Mormyrops boulengeri is a little-known member of one of the oldest surviving branches of the bony fishes, the bonytongues (order Osteoglossiformes), and of the Mormyridae, the weakly electric elephantfishes of Africa. It is a demersal, Congo-basin endemic that reads its dark, tannin-stained rivers with a species-specific pulse of electricity rather than with sight, growing to a modest 25 cm total length and drawing occasional attention from specialist hobbyists rather than the general trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Mormyrops boulengeri was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1900. It belongs to the family Mormyridae, one of the African families within Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongue fishes, among the most ancient surviving lineages of teleosts, named for a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against a matching pad on the roof. The genus Mormyrops itself holds roughly twenty species spread across tropical Africa's river systems, several of them, like this one, poorly documented outside the ichthyological literature.

The genus name Mormyrops combines the Greek mormyros, an old name for a marine sea bream, with -ops, "appearance" or "face" — an allusion whose exact logic is lost to the nineteenth-century naming convention rather than any real resemblance to a sea bream. The species epithet boulengeri honours George Albert Boulenger, the Belgian-British ichthyologist at London's Natural History Museum whose prolific descriptions of African freshwater fishes shaped the taxonomy of the continent's fish fauna in this period; naming a new species after him was a common courtesy among contemporaries such as Pellegrin. This account follows FishBase's current treatment of the species as Mormyrops boulengeri, though some recent sources place it instead in the genus Oxymormyrus — genus-level placement in this corner of mormyrid taxonomy is not fully settled, and readers may see both names in circulation.

Morphology

Like other mormyrids, Mormyrops boulengeri has a laterally compressed, elongate body and a tail carrying a specialised electric organ that emits a weak, species-specific pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD). Unlike the trunk-snouted "elephantnoses" of genera such as Gnathonemus and Campylomormyrus, species of Mormyrops carry a fairly ordinary, blunt-snouted head without an elongated chin appendage — visual identification within the genus is difficult, and many mormyrids are reliably told apart only by the waveform of their EOD rather than by eye.

Reported maximum size is around 9.8 in total length (FishBase). As in mormyrids generally, an outsized cerebellum supports the constant processing of electrosensory information, giving the family a reputation as unusually "brain-heavy" fish for their size, though this has not been measured specifically in M. boulengeri. The eyes are small and vision plays a secondary role to the electric sense in a fish built to navigate and forage in dark or turbid water.

Habitat

Mormyrops boulengeri is a Congo River basin endemic, recorded from the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the Alima drainage, Pool Malebo (Stanley Pool), Lake Tumba, the Ruki drainage and the Itimbiri River. It is demersal, living and foraging near the bottom of these rivers, floodplain lakes and their tributaries rather than in open water.

FishBase records a temperature range of roughly 73–79 °F for the species, consistent with the warm, stable conditions of equatorial Congo basin waters. Like much of the family, it is associated with dim, sediment- and tannin-stained water — the low-visibility habitat in which a weak electric sense, rather than eyesight, does the work of finding food and avoiding obstacles. Specific pH data for this species were not found in the sources consulted; the wider family is generally associated with soft, slightly acidic to neutral Congo basin water.

Feeding

Mormyrids as a group are benthic invertebrate feeders, and M. boulengeri almost certainly follows the same pattern: probing soft substrate and cover for insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, located by electrolocation as much as by sight or smell. Foraging activity in the family is concentrated after dark, when the fish are least visible to predators and their electrosensory system has the least competing stimulation.

Hobbyist reports describe the species taking live, meaty foods readily in the aquarium. As with other mormyrids, feeding is best offered after the lights go down, and a fish that seems reluctant to feed in a brightly lit tank in daytime is behaving normally rather than being unhealthy.

Mating

Wild reproduction in Mormyrops boulengeri has not been closely studied. Mormyrids in general are thought to be seasonal spawners cued to the flood pulse of their river systems, when rising water opens up new floodplain habitat and food. The electric organ discharge is believed to play a courtship and species-recognition role in the family — allowing a fish to identify a same-species mate by EOD waveform in water too dark or turbid for visual cues — but the specifics of courtship in this species are not documented in the sources available.

In some mormyrid species, eggs are thought to be laid among submerged vegetation and guarded for a period after spawning, but this has not been confirmed for M. boulengeri specifically, and the account here should be read as extrapolation from the wider family rather than direct observation of this species.

Breeding

Mormyrops boulengeri is essentially unbred in the aquarium hobby, and its breeding biology is poorly known even in the wild — a pattern typical of the family. Successful captive spawning of mormyrids of any kind is rare, and there is no established protocol for triggering or rearing a spawn of this species in an aquarium.

What little is inferred comes from the family's general biology: seasonal, flood-triggered spawning in the wild, with the EOD implicated in mate recognition, but no reliable account of nest-building, egg number, incubation time or fry rearing for this species. Anyone attempting to breed it should expect to be working from first principles rather than a known method.

In the aquarium

Mormyrops boulengeri turns up only occasionally in the specialist trade rather than as a mainstream offering. It wants a dim, shaded aquarium with plenty of cover — caves, driftwood tangles and dense planting at the margins — reflecting both its nocturnal habits and its preference for low-light, low-visibility conditions in the wild; a tank lit for a planted-community aesthetic is the wrong environment for it. Water in the range of roughly 73–79 °F, soft and on the acidic-to-neutral side, mirrors the Congo basin water it comes from, though exact parameters have not been closely documented for this species.

As with mormyrids generally, it should be fed meaty foods (frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped invertebrates) mainly after dark, and water quality should be kept scrupulously clean — the family is notably sensitive to accumulated nitrogenous waste and to many common aquarium medications, so any treatment should be dosed cautiously and researched first. Mormyrids can also be territorial or outright aggressive toward their own kind in a confined tank; a single specimen, or a group large enough and a tank spacious enough to diffuse aggression, is the safer approach rather than a pair or small group in cramped quarters. A tight-fitting lid is standard practice for the family.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Mormyrops boulengeri as Least Concern. FishBase additionally reports a low fisheries vulnerability score for the species (around 15 out of 100), consistent with a widespread, low-pressure status within its Congo basin range rather than a narrowly threatened one.

As a Congo basin endemic, its long-term outlook is tied to the health of that river system — sedimentation, deforestation-driven habitat change and localised overfishing are the generic pressures facing Congo basin fishes, though none has been documented as an active threat to this particular species. The most meaningful conservation contribution from the aquarium side is straightforward: buy only responsibly sourced specimens and avoid adding to collection pressure on a fish that is not currently considered at risk.
