Taxonomy & naming
Mormyrus tapirus was described by the German ichthyologist Ernst Pappenheim in 1905. It belongs to the family Mormyridae — the elephantnoses and mormyrids — within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, one of the oldest surviving lineages of teleost fish. The order takes its name from a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against a toothed patch on the roof, an ancient arrangement shared by a scattered set of relatives across South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia.
The genus Mormyrus is large, with roughly sixty recognised species spread across African rivers and lakes, and many of them look alike at a glance: body shape, fin-ray counts and snout profile shift only slightly from one species to the next, and confident field identification often comes down to each fish's electric organ discharge rather than its outline. FishBase separates Mormyrus tapirus from its close relatives M. rume and M. subundulatus mainly by its longer snout and longer anal fin, and lists 60 to 74 dorsal soft rays and 21 to 29 anal soft rays for the species. The common name Trunkfish, occasionally used for it, refers to the same elongated, tapir-like snout that gives the species its epithet.
Morphology
Like other members of its genus, Mormyrus tapirus has a slim, fusiform body and a long, gently downturned snout with the small mouth set at the tip — the feature responsible for both its scientific name and the vernacular Trunkfish. Colouration is a plain silvery grey to olive-brown, without the bold pattern seen in some other African freshwater fish; camouflage here is less important than the fish's other senses. The caudal peduncle houses a weakly electric organ, standard across the Mormyridae, which produces a pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD) unique to each species.
That electric organ is put to two uses: electrolocation, building a picture of obstacles, prey and open water in dark or turbid water where eyesight is of limited use, and communication, since the pulse pattern varies enough between individuals and species to carry information in courtship and territorial encounters. Mormyrids are also known for having some of the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, with an enlarged cerebellum devoted largely to processing this electrosensory information — a trait sometimes summed up as the "thinking fish". FishBase records a maximum length of about 16.9 in for Mormyrus tapirus, large for a mormyrid species and well beyond the size of the small elephantnoses more commonly seen in the trade.
Habitat
Mormyrus tapirus is native to West Africa, recorded from coastal river basins loosely grouped under the so-called Guinea region and from river systems in Cameroon, roughly between 11°N and 6°N (FishBase). It is a demersal, tropical freshwater fish, living near the bottom of slow-flowing rivers and floodplain habitats rather than in open water.
Detailed water-chemistry data specific to this species have not been published. Like other mormyrids from West African coastal and floodplain basins, it is presumed to live in warm, soft, slightly acidic to neutral water that is often turbid or tannin-stained — exactly the kind of low-visibility environment in which a weak electric sense is more useful than eyesight.
Feeding
Wild mormyrids typically have a small, underslung mouth set for picking food items off or out of the substrate rather than for grabbing prey in open water, and the group as a whole feeds on aquatic insect larvae and snails found among sediment and debris. Species-specific dietary studies for Mormyrus tapirus have not been published, so its diet is inferred from the wider genus rather than confirmed for this fish alone.
Because the species is only rarely available in the aquarium trade, published husbandry accounts of its captive diet are scarce. Aquarists keeping other Mormyrus generally offer sinking foods after dark — frozen bloodworm and blackworm, snails, and prepared carnivore pellets — matching the fish's nocturnal, bottom-feeding habits; the same approach is likely appropriate here, though it is extrapolated rather than documented for this exact species.
Mating
Courtship and spawning in Mormyrus tapirus have not been documented. Across the Mormyridae generally, spawning is understood to be seasonal and tied to the flood cycle of the home river system, with reproductive activity concentrated around the rains rather than occurring year-round.
The species-specific electric organ discharge is thought to play a role in courtship and mate recognition in mormyrids broadly, letting a fish identify a same-species partner in dark or turbid water where visual cues are of little use, but the fine detail of how that signal is used during courtship in this species — or in most Mormyrus — remains poorly studied.
Breeding
Mormyrus tapirus is essentially unbred in the aquarium hobby. Mormyrids as a group are difficult, seasonal spawners whose reproductive biology is still poorly understood, and successful captive breeding is rarely if ever reported for any species in the genus; M. tapirus, additionally scarce in the trade to begin with, has no established breeding account.
What is known comes largely from field observations of other mormyrids: some species are thought to guard their eggs among aquatic vegetation after a flood-triggered spawn, but the details for Mormyrus tapirus specifically are not established. Prospective breeders should expect no reliable protocol to follow and treat any successful spawn as noteworthy rather than routine.
In the aquarium
Mormyrus tapirus is a genuinely rare aquarium fish; hobbyist sources describe it as difficult to obtain, and a dedicated guide to elephantnoses in the trade lists it among the mormyrids aquarists struggle to source at all. At a recorded maximum of around 16.9 in it is also one of the larger species in its genus, and a minimum tank length of about 59.1 in is recommended for an adult — this is not a fish for a modest setup.
As with other mormyrids, it needs quiet, dimly lit water with soft or gentle filtration, plenty of cover to break sightlines, and stable, low-nitrate conditions; mormyrids are notably sensitive to poor water quality and to some medications, so routine maintenance and careful, conservative dosing matter more than with many aquarium fish. Individuals of the same or similar species can be aggressive toward one another, so tankmates and stocking need to be chosen with that in mind rather than assuming a peaceful community fish. Because Mormyrus species are hard to tell apart on looks alone, buyers should treat the species identification on any offered fish with some caution.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Mormyrus tapirus as Least Concern, an assessment last updated in 2019. It is not currently considered at risk of extinction.
As a wide-ranging West African coastal-basin species rather than a narrow single-river endemic, Mormyrus tapirus is not flagged for any specific conservation concern, though like other freshwater fish of the region it would be expected to face the general, background pressures of habitat degradation, damming and water-quality decline that affect West African rivers more broadly. Its scarcity in the aquarium trade means collection for the hobby is not considered a meaningful threat.
