Taxonomy & naming
Mormyrus lacerda was described by the French zoologist Francis de Laporte de Castelnau in 1861. It belongs to the family Mormyridae, the elephantfishes, within the order Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, one of the oldest living branches of the teleost fishes, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against the roof of the mouth. The order is a scattered, deep-time radiation found today on four continents; Mormyridae is its purely African branch, restricted to freshwater rivers and lakes south of the Sahara. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Mormyrus lacerda as a valid species in the genus Mormyrus, the largest genus in the family, with roughly sixty recognized species.
The genus name Mormyrus comes from the ancient Greek mormyros, a name originally given to an unrelated Mediterranean sea bream; Linnaeus borrowed the word in 1758 for the type species of this African genus, and it has carried over to the whole group since. The species epithet lacerda honors Dr. Francisco José Maria de Lacerda (1753-1798), a Portuguese explorer and naturalist who traveled and collected in southern Africa. The common name "western bottlenose mormyrid" refers to the genus's elongated, downturned snout and to the species' range on the western side of southern Africa's river systems; several Mormyrus species look broadly similar and are best told apart by fin-ray counts and by their electric organ discharge rather than by color alone.
Morphology
Like other members of its genus, Mormyrus lacerda has an elongated, laterally compressed body and a small, low-slung mouth set well back from a bluntly rounded, downturned snout — the "bottlenose" profile that gives several Mormyrus species their common name. The dorsal fin is set far back on the body and long, with 62 to 68 soft rays, opposite an anal fin of 18 to 21 soft rays; the caudal fin is deeply forked. Reported maximum size is about 19.7 in total length, making it one of the larger members of its genus, though most individuals seen in the wild and in the trade are considerably smaller.
The most important structure is one most aquarists never see directly: a weak electric organ near the base of the tail, built from modified muscle tissue, that produces a continuous, species-specific pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD). The fish reads the return signal through electroreceptors spread across its skin, building a real-time picture of its surroundings in dark or turbid water where eyesight is of limited use. Supporting that sense is the disproportionately large, deeply folded cerebellum mentioned above; mormyrids as a group have among the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, a feature that has made them a long-standing subject of neuroscience research quite apart from the aquarium hobby. Unlike the elephantnose Gnathonemus petersii, Mormyrus lacks a fleshy, mobile chin appendage (the schnauzenorgan); its electroreceptors are instead distributed more generally over the head and body.
Habitat
Mormyrus lacerda is a southern African river fish, recorded from the Cunene, Cuvelai, Okavango, upper Zambezi and Kafue river systems spanning Angola, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia. Specimen records place it firmly in the Okavango Delta and the upper Zambezi/Kwando system; it has not been recorded from the Congo basin, and it should not be confused with the many superficially similar mormyrids native to that separate drainage.
It is a demersal, bottom-associated fish of slow-flowing river channels and seasonally flooded plains, generally active after dark. The water it lives in is soft and only mildly acidic to neutral, warm year-round, and often stained with tannins and suspended sediment from floodplain vegetation and soil — the dim, low-visibility conditions in which an electric sense is most useful. Water levels in these systems swing sharply between dry and rainy seasons, and the fish's own movements, including its breeding migrations, are tied to that flood cycle rather than to a fixed calendar.
Feeding
In the wild, Mormyrus lacerda forages over sand and mud substrates for aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and snails, probing the bottom and using its electric sense to locate prey buried in sediment or hidden after dark. It is a bottom-oriented feeder rather than a mid-water hunter, consistent with its downturned mouth and demersal habits.
In the aquarium it should be offered a varied diet of live and frozen foods that mimic this natural prey base — bloodworm, mosquito larvae, white worms, Daphnia and Tubifex are all readily taken, along with snails where available. It does not adapt well to dry, flake-only diets, and because it feeds mainly after dark, food is best offered once the tank lights are off or dimmed, so a mormyrid sharing space with more assertive daytime feeders is not simply out-competed.
Mating
Mating behavior in Mormyrus lacerda is tied to the seasonal flood pulse of its river systems: adults are reported to move upstream during periods of spate, or flood, congregating in newly inundated floodplain habitat during the rainy season. As in other mormyrids, the electric organ discharge is thought to function as a courtship and species-recognition signal, letting individuals identify potential mates and rivals of the correct species by the shape of their electrical pulse in water too dark or turbid for visual cues to work well.
Beyond that outline, the details of courtship and pair formation in this species are not well documented. Much of what is known about mormyrid breeding biology in general comes from a handful of well-studied genera rather than from Mormyrus lacerda specifically, so statements about this species are best treated as inference from its relatives rather than as directly observed fact.
Breeding
Breeding in Mormyrus lacerda is a seasonal event tied to the rains: females are reported to carry as many as 7,000 eggs, released as the fish move into newly flooded plains during the wet season. As in most mormyrids, the details of nest site choice, fertilization, and any parental attendance to the eggs in the wild remain poorly known.
The species is essentially never bred in captivity. It is rare in the aquarium trade to begin with, and the flood-triggered spawning migration that appears to drive reproduction in the wild is not something an aquarium can replicate. Prospective keepers should not expect breeding behavior from captive stock; this is a fish kept for observation of its sensory biology, not for its reproduction.
In the aquarium
Mormyrus lacerda is uncommon in the aquarium trade and, at a reported maximum of about 19.7 in, is a large fish that needs a correspondingly large tank — a minimum length of around 59.1 in is a reasonable starting point for a single adult, with more space needed if it is kept with company. It does best over a soft, sandy substrate that lets it probe and forage naturally, and it should be given plenty of hiding places such as driftwood, roots and rockwork for daytime cover.
Lighting should be kept dim: like other mormyrids, this species can become severely stressed, even to the point of death, under bright aquarium lighting, and it strongly prefers subdued, shaded conditions that echo the tannin-stained, turbid water of its home rivers. Water should be soft to moderately hard, roughly neutral in pH, and warm, around 75–82 °F, with clean, stable conditions and minimal turbidity from waste; mormyrids are notably sensitive to poor water quality. It should not be kept as a lone specimen; a group, or at minimum a carefully chosen companion, better reflects its natural social tendencies, though individuals can also be territorial toward their own species and need to be watched for aggression.
One care point applies to every mormyrid: they are scaleless fish, which makes them unusually sensitive to copper, formalin, dyes and salt-based medications that are otherwise routine in fishkeeping. Any treatment should be dosed conservatively, and copper-based medications in particular are best avoided altogether. Given its size, its specialist water and lighting needs, and its poor tolerance of common medications, this is a fish for an experienced keeper with a large, well-established tank rather than a general community aquarium.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Mormyrus lacerda as Least Concern, based on a 2022 assessment that found a stable population trend across its southern African range. It is not currently considered threatened.
Its range spans several river systems — the Cunene, Cuvelai, Okavango, upper Zambezi and Kafue — across Angola, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia, which spreads any localized pressure across a fairly wide area. The Okavango Delta and upper Zambezi in particular remain relatively intact wetland systems by regional standards, though as with most African freshwater fish, water abstraction, damming and land-use change in these catchments are the longer-term risks to watch, even for a species not currently flagged as threatened.
