Taxonomy & naming
Mormyrops curviceps was described by the ichthyologist Louis Roman in 1966. It sits in the family Mormyridae — the elephantnoses and mormyrids — within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues. Osteoglossiformes is a scattered, deep-time radiation found on four continents (South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia), and it is important not to confuse this fish's family with the superficially similar-looking knifefishes of South America (order Gymnotiformes): the resemblance between African and American "electric" fishes is convergent evolution, not shared ancestry — the two groups are not close relatives.
The genus name Mormyrops comes from the Greek mormyros, an old name for a fish, combined with -ops, "appearance" or "face" — essentially "mormyrid-looking". The species epithet curviceps is Latin, from curvus ("curved") and -ceps (from caput, "head"), describing the curved profile of the head that distinguishes it from straighter-headed relatives in the genus. GBIF's taxonomic backbone treats Mormyrops curviceps Roman, 1966 as a valid, currently accepted species name.
Morphology
Mormyrops is a genus of relatively large-bodied, elongated mormyrids without the extended trunk-like chin barbel (the schnauzenorgan) that makes the smaller elephantnose genus Gnathonemus so recognisable; M. curviceps instead has the more uniform, gently curved head and blunt-snouted profile typical of its genus. FishBase records a maximum size of roughly 16.9 in — a substantial fish by mormyrid standards and considerably larger than the small Gnathonemus and Campylomormyrus species more commonly seen in the trade.
As in all mormyrids, the business end of this fish's biology is invisible at a glance: an electric organ in the caudal peduncle generates a continuous, low-voltage, pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD) that is essentially a signature unique to the species and, in some mormyrids, to the individual. The EOD is read by an array of electroreceptors covering the skin, feeding into a hugely enlarged cerebellum — mormyrids have one of the highest brain-to-body-mass ratios of any fish, a genuine "thinking fish" adaptation built to process a constant stream of electrical information. Because so many mormyrids look alike, confident field identification within the genus often relies on the EOD waveform rather than external appearance alone, and that uncertainty applies to M. curviceps as much as to its relatives.
Habitat
Mormyrops curviceps is known from the upper Black Volta, a major West African river system draining parts of the Sahel and Guinean savanna into the Volta basin. Records are limited, and the species appears to be one of the region's less-documented mormyrids rather than a wide-ranging, commonly collected fish — its full range within the Volta system is not well characterised, so treat the distribution as data-sparse beyond the upper Black Volta itself.
Like other river-dwelling mormyrids, it is a demersal fish of tropical freshwater, almost certainly favouring the soft, slightly acidic to neutral, tannin-stained or turbid water typical of West African floodplain rivers — exactly the dim, low-visibility conditions in which an electric sense pays for itself. Specific temperature and pH readings for this species have not been published; the ranges given here reflect the general conditions of its West African river habitat rather than site-specific measurements.
Feeding
Mormyrids are invertivores, and Mormyrops curviceps is presumed to follow the pattern of its better-studied relatives: foraging over sand and mud for aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans, largely after dark. Electrolocation — reading distortions in its own electric field caused by nearby objects and prey — lets it hunt effectively in murky, low-visibility water where sight is of limited use.
No species-specific feeding study exists for M. curviceps, so this account follows the documented diet of the family: mosquito larvae, bloodworm, Daphnia and Tubifex-type worms are the foods mormyrids are known to take readily, whether in the wild or (rarely) in captivity.
Mating
Courtship and species recognition in mormyrids are thought to run partly through the electric organ discharge: an EOD that is nearly a personal signature lets a fish identify potential mates of its own species — and avoid wasting effort on the wrong one — in water too dark or turbid for visual cues to work reliably. Beyond that general principle, nothing specific to Mormyrops curviceps has been documented; the details of its courtship behaviour are unknown.
Mormyrid reproduction in general is understood to be seasonal and flood-triggered, timed to the rise of river levels that opens up flooded margins and vegetation as spawning and nursery habitat. Whether M. curviceps follows this pattern has not been confirmed by direct observation, but it is the working assumption for the family.
Breeding
Breeding in Mormyrops curviceps is essentially undocumented. Mormyrids as a group are seasonal, flood-triggered spawners in the wild, and some species are thought to scatter or deposit eggs among flooded vegetation with a degree of guarding, but the details for most of the family — including this species — are barely known, and captive breeding of mormyrids is rarely if ever achieved.
No aquarium spawning of M. curviceps has been reported. Anyone hoping to breed this fish should expect to be working essentially from scratch: no established protocol exists, and even sexing a pair with confidence is not straightforward in most mormyrids.

Mormyrops curviceps is not an established aquarium fish — it is seldom, if ever, seen in the trade, and this account draws on the general, well-documented care requirements of the mormyrid family rather than species-specific aquarium experience. At a reported maximum size around 16.9 in, it would need a genuinely large, long tank as an adult, more in line with a serious specialist setup than a typical community aquarium.
Mormyrids as a group are sensitive fish: they want soft water, dim lighting with plenty of shaded cover, a fine sand substrate they can probe, and they do poorly under bright, bare-tank conditions. They are notably intolerant of copper, formalin, dyes and aquarium salt, so routine medications used casually in general fishkeeping can injure or kill them — treat only when necessary and at conservative doses. Feeding live or meaty foods after dark suits their natural rhythm. Mormyrids can also be aggressive toward their own or similar-looking species, likely tied to the same electric signalling used in the wild, so stocking needs care even before size is considered. Given how little is documented about this particular species, anyone attempting to keep it should treat it as an experimental, advanced-hobbyist project rather than a fish with a settled care sheet.
Conservation
Mormyrops curviceps has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so no formal conservation status or threat assessment exists for it. FishBase likewise lists it as Not Evaluated. This is common among the smaller-range, less-studied members of the mormyrid genus, and it means the species' population trend and vulnerability are essentially unknown rather than confirmed as safe.
In the absence of a species-specific assessment, the general pressures on West African river systems — damming, agricultural runoff, sedimentation and habitat degradation across the Volta basin — are the plausible long-term concerns for a narrowly documented river fish like this one, but no data currently ties population changes in M. curviceps specifically to any of them.
