Campylomormyrus christyi is a weakly electric mormyrid from the Congo basin, a river fish that reads its dark, sediment-laden world through electricity rather than eyesight. It belongs to the Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — among the oldest surviving branches of the bony fishes, a scattered lineage found on four continents and united by a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against the roof of the mouth rather than by any shared modern habitat. Within that ancient order, Campylomormyrus is one of several "curved-snout" mormyrid genera whose elongated, downturned nose is used to probe river-bottom sediment for hidden invertebrates, guided by an electric organ in the tail that produces a species-specific pulse discharge for both electrolocation and communication. Reaching close to 38 cm, C. christyi is a substantial mormyrid, and — like nearly all of its relatives — a fish whose biology in the wild is still only partly understood.

Taxonomy & naming

Campylomormyrus christyi was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1920. It belongs to the family Mormyridae, the elephantfishes of Africa's rivers, within the order Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, a deep-time radiation of fishes on four continents (South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia) named for that shared toothed lingual bone rather than for any common habitat. The Mormyridae are an exclusively African family of weakly electric fishes, entirely convergent with — not related to — the electric knifefishes of South America (Gymnotiformes); the two lineages evolved similar electric senses independently on opposite sides of the Atlantic, and the featherback knifefishes of Africa and Asia (family Notopteridae, also within Osteoglossiformes) add a further layer of superficial, unrelated resemblance that is easy to mix up with either group.

The genus name Campylomormyrus is conventionally read as Greek kampylos, "curved" or "bent", combined with Mormyrus, the family's type genus — together alluding to the down-curved, elongated snout that distinguishes this genus from straighter-snouted mormyrid relatives. The species epithet christyi is a patronym honouring Dr Cuthbert Christy (1863–1932), a British physician, naturalist and colonial medical officer whose collecting work in the Congo region contributed specimens to early twentieth-century ichthyology. Within the genus, C. christyi is separated from the similar C. compressirostris by scale count — 12 rows of circumpeduncular scales around the caudal peduncle versus 16 in C. compressirostris — a small but reliable technical character in a genus where several species look very alike to the eye.

Morphology

Campylomormyrus christyi reaches a reported maximum of about 14.8 in total length, making it one of the larger members of its genus and a substantial fish by mormyrid standards generally. Like other Campylomormyrus it carries the genus's signature feature: an elongated, tubular snout that curves gently downward from the head, an adaptation for probing soft substrate rather than a feeding organ analogous to the fleshy chin barbel (the Schnauzenorgan) of the unrelated elephantnose genus Gnathonemus. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, the mouth small and set well back on the underside of the snout, and the dorsal and anal fins are set far back toward a deeply forked tail.

The technical character used to separate C. christyi from its close look-alike C. compressirostris is scalation around the caudal peduncle: 12 circumpeduncular scale rows in C. christyi against 16 in the other species. As in all mormyrids, an electric organ near the base of the tail generates a weak, pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD) used for electrolocation and communication in dark or turbid water, and the family is known for an outsized cerebellum and one of the highest brain-to-body ratios of any fish — the physiological cost of running a highly sensitive electrosensory system that substitutes for vision in murky habitat.

Habitat

Campylomormyrus christyi is known from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the lower Congo River, Pool Malebo (the wide lake-like stretch of the river near Kinshasa), and the Kasai and Lukenie rivers, two major tributaries draining the central Congo basin. It is a freshwater, demersal fish of river-bottom habitat within this system rather than a fish of open, shallow floodplain.

The wider Congo basin is characterised by warm, tropical conditions and, in many of its channels and tributaries, dark, tannin-stained or turbid water carrying heavy loads of sediment and dissolved organic matter — precisely the kind of low-visibility environment in which a weakly electric fish's sense outperforms eyesight. Species-specific water-chemistry figures for C. christyi are not documented in the sources consulted here; treat the Congo basin's generally warm, soft-to-moderate, slightly acidic-to-neutral river water as representative rather than as a measured value for this exact population.

