Mormyrops nigricans is a little-known member of the Mormyridae, the weakly electric elephantfishes of Africa, and of Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — one of the oldest surviving branches of the bony fishes. It is a Central African river endemic that reads its dark, tannin-stained water with a species-specific pulse of electricity rather than with sight, growing to a modest 34 cm total length and drawing little attention from the aquarium trade compared with the family's better-known elephantnoses.

Taxonomy & naming

Mormyrops nigricans was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1899, from a specimen collected at Kutu on Lake Leopold II (now Lac Mai-Ndombe) in the upper Congo basin. It belongs to the family Mormyridae, one of the African families within Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongue fishes, among the most ancient surviving lineages of teleosts and named for a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against a matching pad on the roof. GBIF and FishBase treat Mormyrops nigricans as a currently valid species and confirm Boulenger's authorship.

The genus name Mormyrops combines the Greek mormyros, an old name for a marine sea bream, with -ops, "appearance" or "face" — a nineteenth-century naming choice whose logic does not depend on any real resemblance to a sea bream. The species epithet nigricans is Latin for "blackish" or "growing black", the present participle of nigricare, and presumably refers to a dark overall coloration; the sources consulted here do not give a detailed colour description, so this should be read as an inference from the name rather than a confirmed pattern.

Morphology

Species of Mormyrops share an elongate, sometimes near-eel-like (anguilliform) body, a terminal mouth set with strong teeth, and a tail carrying a specialised electric organ that emits a weak, species-specific pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD). Mormyrops nigricans reaches a reported maximum of about 13.4 in total length, a modest size for the family and markedly smaller than its best-known congener, the giant Mormyrops anguilloides, which can exceed a metre.

As in mormyrids generally, an enlarged cerebellum supports constant processing of electrosensory information, giving the family a reputation for an unusually high brain-to-body ratio, though this has not been measured specifically in M. nigricans. Vision plays a secondary role to the electric sense in a fish built to navigate and forage in dark or turbid water, and — as with many mormyrids — confident field identification within the genus often relies on the waveform of the EOD rather than on external appearance alone.

Habitat

Mormyrops nigricans is known from two Central African river systems: the Ogooué basin of Gabon, and the middle Congo River basin across Cameroon, the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the type locality lies. It is a demersal fish of tropical freshwater, living and foraging near the bottom rather than in open water.

Sources describe the habitat as slow-moving, murky, tannin-stained water with dense vegetation, silt and plant debris — a low-transparency environment in which electrolocation, not eyesight, does the work of finding food and avoiding obstacles. Reported water temperature is roughly 73–77 °F in the wild, with aquarium sources recommending a slightly warmer 75–82 °F range, and pH is described as neutral to slightly acidic, in the region of 4.2 to 6.5.

Feeding

Mormyrids as a group are benthic invertebrate feeders, and M. nigricans almost certainly follows the same pattern, probing soft substrate and cover for insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, located by electrolocation as much as by sight or smell. Foraging in the family is concentrated after dark, when the fish are least visible to predators and the electrosensory system faces the least competing stimulation.

Species-specific diet data for M. nigricans were not found in the sources consulted; the account above is extrapolated from the wider family's well-documented feeding ecology rather than direct observation of this species.

Mating

Wild reproduction in Mormyrops nigricans has not been closely studied. Mormyrids in general are seasonal spawners cued to the flood pulse of their river systems, when rising water opens floodplain habitat and food. The electric organ discharge is thought to play a courtship and species-recognition role in the family, letting a fish identify a same-species mate by EOD waveform in water too dark or turbid for visual cues, but the specifics of courtship in M. nigricans are not documented in the sources available.

Breeding

Mormyrops nigricans is essentially unbred in the aquarium hobby, and its breeding biology is poorly known even in the wild — a pattern typical of the family. Wild spawning appears to be seasonal and flood-triggered, and the EOD is implicated in species recognition during courtship, but there is no established account of nest-building, egg number, incubation time or fry-rearing for this species, and no reliable protocol exists for triggering or rearing a captive spawn.

In the aquarium

FishBase notes that Mormyrops nigricans is not commonly kept in aquaria, and it remains obscure even among specialist mormyrid keepers; anyone who does acquire one should expect to be working with little published husbandry to fall back on. A dim, shaded tank with soft, tannin-stained, neutral-to-slightly-acidic water in the 75–82 °F range mirrors its wild habitat, and plenty of cover — caves, driftwood tangles and dense marginal planting — suits both its nocturnal habits and its preference for low-visibility surroundings.

As with mormyrids generally, this species should be fed meaty foods mainly after dark, and water quality should be kept clean, since the family is notably sensitive to many common aquarium medications. Hobbyist sources describe it as capable of aggression, so hiding spots and careful stocking — a single specimen, or a tank spacious enough to diffuse conflict — are the safer approach rather than crowding it with conspecifics or other mormyrids.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Mormyrops nigricans as Least Concern, an assessment dated 16 February 2009. It is known from two separate Central African basins across four countries, consistent with a widespread status rather than a narrowly threatened one.

As with other Congo and Ogooué basin fishes, its long-term outlook is tied to the health of those river systems — sedimentation, deforestation-driven habitat change and localised overfishing are the generic pressures facing the region's freshwater fauna, though none has been documented as an active threat to this particular species.
