Psalidodon rutilus is a small, silver-bodied characid of subtropical South America, native to the Paraná–Uruguay river basin spanning Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. An inhabitant of floodplain streams and slow-flowing lowland waters, it is one of the numerous modest tetras that underpin the ecological fabric of the Pampean ichthyofauna. Though seldom spotlighted in the hobby, it epitomises the hardiness and adaptability that has made the genus Astyanax one of the most species-rich and geographically widespread in the New World.

Taxonomy & naming

Psalidodon rutilus was originally described by Leonard Jenyns in 1842, based on material from South America; the parenthetical authority in the current binomial reflects the subsequent transfer of the species within the genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) is the governing authority for the valid name. The genus Astyanax is one of the largest in the family Characidae, encompassing hundreds of species across the Neotropics, and has been the subject of ongoing revisionary work that has resulted in several taxonomic realignments.

A noteworthy recent development is the proposal — by some authors — to resurrect or reassign part of the species-rich Astyanax complex to the genus Psalidodon. FishBase notes that P. rutilus has sometimes been placed under Psalidodon in this rearrangement, though the species continues to be listed under Astyanax in major catalogues. The subspecies P. rutilus nicaraguensis, described by Eigenmann & Ogle in 1907 from Nicaragua, extends the species' or group's range into Central America; the holotype is deposited in the USNM (catalogue no. 55653). Taxonomic boundaries in this corner of Characidae remain fluid, and future molecular studies are likely to clarify species limits further.

Morphology

Psalidodon rutilus is a small, laterally compressed characid with the typical tetra body plan: a deep-ish, oval profile, a forked tail, and the adipose fin characteristic of the family. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 2.8 in, though ecological surveys from subtropical-temperate river systems in the region have recorded individuals approaching 4.7 in SL, suggesting that maximum size may vary with habitat productivity and measurement methodology.

Colouration follows the genus pattern: the body is silvery, often with a metallic lateral stripe or diffuse midlateral band running from behind the opercle toward the caudal peduncle, and a dark blotch on the caudal peduncle base. The fins are largely clear to faintly yellowish. There is no striking sexual colour dimorphism, though females tend to be deeper-bodied when gravid, as is typical for the genus.

Habitat

The species inhabits the Paraná–Uruguay river basin across subtropical South America, with confirmed records from Argentina (including the Buenos Aires province and Pampean streams), Paraguay, and Uruguay. It occupies lowland freshwaters: floodplain streams, slow-moving rivers, oxbow lakes, and the kind of seasonally inundated channels typical of the Pampean plain. Ecological surveys from the Pampean region associate it with waters subject to considerable variation in temperature, dissolved oxygen, and flow across the year.

The Pampean streams that form a large part of this species' range are temperate to subtropical, experiencing marked seasonal swings. Summer water temperatures can reach into the high 20s Celsius, while winter conditions in the southern Buenos Aires region drop considerably. The fish's tolerance of this thermal range — and of the turbid, sometimes nutrient-rich conditions of agricultural floodplains — reflects a broadly eurythermal, generalist ecology. It is found in association with aquatic macrophytes and submerged vegetation where present, as well as in more open, littoral zones.

Feeding

Like most Astyanax, P. rutilus is an opportunistic omnivore. The genus is characterised by broad dietary flexibility, taking small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, terrestrial insects that fall to the water surface, plant matter, algae, and organic detritus in varying proportions depending on local availability. This ecological versatility is a key factor in the genus's success across widely different habitats.

In aquarium care it is undemanding at the feeding station and accepts high-quality flake foods, small pellets, and frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. A varied diet improves condition and colour. As an active, shoaling species it competes well at feeding and rarely struggles to take food in a community setting.

Mating

Psalidodon rutilus is an egg-scattering, open spawner with no parental care, following the reproductive strategy that is ancestral for most characids. Males typically develop fine breeding tubercles on the pectoral fins during the spawning season and pursue females actively. Courtship consists of the male closely following and nudging the female through vegetation or open water, with spawning occurring in brief bursts.

Eggs are released into the water column or scattered loosely among fine-leaved aquatic plants; they are adhesive to a degree and may cling to plant surfaces momentarily before settling. No pair bond is formed and spawning often involves multiple fish in a loose group rather than strict pair behaviour. Seasonal cues — rising temperature, day length, and possibly rainfall or water level changes — trigger breeding readiness in the wild.

Breeding

In captivity, Psalidodon rutilus can be bred by the standard open-spawning tetra method. A conditioned pair or small group is transferred to a separate spawning tank furnished with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or synthetic spawning mops. A slightly raised temperature into the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius, along with soft, slightly acidic water, often encourages spawning, although the species' wide natural range suggests it may accept a broader range of conditions than more delicate Amazonian tetras.

The scattered, adhesive eggs are small and transparent; they hatch within 24–48 hours at spawning temperatures. Adults will readily eat their own eggs, so removing the parents promptly after spawning is essential. The fry are tiny and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods initially, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow. No parental care is offered at any stage.

In the aquarium

Psalidodon rutilus is a hardy, active shoaling fish well suited to community aquaria. As with all shoaling characids it is best kept in groups of six or more individuals, which reduces inter-specimen stress and encourages natural schooling behaviour. A tank of 23.6–31.5 in or more provides adequate swimming space for a small group. The species is compatible with similarly sized, peaceful tankmates and poses no threat to plants, though it will nip at very fine-leafed growth if underfed.

Its tolerance of cooler temperatures — reflecting origins in the temperate-to-subtropical Pampean zone — makes it a reasonable choice for unheated or mildly heated aquaria in temperate regions, though care should be taken not to expose it to extremes. Good filtration and regular water changes are standard requirements. Décor of fine-leaved plants, open swimming lanes, and some surface cover mirrors the marginal-vegetation habitat of its native floodplain streams. The species is not commonly available in the specialist trade but is occasionally encountered among shipments of South American characterid tetras.

Conservation

Psalidodon rutilus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). The absence of an assessment does not imply that the species is secure — many widespread but taxonomically complex small freshwater fishes in the Paraná–Uruguay system have not yet been evaluated — but neither are there published data indicating acute population declines specific to this species.

The Paraná–Uruguay basin is one of the most heavily modified river systems in South America, with widespread impoundment, agricultural runoff, deforestation of riparian zones, and urbanisation affecting water quality and habitat connectivity throughout. Generalist species such as Astyanax are generally more resilient to these pressures than narrow endemics, and several Astyanax species are actually among the most abundant and persistent fishes in degraded Pampean streams. Continued monitoring of the region's ichthyofauna is nevertheless important, and any future revision of the Astyanax / Psalidodon complex may have implications for how constituent species, including P. rutilus, are assessed.
