Psalidodon hamatus is a small characid tetra described by Luiz Roberto Malabarba and Vinicius Abilhoa Bertaco in 2005 from the rio Uruguay basin of southern Brazil. One of several new Astyanax species diagnosed by those authors in a productive revision of the genus in that drainage, it belongs to a vast and taxonomically complex lineage that spans virtually all freshwater systems east of the Andes. Data on this species in the wild and in the aquarium trade remain sparse; it is essentially a fish of the ichthyological record.

Taxonomy & naming

Psalidodon hamatus was described by Vinicius Abilhoa Bertaco and Luiz Roberto Malabarba in 2005 as part of a systematic revision of Astyanax from the rio Uruguay system in southern South America. The valid name, as maintained in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Psalidodon hamatus Bertaco & Malabarba, 2005; both authors are credited without parentheses because the species was described directly in Astyanax, where it remains.

Astyanax is one of the largest and most taxonomically intractable genera in Characidae, with well over 100 valid species distributed across Middle and South America. Species boundaries within the genus have shifted repeatedly as morphological and, more recently, molecular analyses have clarified or collapsed earlier diagnoses. P. hamatus is distinguished from its congeners in the Uruguay drainage on the basis of meristic and morphometric characters detailed in the original description; without access to the type series, assignment of living or traded specimens is not straightforward. No junior synonyms are recorded.

This fish was long listed as Astyanax hamatus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Psalidodon, and the current combination Psalidodon hamatus is followed here.

Morphology

Psalidodon hamatus is a small, fusiform characid with the generalised body plan common to much of the genus: moderately compressed, with a single dorsal fin, an adipose fin, and the forked caudal fin typical of Characidae. The species presents the lateral line, scale counts, and fin-ray counts that characterise the original diagnosis, but detailed morphometric data from the published description are not reproduced here.

Colouration in life is not extensively documented in the available literature. Like many Astyanax of the Uruguay system, P. hamatus presumably carries the lateral stripe or humeral spot pattern common in the genus, but specific colour notes from the type series are not confirmed in secondary sources. Maximum size is not firmly established in accessible data; congeners in the Uruguay basin typically reach 2–3.9 in standard length, and P. hamatus is likely in a similar range, but a cited figure is unavailable. Habitat

Psalidodon hamatus is known from the rio Uruguay drainage in the southern portion of Brazil, a major river system that forms the border between Rio Grande do Sul state and Argentina before entering the Río de la Plata estuary. The rio Uruguay and its tributaries drain a subtropical landscape of rolling hills, gallery forests, and seasonal wetlands; water temperatures range broadly with latitude and season, from roughly 57 °F in winter to above 82 °F in summer.

The genus Astyanax in this drainage occupies a range of lotic and lentic microhabitats — pools, riffles, marginal vegetation, and stream edges — and is often associated with submerged woody debris or aquatic macrophytes. Specific habitat preferences for P. hamatus within the Uruguay system have not been documented in secondary sources reviewed for this article. The species shares its range with a diverse small-fish fauna including other Astyanax, Hyphessobrycon, Bryconamericus, and various callichthyid and loricariid catfishes.

Feeding

No published dietary study specific to Psalidodon hamatus is available. Members of Astyanax are broadly omnivorous, opportunistic generalists that consume small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, plant material, algae, and organic detritus in proportion to local availability. Gut-content studies of congeners in comparable subtropical South American drainages show that plant matter (seeds, fruits, filamentous algae) can constitute a substantial fraction of the diet alongside arthropods and small crustaceans.

In an aquarium setting, fish of this genus and size class accept flake food, small pelleted diets, and frozen or live invertebrates such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and chironomid larvae without difficulty. A mixed diet that includes vegetable matter and live or frozen foods will support good condition, though detailed captive-feeding observations specific to P. hamatus are not on record.

Mating

No species-specific reproductive data are published for Psalidodon hamatus. The genus Astyanax reproduces by open egg-scattering without parental care, a strategy consistent across the larger Characidae. Spawning in related species is triggered by seasonal cues — rising water temperature and changing photoperiod in spring and early summer in subtropical South America, or the onset of wet-season flooding in tropical relatives.

Males typically pursue females and spawning occurs in motion, with eggs and milt released into open water or over fine-leaved vegetation. Fertilised eggs are non-adhesive or lightly adhesive and sink or drift among substrate and plant material. No pair bond forms and no territory is maintained; spawning groups rather than isolated pairs are the norm in the genus.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Psalidodon hamatus has not been documented in the accessible hobby or scientific literature. By analogy with other small Astyanax from subtropical South American drainages, successful breeding would be expected to follow the standard characid protocol: a species-only or small-group tank with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, a slight drop in temperature followed by a gradual warm-up to simulate seasonal cues, and removal of adults after spawning to prevent egg predation.

Eggs of congeners typically hatch within 24–48 hours at subtropical temperatures, and fry become free-swimming within a few days of hatching. First foods for the very small fry should be infusoria or commercial liquid fry food, graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii as the fish grow. No clutch-size estimates or incubation data specific to P. hamatus are confirmed.

In the aquarium

Psalidodon hamatus is not established in the ornamental-fish trade and is not routinely available to hobbyists. Specimens encountered would most likely originate from scientific collection or from bycatch in regional fish shipments from southern Brazil. If kept, it should be treated as a typical small subtropical Astyanax: a peaceful, active schooling fish that does best in groups of six or more in a moderately planted aquarium with open swimming space and good water movement.

Water parameters appropriate to the rio Uruguay drainage — temperatures in the range of 64–79 °F to accommodate the subtropical thermal cycle, neutral to slightly acidic to neutral pH, and soft to moderately hard water — would replicate natural conditions. The fish is not a specialist feeder and poses no unusual care challenges beyond the need for a school and adequate space. Its subtropical origins mean it tolerates, and may benefit from, a seasonal temperature reduction in winter, which can promote conditioning for breeding.

Conservation

Psalidodon hamatus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status. It is a relatively recently described species from a restricted set of collection localities in the rio Uruguay system, and comprehensive population surveys have not been published.

The rio Uruguay basin faces ongoing pressures from agricultural land clearance, riparian deforestation, pesticide runoff, and hydroelectric impoundment. Many small characids in the region are locally common and resilient to moderate habitat disturbance, but narrow-range endemics can be sensitive to the cumulative effects of catchment modification. Without a dedicated population assessment, the conservation situation for P. hamatus remains unknown. It does not appear on any regional priority list for freshwater fish conservation in the sources reviewed for this article.
