Taxonomy & naming
Eretmobrycon gonzalezoi was described by C. Román-Valencia in 2002 as a new species within the genus Bryconamericus (Characidae). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (the authority for valid names in ichthyology) records it under the authority Román-Valencia, 2002. The genus Bryconamericus, erected by Eigenmann in 1907, belongs to the subfamily Stevardiinae within the large family Characidae and encompasses dozens of species distributed across montane and foothill drainages throughout South America.
The genus has undergone considerable taxonomic revision in recent decades, with numerous species described from Colombian river systems in particular. Román-Valencia was responsible for describing several new Bryconamericus species from Colombia in the early 2000s, and E. gonzalezoi is among them. The species epithet gonzalezi is a patronym, most likely honouring a person with the surname González or Gonzalez, though the details of the dedication are not widely reproduced in secondary literature.
This fish was long listed as Bryconamericus gonzalezi; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Eretmobrycon, and the current combination Eretmobrycon gonzalezoi is followed here.
Morphology
As a member of Bryconamericus, E. gonzalezoi is expected to conform to the genus's general body plan: a small, slender to moderately deep-bodied characin, laterally compressed, with the typical characid complement of teeth and fin arrangement. Species in this genus typically reach 1.6–2.8 in standard length, are silvery on the flanks with a dark mid-lateral stripe of variable intensity, and possess a small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal. The caudal fin is forked and often bears dark pigment on the lobes.
Detailed morphometric and meristic data for E. gonzalezoi specifically are not widely reproduced in accessible secondary sources. Colombian Bryconamericus are typically recorded from relatively cool, well-oxygenated streams at elevations where water temperatures range from the mid-teens to low twenties Celsius, and water chemistry is moderately soft to moderately hard depending on the geological substrate of the catchment. Feeding
Members of Bryconamericus are opportunistic omnivores that consume a mix of aquatic invertebrates, terrestrial insects falling onto the water surface, algae, and organic detritus. Eretmobrycon gonzalezoi has not been reported in the aquarium trade and no captive-breeding accounts appear in hobby or scientific literature. Based on the reproductive biology of closely related Bryconamericus species, spawning would be expected to involve egg-scattering over gravel or fine substrate in well-oxygenated, moderately cool water, with no parental care. Adults would readily consume eggs.
If captive breeding were attempted, the approaches used for other small Andean characins would apply as a starting framework: a separate breeding vessel with clean, oxygenated water in the mid-to-upper teens or low twenties Celsius, spawning substrate such as fine gravel or Java moss to receive eggs, and removal of adults after spawning. Data sparse — no confirmed captive-breeding records are known to the editors.
In the aquarium
Eretmobrycon gonzalezoi is not established in the ornamental fish trade. The species is known from scientific collections and is not commercially available; the research cache confirms it does not appear in major hobby databases such as Seriously Fish. Any aquarist keeping a Bryconamericus species from Colombia would most likely have wild-collected specimens obtained through specialist channels or research exchange.
Generally, small Bryconamericus species do best in species tanks or community setups with similarly sized, peaceful characins and non-aggressive tankmates, in well-filtered, oxygenated water replicating cool Andean stream conditions. A sandy or fine-gravel substrate with some current and open swimming space suits the genus. For E. gonzalezoi specifically, no husbandry guidance exists in accessible literature; the recommendations here are extrapolated from the genus and its Colombian stream ecology.
Conservation
Eretmobrycon gonzalezoi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List — it is listed as Not Evaluated (NE). This is the case for the majority of Bryconamericus species and indeed for much of the remarkable diversity of small Colombian stream fishes: the sheer number of species, combined with limited survey data outside of the original description localities, means formal conservation assessments have not been completed.
Colombia hosts exceptional freshwater fish biodiversity, particularly in the Andean drainages, but this biodiversity faces ongoing pressure from deforestation, agricultural runoff, sedimentation, and hydroelectric development across the Andean foothills. Stream-dwelling characins like E. gonzalezoi, if restricted to a limited range, can be particularly vulnerable to local habitat degradation. Its conservation status, in the absence of an assessment, is best regarded as unknown rather than secure.
