Bario skolioplatus was described from the rio Doze de Outubro near Comodora in 2005 and remains one of the less well-known members of a large and taxonomically busy genus. Its story has grown more complicated with time: a 2024 reclassification by Melo and colleagues transferred the species into the genus Bario, reflecting a broader effort to align Moenkhausia — long a catch-all for small characids — with the evidence of molecular phylogenetics. The species carries a Data Deficient assessment from the IUCN, a status that reflects genuine scarcity of field data rather than confirmed scarcity in the wild.

Taxonomy & naming

Bario skolioplatus was originally described in 2005 by Luiz Roberto Malabarba's collaborators Vinicius Bertaco and Tiago Carvalho, in a paper published in Comunicações do Museu de Ciências e Tecnologia da PUCRS, Série Zoologia (volume 18, pp. 141–150). The species was placed at the time in Hemigrammus under the original combination Hemigrammus skolioplatus, and was subsequently moved into Moenkhausia — hence the current parenthetical-free authority notation when it was treated as a Moenkhausia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) now records the valid name as Bario skolioplatus (Bertaco & Carvalho, 2005), following a 2024 reclassification by Melo et al. that dispersed many Moenkhausia species into better-supported genera. The holotype is deposited as MCP 38389.

The genus Moenkhausia itself is one of the largest in Characidae, with well over a hundred nominal species spanning South America. It has long been a taxonomic repository for small, silvery or modestly patterned characids that share a scaled caudal peduncle and other plesiomorphic characters, making it polyphyletic under modern molecular analyses. The genus Bario, which now receives skolioplatus, was erected or resurrected as part of the ongoing effort to produce a monophyletic arrangement consistent with phylogenomic data.

The specific epithet skolioplatus derives from the Greek skolios (curved, crooked) and platos (flat, broad), likely referencing a morphological feature of the type material, though detailed etymology was not captured in available sources. No widely used common name has been recorded for this species.

This fish was long listed as Moenkhausia skolioplatus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Bario, and the current combination Bario skolioplatus is followed here.

Morphology

Morphological data for Bario skolioplatus in the published literature is limited to the original description, and no detailed secondary accounts have been widely disseminated. The species is a small characid consistent in general body plan with other members of its former genus: laterally compressed, roughly fusiform, with the scaled caudal peduncle and standard Characidae fin arrangement.

Beyond the features noted in the original description, no size data have been confirmed in the sources reviewed. FishBase does not list a maximum standard length for this species, and data on coloration in life, fin ray counts, and other meristic details are not available in hobbyist literature. Available information is insufficient to characterize the species beyond its assignment to Characidae and its Tapajós origin.

Habitat

The type locality is the rio Doze de Outubro, a tributary within the upper Tapajós drainage, at or near the town of Comodora on highway BR-364 in Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The upper Tapajós basin drains the southern portion of the Brazilian Shield in Mato Grosso and is a region of cerrado and transition forest, characterized by clear- to blackwater streams with sandy or rocky substrates.

FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic in tropical freshwater, reflecting the modest habitat inference that can be drawn from its family and geography rather than detailed field surveys. No specific habitat characterization — vegetation type, water chemistry, depth range, or seasonal flooding pattern — has been published for this species in the sources reviewed. The upper Tapajós drainage as a whole is notable for high fish diversity and a significant proportion of endemics, particularly among small characids.

Feeding

No diet data are available for Bario skolioplatus. FishBase records no feeding information for the species, and no field or aquarium observations have been published in the sources reviewed.

By inference from its family and size class, it is likely an omnivore taking small invertebrates, microcrustaceans, and organic particulates in the manner typical of small Amazonian characids — but this is inference rather than documented fact. Mating

No mating or reproductive behaviour data have been documented for Bario skolioplatus. The species has not been bred in captivity in any published account, and field observations of reproductive activity are absent from the literature reviewed.

By analogy with closely related small characids, egg-scattering open spawning among fine-leaved vegetation with no parental care would be the expected reproductive mode — the typical pattern across the tribe Moenkhausiini and Characidae broadly. Until specific observations are recorded, however, any account of its mating behaviour would be extrapolation.

Breeding

No breeding data exist for Bario skolioplatus in either field or aquarium contexts. FishBase records no maturity, fecundity, or spawning data. The species has not been established in the hobby to a degree that has generated published husbandry accounts.

The expected pattern for a small Amazonian characid of this type — adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs scattered among fine-leaved plants, short incubation period, small fry requiring fine live foods — is consistent with many related species, but cannot be stated as fact for this taxon without direct observation.

In the aquarium

Bario skolioplatus is not established in the aquarium hobby and is not commercially available through normal hobbyist channels. No care accounts, maintenance temperatures, or tank requirements have been published for the species. It has not appeared in trade literature or specialist hobbyist forums in any meaningful way.

Aquarists who encounter this species through scientific contacts or field collection would be working from first principles: the general husbandry expectations for a small, benthopelagic Tapajós characid — warm, soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, live or frozen small invertebrates, a well-planted tank with gentle flow — are a reasonable starting framework, but represent informed inference rather than tested practice.

Conservation

Bario skolioplatus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) by the IUCN, with the assessment based on a 2018 review. Data Deficient does not mean the species is unaffected by pressures; it means that the information available is insufficient to determine its threat status. In practice, for a narrowly described small characid from a single type locality, it often reflects the absence of systematic post-description surveys rather than confirmed abundance.

The upper Tapajós drainage faces the pressures typical of Amazonian frontier zones in Mato Grosso: agricultural expansion, deforestation, and the associated sedimentation and hydrological alteration of smaller tributaries. The region around BR-364 has seen significant land-use change since the species was collected. Whether populations of B. skolioplatus persist in the rio Doze de Outubro or adjacent tributaries, and at what density, is not known from published surveys. An upgraded IUCN assessment would require targeted field surveys at and around the type locality.
