Marcusenius deboensis is a little-known, weakly electric mormyrid recorded only from two water bodies on the middle Niger River in West Africa — Lake Debo, part of Mali's Inner Niger Delta, and Kainji Lake in Nigeria. Like every member of the family Mormyridae, it belongs to one of the oldest surviving lineages of bony fish, the Osteoglossiformes or bonytongues, and carries an electric organ in its tail that fires a species-specific, pulse-type discharge used to electrolocate prey and communicate in dark, sediment-laden floodwater. A modestly sized mormyrid reaching about 25 cm total length, it is essentially unknown outside the ichthyological literature — never established in the aquarium trade — and the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient, a plain admission that too little has been published about it to judge its status with confidence.

Taxonomy & naming

Marcusenius deboensis was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Daget in 1954 as Gnathonemus deboensis, in the journal Mémoires de l'Institut français d'Afrique Noire (no. 36), from a type locality on Lake Debo in the upper/middle Niger River, western Africa; the holotype is held at IFAN (Institut Fondamental d'Afrique Noire, Dakar). It was later transferred into the genus Marcusenius, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) lists Marcusenius deboensis (Daget, 1954) as the currently valid name — the parenthetical authority is the standard signal that the species was originally described in a different genus. It belongs to the family Mormyridae, within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues: among the oldest surviving lineages of living teleost fish, named for a toothed bone on the tongue (the basihyal) that bites against a toothed patch on the roof of the mouth. Bonytongues are a scattered, deep-time radiation found today on four continents — South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia — united by that dental feature rather than by any shared modern habitat; the Mormyridae themselves are an exclusively African family, every member weakly electric, and entirely convergent with — not related to — the electric knifefishes of South America (order Gymnotiformes), which evolved an equivalent electric sense independently on the far side of the Atlantic.

The genus name Marcusenius was erected by the American ichthyologist Theodore Gill in 1862 and is traditionally said to commemorate a naturalist named Marcusen, an early student of mormyrid brain anatomy; the full biographical record behind the dedication is not clearly documented in the sources consulted here. The species epithet deboensis is a Latinised place name built with the suffix "-ensis" ("belonging to, from"), directly naming the type locality of Lake Debo. As in many mormyrids, generic placement within this family has shifted repeatedly as revisions worked through species originally lumped under Gnathonemus, and species-level identification often rests more on the fish's electric organ discharge than on visible anatomy.

Morphology

Published description of Marcusenius deboensis is thin beyond the original 1954 account and a brief FishBase record, so this article does not go further than what is documented. FishBase gives a maximum size of about 9.8 in total length, a modest, mid-range figure for the genus — larger than the smallest "baby whale" mormyrids sold occasionally in the trade, but well short of the larger Marcusenius and other mormyrid genera that approach or exceed 15.7–19.7 in.

Like other mormyrids, it can be expected to share the family's general build: a laterally compressed body, a small, close-set mouth suited to picking invertebrates from soft substrate, and a slender caudal peduncle housing the tail-mounted electric organ that defines the family and drives its electrolocation and communication. Detailed colouration, fin-ray counts and other diagnostic detail specific to this species were not available in the sources consulted here — data sparse — and, as with most mormyrids, confident field identification typically depends on the electric organ discharge rather than external appearance alone.

Habitat

Marcusenius deboensis is known only from two localities on the middle Niger River system in West Africa: Lake Debo, a shallow, seasonally flooded lake within Mali's Inner Niger Delta, fed by the annual flood pulse of the Niger and Bani rivers; and Kainji Lake, a large man-made reservoir on the Niger River in Nigeria, impounded behind the Kainji Dam. The wide geographic gap between the two records most likely reflects how sparsely this genus has been surveyed across West Africa's rivers rather than proof of two truly disjunct populations, but no intervening records are documented in the sources consulted here.

Aquarists should not expect to breed this fish. It has essentially no track record in captivity at all, and any claim of routine captive spawning in this genus should be treated with real scepticism absent solid documentation.

In the aquarium

Marcusenius deboensis has no established presence in the aquarium trade — it is known almost entirely from scientific survey and taxonomic records rather than from hobbyist keeping, and this article makes no claim otherwise. Prospective keepers are very unlikely to encounter it offered for sale, and any "assorted African mormyrid" import claiming this identification should be treated cautiously given how much species-level confusion exists across the genus.

What can be said follows from the general care needs of mormyrids as a family, not from any species-specific record: dim lighting, soft substrate, and ample cover from roots, wood or dense planting to help a naturally shy, electrosensitive fish feel secure; warm, stable, soft-to-moderate water; and real caution with medications, since mormyrids are notably sensitive to poor water quality and to copper-based treatments in particular. At a modest maximum size of about 9.8 in total length it would not need an enormous tank by mormyrid standards, but none of this has been tested on this exact species, and its Data Deficient status is a reminder of how little published data exists to guide husbandry.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Marcusenius deboensis as Data Deficient, an assessment recorded as of 2019 and carried forward into the 2022 Red List update; it is not listed under CITES. Data Deficient means the available information on its distribution, population and threats is judged insufficient for a full assessment — an honest gap, not evidence that the species is safe.

Both of its only known localities are subject to real human pressure: Mali's Inner Niger Delta, home to Lake Debo, faces upstream damming and irrigation diversion that alter its defining flood pulse, while Kainji Lake in Nigeria is itself an artificial reservoir managed for hydropower and subject to fishing pressure and sedimentation. Given the species is recorded from only these two water bodies, changes to either one are the most plausible long-term concern, even though the current record is too sparse to support a formal threat category.
