Taxonomy & naming
Eretmobrycon simus was originally described as Tetragonopterus simus by George Albert Boulenger in 1898. The type locality recorded in the original description is the Río Bobonaza at Sarayacu, in what is now the Pastaza province of Ecuador, a tributary system feeding into the Marañón and ultimately the Amazon. The species was subsequently transferred to the genus Bryconamericus, where it has remained under the valid combination Eretmobrycon simus (Boulenger, 1898). The parenthetical authority reflects that transfer from the original genus.
Bryconamericus is a large and heterogeneous neotropical characid genus whose limits and internal relationships have been subject to ongoing revision. The genus name combines the Greek bryko (to bite or gnash) with a latinisation of America, broadly signifying a biting or toothy American characin. The specific epithet simus is Latin for flat-nosed or pug-nosed, likely referring to a profile feature of the snout or premaxilla observed in the type specimens. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the authority for the currently accepted name.

Morphology
Eretmobrycon simus is a small, slender-bodied characid reaching a maximum total length of approximately 3.4 in, consistent with the benthopelagic lifestyle of genus members that occupy both the water column and areas near the substrate in flowing water. The body is laterally compressed in the typical characid fashion, with a moderately pointed snout, a terminal mouth, and the small adipose fin characteristic of the family.
Detailed published meristic and morphometric data for this species are sparse in the accessible hobby and general literature; most of what is recorded derives from the original description and aggregated database entries. Like other members of Bryconamericus, it is presumed to carry small conical teeth and a relatively plain, silver-bodied livery with a lateral stripe, though colouration specifics are not well documented outside the primary systematic literature. Habitat
The species is native to the Amazon River basin, with the type locality at the Río Bobonaza near Sarayacu in eastern Ecuador. Aquarists attempting to breed related benthopelagic small characids typically condition adults on a varied diet including live or frozen foods, provide fine-leaved spawning medium, and remove adults promptly after spawning to prevent egg predation. Eretmobrycon simus is essentially unknown in the mainstream aquarium hobby and is not available through normal commercial channels. It does not appear to have received coverage on major hobbyist species databases, and no husbandry accounts have been published. Any specimens that might be maintained would almost certainly be held by researchers or specialist collectors working with western Amazonian ichthyofauna.
By analogy with other small, plain-bodied western Amazonian characids of similar size, the species would likely be manageable in a moderately sized aquarium with soft to slightly hard, warm, well-oxygenated freshwater. A planted aquarium with some current, dim-to-moderate lighting, and a group of conspecifics for schooling would approximate conditions suited to the genus. The species' limited public profile means no specific care rating can be assigned with confidence.

Eretmobrycon simus has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List; FishBase records its conservation status as Data Deficient (DD), reflecting the absence of a dedicated evaluation rather than a formal assessment of population trends.
