Taxonomy & naming
Campylomormyrus mirus was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1898. It belongs to the family Mormyridae within the order Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, a scattered, deep-time radiation found across South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia today, unified less by looks than by that toothed tongue bone and an ancient split from other teleosts. Mormyridae itself is an entirely African family, and Campylomormyrus mirus is one of roughly two dozen species in its genus, all restricted to African river systems.
The genus name Campylomormyrus combines the Greek kampylos, "bent" or "curved", with a reference to Mormyrus, the genus that gives the family Mormyridae its name — together, "curved mormyrid", for the gently downturned snout that separates this genus from straighter-snouted relatives. The species epithet mirus is Latin for "wonderful" or "strange". Mormyrids as a group are notoriously difficult to tell apart on external looks alone; many species, including several Campylomormyrus, are confidently distinguished only by the waveform of their species-specific electric organ discharge (EOD), so museum-level identification of a given fish sometimes outruns what a photograph can show.
Morphology
Campylomormyrus mirus has the general mormyrid body plan: an elongated, laterally compressed body, a small, low-set mouth, and — as the genus name signals — a snout that curves gently downward rather than projecting into the long, mobile trunk seen in the more famous elephantnose Gnathonemus petersii. FishBase records a maximum total length of about 18.5 in, making it one of the larger Campylomormyrus, though aquarium specimens and most wild individuals are typically smaller.
As in other mormyrids, a weakly electric organ sits in the caudal peduncle near the tail, generating a continuous, low-voltage pulse discharge that the fish reads with electroreceptors spread over its skin. Eyesight is comparatively poor and the fish relies heavily on this electric sense, along with a well-developed lateral line, to navigate and forage in low-visibility water. Mormyrids are also famous for an outsized cerebellum relative to body size, among the largest brain-to-body ratios of any fish group, which is thought to support the processing load of constant electrolocation.
Habitat
This species is a Congo River endemic, known from the middle course of the main Congo channel and several of its tributaries in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, including the Uélé, the Aruwimi and the Lindi-Tshopo, as well as the turbulent Wagenia Falls stretch near Kisangani. It is a demersal, bottom-associated fish of tropical freshwater rivers rather than still lake water.
The Congo basin's forest rivers are typically warm, soft and often stained dark by dissolved tannins and suspended sediment — exactly the low-visibility conditions in which an electric sense pays off. Species-specific data on this fish's preferred temperature and chemistry are sparse, but it fits the broader pattern for the genus and family: warm, soft, mildly acidic to near-neutral water over sand and leaf-litter substrate, with limited direct sunlight reaching the riverbed.
Feeding
Campylomormyrus mirus is a carnivorous, nocturnal forager. It hunts along the riverbed for small invertebrates — insect larvae and other soft-bodied prey buried in sand or silt — locating them by electrolocation rather than sight, a technique it shares with its close relatives in the genus.
Direct feeding data for this species is not available, but closely related Campylomormyrus and other mormyrids kept in aquaria are notoriously finicky: they generally refuse dry foods and need to be won over with live or frozen offerings such as bloodworm and brine shrimp, fed after the lights go down to match their nocturnal habits. A fine sand substrate that lets the fish probe and dig is treated as essential care for the genus, mirroring how it would forage in the wild.
Mating
Courtship in mormyrids is thought to run largely through the electric sense: the pulse-type electric organ discharge is species-specific and individually variable, and it is believed to play a role in species recognition and courtship signalling alongside whatever visual and chemical cues these fish use. Beyond that broad picture, almost nothing specific has been documented for Campylomormyrus mirus.
Wild mormyrids are generally understood to be seasonal spawners, with reproduction linked to the rainy-season rise and fall of river levels rather than spawning year-round. The details of pair formation, courtship display and spawning site selection for this species are simply not known, and that gap is typical for the genus rather than unusual.
Breeding
Campylomormyrus mirus has essentially never been bred in captivity, and its wild reproductive biology is poorly understood — a situation that applies to mormyrids as a family, not just this species. What little is known comes from scattered field observations across the family: spawning appears to be tied to seasonal flooding, and some mormyrids are thought to scatter or deposit eggs among submerged vegetation, with limited or no ongoing parental care once eggs are laid.
Aquarium hobbyists who keep mormyrids do not have an established captive-breeding protocol to follow for this genus, and virtually all specimens in the trade are wild-collected. Anyone hoping to breed this fish should expect very little published guidance to work from.
In the aquarium
This is a specialist's fish. It wants warm, soft, mildly acidic-to-neutral water in the range typical for the genus — roughly 73–82 °F and a pH in the 5.0–7.0 range judging from closely related Campylomormyrus kept in the hobby — over a fine sand substrate it can probe with its electric sense, and dim lighting that matches the shaded rivers it comes from. Water quality needs to be kept clean and stable, since mormyrids are widely reported to be sensitive to poor conditions and slow to recover from stress.
Feeding is the first real hurdle: newly imported fish are often reluctant on anything but live or frozen foods, and getting an individual established and eating reliably can take patience. The second hurdle is temperament — mormyrids, including Campylomormyrus, are frequently intolerant of their own kind and are usually best kept singly or in a carefully managed group with plenty of visual cover to break sightlines, since aggression toward conspecifics is a recurring problem in this genus. A further practical note for medicating any mormyrid: their skin and electroreceptor-covered surface make them more sensitive than many fish to copper-based treatments, so dosing should be conservative.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Campylomormyrus mirus as Least Concern, an assessment made in 2009. As a fish restricted to the middle Congo River and a handful of its tributaries, it is a narrow-range endemic by global standards, but nothing in the available assessment points to an active population decline or an immediate threat.
The long-term outlook for the species is tied to the health of the Congo basin itself — a river system facing pressure from artisanal and commercial fishing, sedimentation, and localized habitat disturbance, even where no acute threat has yet been documented for this particular fish. As with much of the Congo's fish fauna, population trends for Campylomormyrus mirus are not closely monitored, so "Least Concern" should be read as an absence of evidence of decline rather than active confirmation that all is well.
