Taxonomy & naming
Eretmobrycon guaytarae was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Arthur Henn in 1914. The type specimen is housed at the California Academy of Sciences Ichthyology collection (CAS ICH). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Eretmobrycon guaytarae Eigenmann & Henn, 1914; the species has remained in Bryconamericus since its original description and no subsequent transfer has altered the authority.
The specific epithet guaytarae refers to the Guaitara (Guaytara) River, a tributary of the Patía drainage in the Colombia–Ecuador border region that forms part of the species' known range. Bryconamericus is a large neotropical genus within the family Characidae, uniting small to medium-sized stream characins distributed broadly across South America. The genus is distinguished from the larger Brycon by reduced size and from related small characids by a suite of scale and dentition characters. Taxonomic revision within Bryconamericus is ongoing, and species limits and relationships within the genus remain an active area of systematic research.

Morphology
Eretmobrycon guaytarae is a slender, fusiform characid reaching a maximum recorded total length of 3.3 in. Like most members of the genus it is moderately laterally compressed with a silvery body, a small but distinct adipose fin, and the forked tail typical of active-water characins. The lateral line is complete and the scales are cycloid. Dentition is characteristically characid, with small teeth on both jaws.
Colouration in life is predominantly silver, often with a faint dusky lateral stripe or suffusion along the midline that may intensify toward the caudal peduncle. There is no bold terminal spot on the caudal base of the kind seen in many tetra species, though preserved specimens and live colouring may differ under different conditions. Sexual dimorphism is not well documented for this species; females of Bryconamericus species generally tend toward a slightly deeper, more rounded body profile when gravid, as is common across the genus.
Habitat
Eretmobrycon guaytarae is native to the Patía River basin, a drainage that rises in the Colombian Andes and cuts south toward the Pacific through the Ecuador–Colombia border region. Within that system the species occupies freshwater streams typical of Andean foothill and lower-montane environments — moderate-current, well-oxygenated watercourses at elevations spanning roughly 39–3084 ft above sea level, based on habitat data from ecologically similar Bryconamericus species on the western Andean slope.
The streams of the Patía catchment are generally clear to slightly turbid with substrates of gravel, sand, and leaf litter. Water temperatures in Andean Pacific-slope drainages at these elevations are cooler than purely lowland systems. As a freshwater obligate with no tolerance for brackish conditions, E. guaytarae is entirely dependent on the river network of this drainage.
Feeding
Bryconamericus species on the western Andean slope are omnivores with a broad dietary tolerance. Studies of ecologically comparable congeners document feeding on seeds and vegetable matter, terrestrial and aquatic insects, and small invertebrates. This generalist feeding strategy is consistent with the opportunistic foraging typical of small characids occupying riffle and run habitats, where dietary composition shifts seasonally with flood pulse and food availability.
In the aquarium, related Bryconamericus species accept a wide range of prepared and live foods — flake, small pellets, frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm and Daphnia, and finely chopped plant material. There are no published diet studies specifically for E. guaytarae, so these inferences rest on congener data and the general biology of the genus.
Mating
No mating behaviour has been specifically described for Eretmobrycon guaytarae. Based on the reproductive biology of other Bryconamericus species and of small Andean characids more broadly, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner. Males of related species pursue females during spawning events, with fertilisation occurring as eggs are released over substrate or vegetation with no pair bond formation.
Spawning in Andean stream characids is often associated with seasonal hydrological cues — rising water levels at the onset of the rainy season trigger reproductive activity in many species. Whether E. guaytarae follows a strictly seasonal pattern or spawns opportunistically under suitable conditions is not documented in the available literature.
Breeding
Eretmobrycon guaytarae has not been reported as captive-bred in the aquarium literature, and no species-specific breeding account is available. The reproductive mode inferred for the species — egg-scattering with no parental care — is consistent with that of the broader Bryconamericus group and with general characid biology. Embryonic development in related small characids at approximately 82 °F proceeds rapidly, with hatching typically within 24–48 hours and larvae becoming free-swimming within a few days.
Adults offer no parental care and will consume eggs given the opportunity. In a captive setting, eggs deposited over fine-leaved plants or a substrate of gravel and leaf litter would need to be isolated from adults to maximise survival. The fry of small Andean characids are generally small at hatching and require fine first foods such as infusoria or rotifers before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.
In the aquarium
Eretmobrycon guaytarae is essentially absent from the commercial aquarium trade, and the species is unlikely to be encountered outside specialist collections or ichthyological research contexts. Its ecology — moderate-current Andean streams at foothill elevations — suggests it would prefer cooler, well-oxygenated water with good flow rather than the warm, still conditions suited to most tropical tetras.
If maintained, a species-appropriate setup would emphasise current, high dissolved oxygen, and a temperature range consistent with its native Andean drainage — likely in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius. A sandy or fine-gravel substrate with leaf litter and some marginal cover would approximate its natural habitat. As a small, active schooling characid it would be expected to thrive in a group of six or more, and its peaceful disposition should make it compatible with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. Given the absence of trade availability and hobby documentation, all aquarium observations for this species remain inferential.
Conservation
Eretmobrycon guaytarae is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. The Patía basin, while subject to ongoing land-use change, agriculture, and hydrological modification in the Colombian and Ecuadorean Andes, supports a range of characid species and has not been identified as a critical area of endemism concern for this particular taxon. Data on population size and trend for E. guaytarae are limited.
Andean Pacific-slope drainages face long-term pressure from deforestation, agricultural runoff, and water extraction, all of which can alter the stream-flow and water-quality conditions on which montane characids depend. While no specific conservation measures target E. guaytarae, the health of the Patía catchment more broadly determines the long-term prospects for this and the many other endemic stream fishes of the region.
