Eretmobrycon scleroparius is a small, schooling characid native to the coastal river drainages of Panama, Costa Rica, and the Pacific-slope rivers of Ecuador — a range spanning the narrow land bridge between the Americas and the adjacent South American foothills. Described by C. T. Regan in 1908, it belongs to the genus Bryconamericus, a widespread and species-rich group of tetras found across Central and South America. Reaching up to 11 cm in total length, it is an omnivorous, benthopelagic fish of creeks and streams at elevations from near sea level to around 600 m, tolerant of moderate current and occasionally found in still-water habitats. It has no established trade name in the aquarium hobby and has never been formally evaluated by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Eretmobrycon scleroparius was originally described by Charles Tate Regan in 1908, with the type specimen placed in the genus Tetragonopterus as Tetragonopterus scleroparius. The species has since accumulated several synonyms recorded in GBIF: Eretmobrycon scleroparius and Bryconamericus ricae Eigenmann, 1908 are both listed as junior synonyms under the currently accepted combination Eretmobrycon scleroparius (Regan, 1908). The parenthetical authority signals that the valid name rests in a different genus from the one Regan originally used.

The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the family Characidae and comprises a large number of small, silvery tetras distributed throughout Central and South America. A significant taxonomic note from Roman-Valencia et al. (2011), cited in the DePaul Ecuador field guide, restricts E. scleroparius in a strict sense to Panama and Costa Rica; Ecuadorian records attributed to this species — chiefly from the Esmeraldas and Guayas basins on the Pacific slope — may represent misidentified congeners or undescribed taxa rather than true E. scleroparius. This unresolved question means the exact geographic limits of the species remain somewhat uncertain pending further revisionary work.

Like most Bryconamericus species, it carries the typical characid body plan: a small adipose fin posterior to the dorsal, a forked tail, and the complete lateral line characteristic of the group. Its size of up to 4.3 in TL means it requires a moderately spacious aquarium; a tank of 35.4 in or more in length would be appropriate for a small group.

Water parameters consistent with its native range — temperatures of 70–86 °F and a neutral to slightly acidic pH — are suitable starting points, though specific conductivity and hardness data for the species are not available. As an active, mid-water schooling fish, open swimming space is more important than heavy planting, though marginal vegetation and some shading would reflect its natural stream habitat.
