Morphology
Megalamphodus micropterus is a small, laterally compressed characid with a maximum recorded standard length of 1.1 in in males and unsexed specimens, making it one of the smaller species in the genus. The body is relatively slender compared with the deep-bodied haemoglobin-bright tetras of the hobby mainstream. Like most Hyphessobrycon, it possesses an adipose fin and a complete or near-complete lateral line.

Feeding
Like other small Hyphessobrycon, M. micropterus is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore in the wild, taking small invertebrates — zooplankton, insect larvae, and microcrustaceans — alongside any available plant or detrital material. Its small mouth limits the size of prey it can take, and fine zooplankton and micro-invertebrates likely dominate the diet.
In the aquarium it should accept high-quality fine-grained flake or micro-pellet foods without difficulty. As with most small characids, condition and colour are improved by supplementing the diet with small live or frozen foods such as newly hatched brine shrimp, micro-worms, or Daphnia. Breeding
