Taxonomy & naming
Mormyrops intermedius was described by the Italian ichthyologist Decio Vinciguerra in 1928. It belongs to family Mormyridae within order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — a deep-time radiation of teleost fishes found today on four continents (South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia) and named for the toothed bony structure on the tongue that opposes a toothed plate on the roof of the mouth. Mormyridae itself is an exclusively African, freshwater family of weakly electric fish, and the genus Mormyrops is one of its largest, spread across river systems from West Africa to the Nile and the Zambezi.
The genus name Mormyrops combines Mormyrus, the name of a related mormyrid genus, with the Greek suffix -ops, "face" or "appearance" — so Mormyrops means, roughly, "Mormyrus-like". The species epithet intermedius is Latin for "in between, intermediate", a common descriptive term in taxonomy for a species whose characters sit between those of others in the genus; the precise reasoning behind Vinciguerra's choice is not established here. Many mormyrids are difficult to separate on external appearance alone and are confidently distinguished chiefly by their electric-organ discharge, so identification of field specimens can be uncertain without that data.
Morphology
Mormyrops intermedius is a modestly sized mormyrid, reaching a recorded maximum of about 7.2 in total length, well under the size of the largest Mormyrops species, some of which grow past a metre. Like other members of the genus it has the characteristic mormyrid build: an elongated, laterally compressed body, a single long-based dorsal fin set well back over an equally long anal fin, and a small, forked tail carrying the species-specific electric organ at its base.
As in all mormyrids, the electric organ generates a weak, pulse-type discharge used for electrolocation — sensing objects, obstacles and prey in dark or turbid water without relying on sight — and for communication between individuals. Mormyridae as a family is noted for having some of the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, with an enlarged cerebellum that processes the constant stream of electrosensory information; this is a family-wide trait rather than something specifically measured in M. intermedius, for which no dedicated morphological study is available beyond the original description and FishBase's summary data.
Habitat
The species is known from the Itimbiri River, a tributary in the middle Congo River basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which is also its type locality. FishBase lists it as a freshwater, demersal (bottom-associated), tropical fish, and the IUCN assessment notes its geographic range as restricted to that type locality — meaning it may be a genuine narrow-range endemic, or simply an under-surveyed species that has not been looked for elsewhere in the Congo basin.
Specific water-chemistry data for the Itimbiri River reach where the species occurs has not been documented in the sources available here. Congo basin rivers generally run warm and are frequently soft, slightly acidic to neutral, and stained with tannins from surrounding forest and floodplain vegetation — the kind of dim, low-visibility water in which the mormyrid electric sense is thought to have evolved — but this general basin character should not be read as measured data for this specific species.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Mormyrops intermedius a trophic level of about 3.2, consistent with a predatory diet. As a demersal mormyrid it most likely forages over the riverbed, using its electric sense to locate aquatic invertebrates and small prey items in low-visibility water, in the manner documented for better-studied Mormyrops species.
No dedicated dietary study or aquarium feeding record exists for this species; it is not established in the aquarium trade, so there is no husbandry-derived feeding data to draw on. Any statement about specific prey items or feeding behaviour beyond the general predatory, bottom-foraging pattern typical of the genus would be speculation.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behaviour in Mormyrops intermedius has not been documented. Across Mormyridae generally, the electric-organ discharge plays a role in courtship and species recognition — individuals appear to use differences in discharge waveform and timing to identify potential mates and rivals of their own species among a crowded field of similar-looking relatives — but the fine detail of this process is poorly understood even in the handful of mormyrids that have been studied closely, and nothing specific has been published for this species.
Wild mormyrids are generally believed to be seasonal spawners whose reproduction is tied to the rains and to flood-plain inundation, which opens up newly flooded vegetation as spawning and nursery habitat. Whether M. intermedius follows this pattern has not been confirmed by direct observation.
Breeding
Mormyrops intermedius has not been bred in captivity, and breeding biology across the family Mormyridae is poorly known generally — mormyrids are essentially absent from the list of fish reliably spawned by aquarists. What is inferred for the family comes mostly from field observation of related species: seasonal, flood-triggered spawning, and some evidence that certain mormyrids guard eggs among submerged vegetation, though this has not been confirmed for M. intermedius specifically.
Given that the species is rare or absent from the aquarium trade and has a restricted known range, there is no basis here for describing a specific breeding protocol, egg count, incubation period or fry-rearing method. Any account claiming otherwise for this species would be fabricated.

What is known of the genus offers only general, cautionary context. Larger congeneric Mormyrops species are predatory, can be aggressive, carry strong teeth, and — at their larger adult sizes — require very large tanks (upwards of 59.1 in) to keep responsibly; M. intermedius, at a documented maximum of 7.2 in, is far smaller than those species, but nothing published here confirms its temperament or specific space needs. As with mormyrids generally, any aquarist attempting to keep a fish of this genus should expect a scaleless-adjacent sensitivity to harsh medication and copper-based treatments, a preference for soft, dim, tannin-toned water, and the social complexity that comes with a strongly electrocommunicative fish — but these are family-level generalities, not documented facts about this particular species, and should be treated as such.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Mormyrops intermedius as Data Deficient on 16 February 2009. The assessment notes that the species' known geographic range is restricted to its Itimbiri River type locality in the Democratic Republic of the Congo — a status that reflects a lack of survey data as much as any confirmed rarity; Data Deficient species are, by definition, ones for which not enough is known to judge extinction risk either way.
No population trend, habitat-loss assessment or targeted conservation action has been published for this species. Its long-term status will depend on whether future surveys of the Congo basin's mormyrid fauna extend its known range beyond the single documented locality, and on the general pressures facing Congo basin rivers — including sedimentation, deforestation and localised fishing — none of which have been specifically quantified for M. intermedius.
