Eretmobrycon peruanus is a small, slender characid of Pacific-slope rivers from Peru to Ecuador, best known to field biologists as the 'sardina' — the silvery baitfish of the western Andean foothills. First described from near Lima in 1845, the species has had a complex taxonomic history and was reclassified into the genus Eretmobrycon by Malabarba in 2024, yet it remains widely listed under its long-familiar name in aquarium literature. Reaching up to about 9–12 cm, it is an omnivore of considerable ecological value in the stream systems of western Ecuador and northern Peru, though it has never attracted significant hobby interest or earned a formal IUCN conservation assessment.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was first described as Tetragonopterus peruanus by Müller and Troschel in 1845, from type material collected near Lima, Peru (syntypes ZMB 3591–92, held in the Zoologisches Museum Berlin). It was later transferred to Bryconamericus, a broad holding genus for a diverse assemblage of small South American characids, where it remained for most of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries under the combination Eretmobrycon peruanus (Müller & Troschel, 1845).

Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the primary authority for valid names followed by this site, records a significant recent revision: in 2024 Malabarba reclassified the species as Eretmobrycon peruanus, placing it in the subfamily Landoninae within the family Stevardiidae. This realignment reflects a broader reassessment of South American characid phylogeny that has split the old Bryconamericus assemblage across several genera and families. Until this reclassification is universally adopted in reference databases, the name Eretmobrycon peruanus will continue to appear in hobby and aggregator sources, and the species is presented here under that familiar combination.

The genus name Bryconamericus references the bryconin characids of the Americas (Greek bryko, 'to bite', combined with the continent name), while the specific epithet peruanus — Peruvian — records the country of the type locality.

This fish was long listed as Bryconamericus peruanus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Eretmobrycon, and the current combination Eretmobrycon peruanus is followed here.

Morphology

Eretmobrycon peruanus is a slender, fusiform characid typical of the small-tetra body plan. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 3.6 in, while an older measurement by Eigenmann (1929) gives up to 4.9 in; most wild specimens encountered are smaller. The body is moderately compressed laterally, with a blunt snout, terminal mouth, and the adipose fin characteristic of characiforms.

Meristic counts from specimens from western Ecuador include 25–27 anal fin rays and 37–38 lateral-line scales. Ground coloration is silvery, often with a faint dusky lateral stripe or diffuse midlateral band running from the opercle toward the caudal peduncle. The caudal fin is forked. No significant sexual dimorphism has been documented in the published literature, though females of related species are often slightly deeper-bodied when ripe. Overall the species is plain and baitfish-like in appearance, offering little in the way of dramatic ornamentation.

Habitat

Eretmobrycon peruanus occupies freshwater streams and rivers of the Pacific slope in Peru and Ecuador. Its documented range spans the Amazon Basin headwaters and the separate Pacific-draining Guayas, Esmeraldas, and Santiago river basins of western Ecuador — a drainage system notably isolated from the main Amazonian watershed by the Andes. The DePaul Freshwater Fishes of Western Ecuador project notes the species is common along the western Andean slope of Ecuador.

FishBase characterises the species as benthopelagic and tropical, occurring in freshwater environments. The rivers and streams of western Ecuador where it is found range from lowland coastal plains to foothill habitats, typically with moderate current, clear-to-slightly-turbid water, and a substrate of sand, gravel, and larger stones. Specific water-chemistry data (temperature, pH) are sparse in the available literature, but the tropical Pacific-slope setting implies warm, soft-to-moderately hard water with pH values roughly neutral to slightly acidic in most river reaches.

Feeding

Eretmobrycon peruanus is an omnivore. The DePaul western Ecuador fish guide characterises it as a small omnivorous characid, consistent with the feeding ecology documented for most small Bryconamericus and allied genera in South American stream communities. In the field, comparable species feed on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, algae, diatoms, detritus, and plant matter that enter the water column or are gleaned from benthic surfaces.

The species is described as ecologically important in its range. Despite being locally abundant in parts of western Ecuador, it is not exploited as a food fish there, attributed to its small size. Its role as prey for larger fish in the food web of Pacific-slope rivers is likely its principal ecological significance in the region.

Mating

No published studies specifically document the mating behaviour of Eretmobrycon peruanus in the wild. By analogy with well-studied members of the broader bryconine and stevardiid characid assemblage, the species is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care — the typical reproductive strategy of small, schooling characids across South America.

Males and females of such species aggregate in the water column during spawning events, which in many stream-dwelling characids are triggered by seasonal cues such as rising water levels, temperature change, or photoperiod. No hobbyist or scientific accounts of observed courtship behaviour for this species were located in the available sources.

Breeding

Eretmobrycon peruanus has not been bred in captivity to any documented degree, and no breeding accounts appear in the hobby literature. Eretmobrycon peruanus is essentially unknown in the ornamental fish trade. The DePaul source confirms it is not exploited as a food fish in its native range due to its small size, and it has not attracted the attention given to colourful or behaviourally distinctive characids. No care guides specific to this species exist in the hobby literature, and it is unlikely to be encountered in aquarium shops outside of specialist importers dealing in wild South American stream fishes.

For aquarists who might obtain it incidentally — for instance, as part of a mixed collection from Ecuadorian or Peruvian streams — it would be expected to be hardy and adaptable within the parameters of a typical small-tetra setup: a well-filtered tank with some open swimming space, neutral to slightly acidic water, tropical temperatures, fine-leaved plants, and a diet of small live, frozen, and prepared foods. Being a schooling species, it should be kept in groups of six or more. Its modest appearance means it is best appreciated for its natural history interest rather than display value.

Conservation

Eretmobrycon peruanus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List, and its conservation status is formally recorded as Not Evaluated (NE). This gap is not unusual for small, widespread stream fishes in South America, where the sheer number of species makes comprehensive assessment difficult. The species' range across multiple river basins in Peru and Ecuador, and its reported abundance in parts of western Ecuador, suggests it is not immediately at risk, though no population trend data are available.

The rivers of western Ecuador's Pacific slope face ongoing pressures from agricultural runoff, deforestation of riparian zones, and water abstraction, all of which affect stream-dwelling fish communities.
