Taxonomy & naming
Mormyrops zanclirostris was described by the British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1867. It belongs to the family Mormyridae, the elephantnoses and mormyrids, within the order Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, an ancient branch of the teleost (bony fish) family tree that also includes the arowanas, arapaima, African butterflyfish and featherback knifefishes on other continents. The species sits in the subgenus Oxymormyrus within the large genus Mormyrops, and older literature also lists it under the names Oxymormyrus zanclirostris, Mormyrus zanclirostris and Mormyrus (Oxymormyrus) zanclirostris.
The species epithet zanclirostris joins a Greek root glossed as 'pointed' with the Latin rostrum, 'snout' or 'beak' — together read as 'sharp-snouted,' a plain description of the fish's narrow, downward-curved profile. The genus name Mormyrops itself derives from Mormyrus, an older elephantnose genus, combined with a Greek suffix meaning 'resembling,' so the genus name reads as 'Mormyrus-like.' The vernacular name Pool elephantfish, used in some older sources, refers to the same downcurved snout, likened to a small elephant's trunk.
Morphology
Like other members of Mormyrops, M. zanclirostris has an elongated, laterally compressed body and a small mouth set well back beneath a pointed, extended snout — the feature that gives the species its name. A single dorsal fin sits far back on the body roughly opposite the anal fin, and the caudal fin is forked, both typical of the genus. Reported maximum size is around 10.6 in total length, a mid-sized fish within a genus that includes some considerably larger mormyrids.
As in all mormyrids, an electric organ near the base of the tail generates a weak electric field, and electroreceptor cells distributed over the skin let the fish sense distortions in that field caused by nearby objects, prey or other fish — the electrolocation system that lets mormyrids navigate and forage in murky, low-visibility water. Detailed descriptions of this species' live coloration, fin proportions and sexual characters have not been published beyond the original taxonomic literature, so specifics beyond its general Mormyrops build and sharp snout remain sparsely documented.
Habitat
Mormyrops zanclirostris is native to Central Africa. It is recorded from the Congo River basin in the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and also occurs in several independent coastal drainages in Gabon, including the Ntem, Ogooué (Ogowe), Nyanga and Kouilou-Niari rivers and the Ivindo, a major Ogooué tributary. It is a demersal fish, associated with the bottom of these river systems rather than open water.
Species-specific water-chemistry data for M. zanclirostris has not been published. Based on the general biology of Central African mormyrids in the same river systems, it likely inhabits warm, soft water that runs acidic to near-neutral and is often stained tea-brown by tannins leaching from surrounding rainforest leaf litter — the low-visibility conditions that favor a fish navigating by electric sense rather than sight. These figures should be read as typical of the genus and region, not as confirmed measurements for this species.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Mormyrops zanclirostris has been published. Based on the broader biology of Mormyrops and other mormyrids, it most likely forages along the bottom for aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — locating prey in dark, sediment-laden water using its electric sense rather than vision. Most mormyrids are more active after dark, when they leave cover to feed.
Because the species is rarely kept, there is little first-hand aquarium feeding data either. Keepers of related mormyrids typically offer sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, black mosquito larvae and other meaty foods, generally after the lights go out, and this is a reasonable starting point pending direct observation of M. zanclirostris itself.
Mating
In the wild, Mormyrops zanclirostris is presumed — by analogy with other Central African mormyrids — to be a seasonal spawner tied to the rains, when rising rivers flood marginal vegetation and create the conditions many floodplain fish use to breed. As in other mormyrids, the individually distinctive electric-organ discharge each fish produces is thought to play a role in courtship and species recognition, letting fish identify potential mates of the correct species in water too dark or turbid for visual cues to work well.
No courtship behavior specific to M. zanclirostris has been documented in the literature. This is typical of the family: mormyrid mating behavior is difficult to observe in the field and has been worked out in detail for only a small number of well-studied species.
Breeding
Mormyrops zanclirostris is essentially unbred in the aquarium hobby, and its reproductive biology is poorly known even in the wild. Like many mormyrids it is presumed to be a seasonal, flood-triggered spawner, and some mormyrids are thought to scatter or deposit eggs among submerged roots and vegetation with limited parental involvement, but this has not been confirmed for M. zanclirostris specifically, and details as basic as clutch size, incubation time and fry development remain undescribed.
Given how little is documented, prospective breeders should treat any captive spawning as effectively unprecedented rather than a matter of following an established protocol. The honest state of knowledge is that breeding is rarely if ever achieved in captivity, and the species' full reproductive cycle awaits direct field or aquarium study.
In the aquarium
Mormyrops zanclirostris is a seldom-seen fish in the trade, occasionally turning up among mixed African wild-caught imports rather than being deliberately bred or farmed. Like other mormyrids it should be kept in soft, dim, tannin-stained water over a fine sand substrate, with driftwood, roots or other cover it can retreat to during the day, since most mormyrids are shy and more active after dark. A secure, tight-fitting lid matters, as many African freshwater fish — mormyrids included — are capable of jumping.
Mormyrids as a group are notably sensitive to poor water quality and to many medications, and are best kept in a mature, stable, well-filtered tank rather than a newly cycled one. At a maximum recorded size of around 10.6 in, an adult M. zanclirostris needs a reasonably large, quiet tank away from boisterous tankmates. Many mormyrids are also aggressive toward their own species outside of large groups, so a lone specimen or a carefully managed group, rather than a casual pair, is the safer approach given how little is specifically known about this species' social behavior.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Mormyrops zanclirostris as Least Concern, an assessment made in 2022. This reflects its relatively wide distribution across the Congo basin and several independent river systems in Gabon, rather than a detailed study of population trends, which have not been reported.
No specific threats to the species have been documented in the assessment. As with many Central African freshwater fish, the long-term outlook is tied to broader pressures on these river systems — deforestation and land-use change in their catchments, sedimentation, and any future expansion of fishing or dam development — rather than to any threat identified for this species in particular.
