Mormyrops breviceps, the Liberian elephantfish, is a robust, weakly electric mormyrid from the coastal rivers of Upper Guinea in West Africa. Like every member of its order, it belongs to the Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, among the oldest surviving lineages of the teleost fishes, named for a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against a second tooth patch on the roof. Within that ancient radiation it sits in the family Mormyridae, the African elephantfishes, whose tail-mounted electric organ and unusually large, wrinkled cerebellum make them some of the most electrically and neurologically sophisticated fish that swim. A blunt-headed, deep-bodied mormyrid reaching a substantial size for the genus, it electrolocates and communicates in the dim, tannin-stained water of its home rivers, and it is bred essentially never in captivity — a fish best approached as a long-term, poorly understood specialist rather than a routine community species.

Taxonomy & naming

Mormyrops breviceps was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1894. It belongs to the family Mormyridae within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — a deep-time, four-continent radiation (South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, Australasia) whose living members are among the most anatomically archaic teleost fishes still swimming today. Mormyridae itself is an exclusively African family, and it should never be confused with the superficially similar but taxonomically unrelated New World knifefishes of the order Gymnotiformes; the resemblance between African and South American 'knife'-shaped electric fishes is a case of convergent evolution, not shared ancestry.

The genus name Mormyrops combines Mormyrus — the type genus of the family — with the Greek ops, 'face' or 'appearance', so the name reads roughly as 'Mormyrus-like'. The species epithet breviceps is Latin, from brevis ('short') and ceps/caput ('head'), describing the comparatively blunt, short-snouted profile that distinguishes this species from longer-snouted relatives in the genus. Mormyrops is the largest-bodied genus in the family, and several of its species are visually similar to one another, so field and aquarium identification within the genus is not always straightforward without close comparison of proportions and, ideally, the fish's electric-organ discharge.

Morphology

Mormyrops breviceps has the deep, laterally compressed, elongate body typical of the larger mormyrids, a single dorsal fin set well back over the anal fin, and a deeply forked caudal fin on a slender peduncle. True to its epithet, the head is comparatively short and blunt rather than drawn out into the long, tapering snout seen in some other Mormyrops and Mormyrus species. Unlike Gnathonemus petersii and a few related genera, it does not carry an elongated, mobile chin appendage (the 'schnauzenorgan'); that trunk-like feeding organ, densely packed with electroreceptors, is a hallmark of other mormyrid lineages, not this one. Coloration is a plain silvery-grey to brownish, with little in the way of bold pattern — typical camouflage for a fish that relies on electrolocation rather than vision in dark water.

As in all mormyrids, an electric organ sits in the caudal peduncle and generates a weak, species- and often individual-specific pulse-type electric-organ discharge (EOD), used both to electrolocate obstacles and prey in murky, tannin-stained water and to communicate with other mormyrids. Mormyrids as a family are famous for one of the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, driven by a greatly enlarged, foliated cerebellum (the valvula cerebelli) that processes the constant stream of electrosensory information — earning the family a reputation among researchers as 'thinking fish'. FishBase lists a maximum size of around 25.6 in for the species, making it one of the larger mormyrids kept by hobbyists at all, though most aquarium specimens offered in the trade are considerably smaller juveniles.

Habitat

Mormyrops breviceps is a West African freshwater fish of the Upper Guinea coastal drainages, recorded from the Volta system and a cluster of rivers running to the coast of Liberia and neighbouring countries — including the St. Paul and Mano rivers — with the species' documented range spanning Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Liberia and Guinea-Bissau. It is a demersal, bottom-associating fish of tropical rivers rather than still lake water.

These Upper Guinea rivers run soft and slightly acidic, often stained by tannins from surrounding forest, and the species is adapted to exactly the low-visibility conditions in which an electric sense is most useful. As with most mormyrids, precise published water-chemistry data for this species are limited; keepers should default to soft, weakly acidic to neutral, warm tropical-river conditions rather than hard or alkaline water, and treat any more specific number as an approximation rather than a measured constant.

Feeding

In the wild, Mormyrops breviceps and its mormyrid relatives forage over the bottom, mostly after dark, using their electric sense to locate small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and crustaceans — buried in sediment or hidden among cover, rather than hunting by sight. Larger Mormyrops species are also known to take other fish as they grow.

In the aquarium, mormyrids are generally fed live or frozen invertebrate foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, black worms and similar — offered after the lights go down to match their crepuscular and nocturnal foraging habit. They are not natural competitors for flake or pellet food at feeding time in a mixed community and are easily out-competed by faster daytime fish, so target feeding after dark is the practical approach.

Mating

Courtship and species recognition in mormyrids run substantially on the electric-organ discharge: EOD waveform differs between species and can vary between sexes and individuals, and it is thought to play a role in mate assessment and species recognition among the various West and Central African mormyrids that often live alongside one another. Beyond that broad pattern, the courtship behaviour of Mormyrops breviceps specifically has not been well documented.

In the wild, mormyrids as a group are generally understood to be seasonal spawners whose reproduction is linked to the rains and to flood-plain conditions, but the details for this species are sparse in the available literature, and nothing published here should be treated as more than a general family-level pattern rather than a confirmed account of this fish.

Breeding

Mormyrops breviceps is essentially unbred in the home aquarium, and FishBase explicitly notes that breeding has not been achieved in captivity for the species. This is consistent with mormyrids generally: as a family they are notoriously difficult to spawn under aquarium conditions, and detailed accounts of successful captive breeding are rare across the whole family, not just this species.

What little is understood points to seasonal, flood-triggered spawning in the wild, with some mormyrids thought to scatter or deposit eggs among vegetation and offer little or no subsequent parental care, but firm, species-specific data for Mormyrops breviceps are not available. Prospective keepers should treat this as a fish kept for observation and long-term husbandry rather than one bred to a plan.

In the aquarium

Mormyrops breviceps needs a large, mature aquarium: it grows to a genuinely substantial size for a mormyrid (to roughly 25.6 in by FishBase's figure), which puts it well beyond a standard community tank and into large-species territory as it matures. Provide a soft substrate for its bottom-foraging habit, dim lighting that echoes its native tannin-stained rivers, and plenty of cover such as driftwood, roots and broad-leafed planting to give a naturally shy, electrosensitive fish places to retreat.

Water should be kept soft and on the acidic-to-neutral side, warm and stable — sudden swings in chemistry are poorly tolerated. Mormyrids as a group are noted for sensitivity to poor water quality and to many medications, so stable, well-filtered water and conservative dosing (avoiding copper-based treatments in particular) matter more than for many aquarium fish. They can also be intolerant of conspecifics and unrelated mormyrids in close quarters, sometimes sparring over territory, so stocking density and tankmate choice need care; a single well-housed individual, or a carefully monitored group in a genuinely large tank, is the safer approach. It is established in the aquarium trade, so specimens are available, but this is a long-term commitment to a large, specialist fish rather than a casual community addition.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Mormyrops breviceps as Least Concern, most recently in a 2019 assessment. The species is known from a cluster of West African coastal rivers across several countries rather than a single narrow endemic range, and there is no indication of severe, range-wide population decline driving the assessment.

As with many West African river fish, localized pressures — deforestation and sedimentation, water abstraction, damming and pollution in the Upper Guinea forest belt — are the general long-term concerns for the region's freshwater fauna, even where a species' overall Red List status remains favourable. CITES has not evaluated Mormyrops breviceps, and no international trade restriction applies to the species.