Feeding

Campylomormyrus christyi is presumed, on the strength of general Mormyridae biology, to be a benthic invertivore: a fish that probes soft river-bottom sediment with its elongated, curved snout for insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, using active electrolocation to detect prey hidden from sight in dark or turbid water. Specific dietary studies of this species were not found in the sources consulted here, so this account follows documented family-wide foraging behaviour rather than species-specific data.

In the aquarium, mormyrids generally do best on a diet of live or frozen invertebrate foods — bloodworm, blackworm, brine shrimp and similar soft-bodied items — offered over a soft substrate that allows natural probing behaviour; sharp gravel risks injuring a foraging snout. As nocturnal foragers by family habit, mormyrids typically feed most confidently after lights-out.

Mating

Wild reproductive behaviour in Campylomormyrus christyi has not been documented in the sources consulted here, and courtship biology across the genus and family more broadly remains poorly studied. In mormyrids generally, the electric organ discharge is thought to carry much of the burden of courtship and species or mate recognition that visual display carries in sighted fishes — each species' EOD waveform is distinctive enough to function as a kind of electric "signature" — but the specific signal characteristics involved in this species' courtship have not been described.

As in other African river mormyrids, spawning in the wild is presumed to be seasonal and tied to the rainy-season rise in water level that opens up spawning and nursery habitat across the Congo basin, though this has not been confirmed specifically for C. christyi. A mormyrid's weak electrical signalling is also easily disrupted by the electrical and acoustic noise of a home aquarium — filters, heaters, pumps and glass-tank reflections all interfere with a faint EOD — which is one reason natural courtship essentially never plays out in captivity for this family.

Breeding

Campylomormyrus christyi is essentially not bred in the aquarium hobby, and like most mormyrids its reproductive biology is poorly known even in the scientific literature. What can be said follows the wider pattern for the family: wild spawning is thought to be seasonal and flood-triggered, the electric organ discharge likely plays a courtship or species-recognition role, and some mormyrids are believed to guard eggs laid among plants or root tangles — but none of this has been confirmed in detail for C. christyi specifically, and captive breeding of this species has essentially not been achieved or reported.

Aquarists should not expect to breed this fish. Specimens reaching the trade are wild-caught, imported from the Congo basin, and the species is best approached as one to keep and observe rather than as a project fish to pair for eggs.

In the aquarium

Campylomormyrus christyi is a large mormyrid — approaching 15 in total length at maximum size — and needs a spacious, mature aquarium sized well beyond what a typical elephantnose keeper might expect for the family. As with other Congo-basin mormyrids it wants dim lighting, ample cover (driftwood, root tangles and broken sightlines rather than open water), a soft substrate suited to a probing snout, and stable, clean water; mormyrids as a group are notably sensitive to poor water quality and to many medications, so dosing calls for caution and conservative treatment.

Electrical equipment matters here in a way it does not for most fish: heaters, powerheads and other gear generate electrical noise that can interfere with a mormyrid's EOD-based navigation and feeding, so keeping such equipment away from the fish's foraging areas is worthwhile. Mormyrids are also frequently intolerant of their own kind and of other electric fish sharing a tank, sparring over space and over their individual electric "signature" — a single specimen, or a genuinely large tank offering plenty of separated territory, is the safer approach rather than assuming a group will settle peacefully. Calm, non-aggressive tankmates that will not out-compete a nocturnal forager for food after dark are the better community match, where a community is attempted at all.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Campylomormyrus christyi as Least Concern. It is known from a defined stretch of the DRC's Congo basin system — the lower Congo River, Pool Malebo, and the Kasai and Lukenie tributaries — and is not currently considered at risk at the species level.

As with many Congo-basin fishes, the main long-term pressures are basin-wide rather than species-specific: sedimentation, water-quality degradation from human activity, and the cumulative effects of development pressure on one of the world's great river systems. There is no evidence in the sources consulted here of a documented population decline driving reassessment, and detailed population-trend data for this species specifically is sparse — the reassuring Least Concern status reflects a wide-enough known range within the Congo system rather than close monitoring of numbers.
