Taxonomy & naming
The Avanavero cory was described in 1992 by Isaäc Isbrücker and Han Nijssen, the Amsterdam pair responsible for much of the modern taxonomy of the Guianan armoured catfishes. The epithet honours Peter J. H. van Bree (1927–2011), a Dutch zoologist and colleague at the institution, the name being Latinised from 'van Bree'. The common name 'Avanavero' refers to a locality on the Corantijn system in the species' range. For most of its history it has been listed as Corydoras breei, within the huge genus Corydoras Lacépède, 1803 of the family Callichthyidae.
That genus was shown not to be a single natural lineage, and the 2024 revision by Dias, Tencatt and colleagues (DOI 10.1093/zoolinnean/zlae053) split it into several genera, including the resurrected Hoplisoma. Under that classification the species becomes Hoplisoma breei, the combination now used by FishBase and the specialist Corydoras World site. Because the change is recent and the aquarium trade still says 'Corydoras breei,' we keep that heading while recording the current lineage name. C. breei is one of a group of similar short-bodied Surinamese corys and is best identified together with its collection locality.
Morphology
This is a small cory, reaching about 1.5 in in standard length — a compact, deep-bodied fish with the blunt, rounded snout of the short-nosed corydoradines. Like all members of the group it is armoured rather than scaled, with two overlapping rows of bony plates down each flank and the hard, helmeted bony head that gives Corydoras its name; three pairs of barbels fringe the small, downturned mouth it uses to taste and sift the substrate.
The colouration is the understated patterning typical of the Guianan corys — a pale to brownish ground with darker markings rather than bold contrast. As in the rest of the group the sexes differ mainly in build: females grow larger and rounder, most obvious viewed from above, while males remain slimmer. The dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins each bear a stiff leading spine, the standard corydoradine armament.
Habitat
Corydoras breei is recorded from the Corantijn (Courantyne) River basin of Suriname, on the Guiana Shield — a comparatively narrow range confined to a single drainage system. These are warm tropical lowland waters, and the fish lives over soft bottoms in the quieter reaches where corydoradines typically forage.
The water is warm and broadly circumneutral: FishBase gives roughly 72–79 °F, a pH band of about 6.0 to 8.0 and soft to moderately hard water (around 2–25 °dH). Like its relatives it is a facultative air-breather, periodically surfacing to gulp air and absorb oxygen through a vascularised hindgut — an adaptation suited to the warm, oxygen-poor margins and seasonal pools of the lowland forest streams it inhabits.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study exists for this species, but its structure and habits are unambiguous: like the rest of the group it is a benthic omnivore and detritivore. It works the bottom with its barbels, sifting sand and leaf litter for small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans and the organic detritus film, taking in mouthfuls of substrate and venting the cleaned grains through the gill openings. Its trophic level (around 3.0) reflects that mixed invertebrate-and-detritus diet. In captivity it would take the usual cory foods — sinking pellets and tablets, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp, and small live foods delivered to the bottom.
Mating
Spawning has not been documented specifically for C. breei, but the Corydoradinae share a strikingly uniform reproductive pattern, so the general account very probably applies. These are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond. A ready female cleans a spawning site, and a courting male takes up the classic 'T-position', his body at right angles to her head; she appears to take milt directly, and a few adhesive eggs are clasped in a pelvic-fin basket and pressed onto the cleaned surface. The sequence repeats, a few eggs at a time, until the clutch is complete.
Breeding
There is no established captive-breeding record for this uncommon species, so any account is by analogy with better-known relatives rather than direct observation, which we note plainly. In the corydoradines generally, spawning is often triggered by a cool, large water change mimicking the onset of the rains; the adhesive eggs are laid in small batches onto plants, wood or glass and receive no parental care, the adults eating them unless eggs or parents are separated. Eggs usually hatch in three to five days, and the fry take microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods once the yolk is absorbed. Whether C. breei conforms to this template in every detail awaits confirmation by aquarists who keep it.
In the aquarium
The Avanavero cory is a peaceful, small, shoaling catfish that appears only rarely in the trade. Standard corydoradine husbandry applies. Keep it in a group of six or more — these are social fish, stressed when kept singly or in pairs — over soft sand or very smooth fine gravel, because they feed by sifting and sharp or coarse substrate erodes and infects their barbels, leaving them blunted and prone to infection.
Given its small adult size, a modest, planted tank with a clean bottom, gentle flow and good oxygenation suits it; aim for warm but not hot water (about 72–79 °F) and the soft, near-neutral chemistry of its home drainage, though it tolerates a fair range. It is entirely peaceful and belongs with small, calm community fish rather than anything boisterous. The familiar cautions hold: the fin spines tangle easily in nets, so a cup is safer, and a badly stressed cory can release a skin toxin that may kill the group in the confined volume of a bag or bucket, so move them with care.
Conservation
The IUCN assessed Corydoras breei as Least Concern in 2021. Its known range is restricted, confined to the Corantijn basin of Suriname, but the assessment found no evidence of major threats and no significant collection pressure, since it is not a heavily traded aquarium fish. The general risks to Guiana Shield freshwaters — deforestation, mining, agriculture and pollution degrading lowland streams — apply here as everywhere, and a narrow-range species is more exposed to local habitat damage than the widespread corys of the hobby. As a species, however, it is not currently considered to be at risk.
