Marcusenius stanleyanus is a Congo basin mormyrid — one of Africa's weakly electric "elephantnose" fishes and a member of the bonytongues (Osteoglossiformes), among the oldest surviving branches of the bony fishes, named for a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against a toothed patch on the roof. Described by Boulenger in 1897 from Stanley (now Boyoma) Falls on the upper Congo River, it is a modestly sized, demersal river fish that reads its dark, sediment-laden world through a weak electric field rather than through eyesight — a lineage found only in Africa and entirely convergent with, not related to, the electric knifefishes of South America.

Taxonomy & naming

Marcusenius stanleyanus was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1897, from the type locality of Stanley Falls (now Boyoma Falls) on the upper Congo River near Kisangani. It is placed in the genus Marcusenius, family Mormyridae, order Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, one of the very oldest surviving lineages of teleost fishes, named for a toothed bone at the base of the tongue that bites against a toothed patch on the roof of the mouth, an arrangement found nowhere else among living bony fishes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Marcusenius stanleyanus as a valid name with Boulenger, 1897 as the describing authority.

Osteoglossiformes is a genuinely scattered, deep-time radiation rather than a single recent group: living members are split across South America (arapaima, arowanas), Africa (the mormyrids and the featherback knifefishes of the Notopteridae, and the African butterflyfish), Southeast Asia (the Asian arowana) and Australasia (the saratogas). Within Africa, the family Mormyridae is itself large and notoriously difficult to sort by eye, with well over 200 described species; many, including M. stanleyanus, are most reliably distinguished from close relatives by their electric organ discharge rather than by external anatomy alone. The species epithet stanleyanus honours the explorer Henry Morton Stanley, for whom the type-locality falls were named at the time of description; the genus name Marcusenius is conventionally understood to honour the 19th-century naturalist Marcusen, who studied African and Egyptian fishes.

Morphology

Like other mormyrids, Marcusenius stanleyanus has a laterally compressed body, a small mouth, and dorsal and anal fins set well back toward a slender caudal peduncle. FishBase records a maximum length of 8.3 in total length — a mid-sized mormyrid, smaller than the large elephantnoses of genus Mormyrus and larger than the dwarf Pollimyrus species. It is a demersal fish, living and foraging close to the river bottom rather than in open water.

The defining trait of the family sits in the tail: mormyrids carry an electric organ in the caudal peduncle, built from modified muscle cells, that generates a weak, species-specific pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD). The fish reads the distortions this field creates around nearby objects and other fish through electroreceptor organs scattered across the skin, giving it electrolocation in the dark, turbid water mormyrids favour, and a channel for signalling other mormyrids. Behind this system sits a disproportionately large cerebellum — among the highest brain-to-body ratios of any fish — which has made the family a classic model for studying how a nervous system processes electrosensory information; mormyrids are sometimes nicknamed "thinking fish" for it. Beyond FishBase's size and range record, detailed species-level anatomical description of M. stanleyanus is sparse in the sources available for this article.

Habitat

Marcusenius stanleyanus is a Congo basin fish, recorded from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic and Angola, with further occurrence records from the Malagarasi River system, a tributary that ultimately drains into Lake Tanganyika. Its type locality is Stanley (now Boyoma) Falls on the upper Congo River, one of the most powerful rapids systems on the continent.

No species-specific water-chemistry data — temperature or pH — were found in the sources reviewed for this article. The Congo basin as a whole runs warm, and is typically soft and slightly acidic to neutral, often stained by dissolved organic matter from surrounding forest and floodplain into the dim, low-visibility water in which a mormyrid's electric sense earns its keep rather than acting as a redundant backup to eyesight. Any specific numbers offered for this species should be read as inferred from the wider basin, not as measured values.

Feeding

Detailed diet studies specific to Marcusenius stanleyanus were not found in the sources reviewed. Mormyrids as a family are benthic invertivores, using electrolocation to detect insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms and other invertebrates hidden in sediment or cover, foraging mostly after dark or in low light — a strategy that fits this species' demersal habits and Congo basin range, though it has not been documented for M. stanleyanus itself.

Aquarium mormyrids of similar size and habits generally do best on sinking foods offered after lights-out — frozen or live bloodworm, chopped prawn, blackworms and sinking pellets — since they are poorly equipped to out-compete fast, sighted fish for food in bright light. In the absence of species-specific feeding data, this general mormyrid husbandry approach is the safest guide for M. stanleyanus in captivity.

Mating

Breeding biology in Marcusenius stanleyanus specifically is poorly known; none of the sources reviewed for this article report a study of its reproduction. What is understood comes from the wider family: wild mormyrids are thought to be seasonal spawners, with breeding activity linked to the rains and the flood pulse of their rivers, when rising, food-rich floodplain water opens fresh spawning and nursery habitat.

The electric organ discharge is believed to play a courtship and species-recognition role in mormyrids generally — EOD waveform differs between species and can shift with reproductive condition in some — but the specific courtship sequence, pairing behaviour and spawning-site preferences of M. stanleyanus have not been documented. This is typical of the family: mormyrid reproduction in the wild remains one of the more poorly studied corners of African freshwater fish biology.

Breeding

Marcusenius stanleyanus is essentially not bred in the home aquarium. Like the great majority of mormyrids, it is rarely if ever spawned in captivity, and no reliable aquarium breeding account for this species was found in the sources reviewed.

What little can be inferred from related mormyrids suggests egg-scattering or egg-depositing among vegetation or cover with no sustained parental care, but this has not been confirmed for M. stanleyanus itself, and keepers should not expect to breed it. Anyone who does observe spawning behaviour in this species would be documenting something genuinely undescribed in the aquarium literature.

In the aquarium

Marcusenius stanleyanus is an uncommonly traded mormyrid, and care information specific to it is limited, so the sound approach is to apply general elephantnose/mormyrid husbandry. Provide a soft, fine substrate that is kind to the skin, dim lighting, and plenty of cover — driftwood, root tangles, smooth rock and pipe retreats — since these are shy, largely nocturnal fish that navigate and forage by electrolocation rather than eyesight and are easily stressed by bright, bare tanks.

Mormyrids are notoriously sensitive to poor water quality and to many medications, particularly anything containing copper, which can damage the electroreceptor organs studding the skin; treat this species conservatively and keep a close eye on water quality. Many mormyrids are also intolerant of their own kind and will spar over territory, so a single specimen, or a genuinely large group to spread out aggression, is generally the safer approach rather than a pair or small trio — though species-specific social behaviour has not been documented for M. stanleyanus and keepers should watch their own fish rather than assume a fixed rule. At a reported maximum of 8.3 in total length it needs real swimming room, but it is not in the size-trap category of the giant arowanas or arapaima.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Marcusenius stanleyanus as Least Concern, an assessment reflected in FishBase's summary of the species (dated 1 May 2009). It is known from a reasonably wide swath of the Congo basin across four countries, with an additional link into the Lake Tanganyika system via the Malagarasi River, and it is not currently considered at risk.

As with much of the Congo basin's ichthyofauna, the main long-term pressures are basin-wide rather than specific to this species: deforestation and land-use change affecting water quality and flow, hydropower and dam development, and the general under-study of Congo basin fishes, which makes population trends hard to track with confidence. It is not a species currently flagged for conservation concern, but it is also not one that has been closely monitored.
