Marcusenius multisquamatus is a weakly electric mormyrid endemic to the Kunene River, the wild frontier waterway that forms much of the border between Angola and Namibia — a member of one of the oldest surviving lineages of bony fish, the Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against the roof of the mouth. Like every mormyrid it carries an electric organ in its tail that fires a species-specific, pulse-type discharge, used to electrolocate prey and read a dark, sediment-laden river through a private sense that has nothing to do with eyesight. It was only separated from its close look-alike relatives in 2013, on the strength of that electric signal and its genetics rather than any single obvious external feature, and it remains a genuinely obscure fish: known from a fairly narrow stretch of one river, essentially undocumented in captive breeding, and with no established presence in the aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Marcusenius multisquamatus was described in 2013 by Bernd Kramer and Michael Wink in the Journal of Natural History, as part of a broader study resolving east–west genetic and electrical differentiation within the wide-ranging Marcusenius macrolepidotus species complex across southern Africa — the same kind of evidence-based split that had earlier separated its relative M. altisambesi from the same complex in 2007. The description names M. altisambesi and M. macrolepidotus itself as its closest relatives. It belongs to the family Mormyridae, within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues: a scattered, deep-time radiation of fishes found on four continents — South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia — united not by any shared modern habitat but by that toothed lingual bone, and numbered among the most ancient lineages of living teleosts. The Mormyridae are an exclusively African family, every member weakly electric, and entirely convergent with — not related to — the electric knifefishes of South America (order Gymnotiformes), which evolved an equivalent electric sense independently on the opposite side of the Atlantic.

The genus Marcusenius was erected by the American ichthyologist Theodore Gill in 1862 and is traditionally said to honour the naturalist J. H. Marcusen. The species epithet multisquamatus is built from Latin multus, "many", and squamatus, "scaled" — "many-scaled" — a scale-count character used to distinguish it from its sister species within the macrolepidotus complex, whose own name (macrolepidotus, "large-scaled") points at the same kind of fine scale-based character the 2013 study used to tell these close relatives apart. As in much of this genus, species boundaries here rest on characters a casual observer would never notice: scale counts, genetics and the electric organ discharge, not colour or obvious body shape.

Morphology

Marcusenius multisquamatus shows the general mormyrid build: a laterally compressed body, a small, close-set mouth, and a caudal peduncle housing the tail-mounted electric organ that defines the family. FishBase records a maximum size of about 8 in standard length (total length would run somewhat longer), a modest figure typical of the mid-sized end of the genus.

A distinguishing feature noted by FishBase is a prominent, mobile mental lobe on the lower jaw — the fleshy chin projection that gives the wider elephantnose group its name, though in Marcusenius it is a modest lobe rather than the long, trunk-like schnauzenorgan seen in the true elephantnose Gnathonemus petersii. As in closely related species within the macrolepidotus complex, confident identification often depends on fine scale counts, genetics or electric organ discharge rather than on colour or outward shape alone. Also as in other mormyrids, an outsized cerebellum drives one of the highest brain-to-body ratios recorded in any vertebrate, the physiological cost of running a sensitive electrolocation and communication system built around that tail organ.

Habitat

Marcusenius multisquamatus is endemic to the Kunene River, recorded from below Ruacana Falls downstream to the river mouth on the Atlantic coast, roughly between 17–18°S and 13–14°E — a stretch of river that forms much of the border between southwestern Angola and northern Namibia. It is a freshwater, bottom-associated (benthopelagic) fish rather than a wide-ranging African species, and FishBase describes its setting simply as a subtropical savannah river.

That subtropical-savannah descriptor sets it apart from the fully tropical rainforest rivers many mormyrids inhabit further north in the Congo basin: the Kunene runs through the arid and semi-arid landscape of southwestern Angola and northern Namibia rather than equatorial forest. Species-specific temperature and pH figures for this fish were not available in the sources consulted here, and this article does not invent precise numbers beyond that; the general expectation, following the family, is a dim, sediment-laden river setting well suited to a fish that navigates by electric sense rather than eyesight.

Feeding

No species-specific dietary study is available for Marcusenius multisquamatus, but the genus-level pattern reported for Marcusenius by hobby sources is feeding on aquatic insects, insect larvae and snails taken from the riverbed — consistent with the nocturnal, electrolocation-guided foraging typical of mormyrids generally, which sweep soft substrate for small invertebrates in place of the vision that dim, turbid water makes unreliable.

Aquarium-specific feeding data for this exact species is sparse, since it has no established presence in the trade. Related small-to-mid-sized Marcusenius typically take frozen and sinking prepared foods once settled, best offered after dark when the fish is naturally active; that pattern is noted here as a reasonable expectation rather than a confirmed fact for this species.

Mating

FishBase records that breeding data for Marcusenius multisquamatus is not documented, and no dedicated study of its courtship or spawning behaviour was found. As in other mormyrids, the electric organ discharge is thought to carry information relevant to species identity, sex and readiness to spawn, and hobby sources describe the genus generally as using its electric organ discharge for both navigation and species recognition — but the specifics of how that plays out in courtship have not been observed and documented for this species.

Wild mormyrid spawning is generally presumed to be seasonal and cued by rains and rising water, though this has not been confirmed for M. multisquamatus specifically, and the Kunene's subtropical savannah setting means its flow regime may differ from the classic tropical floodplain rivers where that pattern is best documented. The electrical and acoustic noise of a home aquarium — filters, heaters, pumps, reflective glass — readily interferes with the weak EOD signal mormyrids rely on for this kind of communication, one reason natural courtship essentially never plays out under aquarium conditions for fish in this family.

Breeding

Marcusenius multisquamatus is not known to have been bred in the aquarium hobby, and hobby sources describing the wider genus Marcusenius report that captive breeding is rarely if ever achieved, with wild spawning presumed to be seasonal and flood-triggered and the underlying details poorly known even at the genus level. Nothing more specific has been documented for this species.

Aquarists should not expect or attempt to breed this fish. Mormyrids in the trade are typically wild-caught, and any claim of captive spawning in this genus should be treated with real scepticism absent solid documentation.

In the aquarium

Marcusenius multisquamatus has essentially no established presence in the aquarium trade — it is a narrow-range Kunene River endemic, not a commonly imported species like the true elephantnose Gnathonemus petersii. Hobby guidance available is at the genus level rather than species-specific: sources covering Marcusenius generally recommend a minimum aquarium length around 39.4 in and advise against keeping a lone specimen, alongside dim lighting, soft substrate and ample cover such as roots and wood for a fish that is most active after dark.

As with other mormyrids, keepers should stay cautious about tankmates and water quality generally: this genus can be intolerant of its own kind in a confined space even where a group is recommended, so adequate space and hiding places matter. Being scaleless-skinned, electrosensitive fish, mormyrids as a family are notably sensitive to poor water quality and to many aquarium medications, copper-based treatments in particular, so water quality should be kept excellent and stable and any dosing approached with care. This is not a fish for a brightly lit, noisy community tank, and given how little is documented about it specifically, anyone attempting to keep it should treat established Marcusenius and Mormyridae husbandry as a starting point rather than a guarantee.

Conservation

FishBase records the status of Marcusenius multisquamatus as Not Evaluated (NE); no species-specific IUCN Red List assessment was located in the sources consulted here. As a name only formally recognised in 2013, split out of the wider macrolepidotus complex, it is plausible that a dedicated assessment simply has not yet caught up with the taxonomy.

It is known only from the Kunene River between Ruacana Falls and the coast, a narrower range than many African mormyrids, which in principle leaves it more exposed to any single environmental change on that one river than a wide-ranging species would be — but no specific threat to this species is documented in the sources consulted here, and this article does not speculate beyond that.
