Aquascape & setup

Warm, soft to moderately soft water on the gentle side of neutral, in keeping with its lowland-river home. Keep it clean and steady — corys are sensitive to accumulated nitrate and to sudden swings.

Soft, fine sand is non-negotiable: corys feed by sifting substrate through their gills, and sharp or coarse gravel wears their barbels down to stubs. Driftwood, roots, leaf litter and some shade complete a river-margin look, with plenty of open sandy floor to work over.

Community & care

Corydoras are shoaling fish — keep six or more of the same species; a lone or paired cory is a stressed one. They are utterly peaceful bottom-dwellers and belong only with calm, similarly-sized community fish — small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids and the like — never with anything large or boisterous enough to bully a slow-moving fish working the floor.

Corydoras guianensis is a small, pale armoured catfish of the coastal rivers of Suriname and French Guiana — the 'light cory,' named for its washed-out colouration. A schooling, sand-sifting bottom-dweller of clear forest creeks, it was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Han Nijssen in 1970 and reassigned to the resurrected genus Hoplisoma in the 2024 Dias & Tencatt revision of the Corydoradinae. Hardy and unfussy where it occurs, it is listed by the IUCN as Least Concern.

Taxonomy & naming

The light cory was described in 1970 by Han Nijssen, the Dutch specialist whose work underpins much of what is known about the corys of the Guianas. The specific name guianensis simply means 'of Guiana,' for the region it inhabits; the type material came from a creek in the Nickerie River drainage of Suriname. Nijssen placed it, as was then universal, in the great genus Corydoras Lacépède, 1803, the dominant genus of armoured catfishes (family Callichthyidae).

The 2024 phylogeny-based revision of the Corydoradinae by Dias, Tencatt and colleagues (Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, zlae053) split that overgrown genus into several lineages, and the light cory is now carried by FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes as Hoplisoma guianense (the neuter ending following the neuter genus name). The change is recent; the hobby still says 'Corydoras guianensis,' which we keep as the heading while noting the current combination in the Hoplisoma lineage.

Morphology

This is a small, short-snouted cory reaching about 1.5 in in standard length, built on the standard plan of the subfamily: two overlapping rows of bony scutes armour each flank, the blunt head is a hard helmet, and three pairs of barbels fringe the downturned mouth for tasting and sifting the substrate.

Its colouration is pale and understated, the source of the common name 'light cory' — a light, often pinkish or yellowish-grey ground with restrained, diffuse markings rather than the bold blotches and bars of the showier corys. As in all members of the genus, the dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins each carry a stiff spine, mildly venomous and capable of a sharp jab or of snagging in a net. The bony plates incorporate a 'locking' mechanism that lets the fish hold those three spines rigidly erect, an effective passive defence that makes a small swallowed cory an awkward, prickly mouthful for a predator. Sexual dimorphism is the usual cory pattern: females grow somewhat larger and rounder, especially when gravid, while males are slimmer.

Habitat

Corydoras guianensis occurs in the coastal river systems of Suriname and French Guiana in northeastern South America. It is a fish of creeks with sandy bottoms, recorded in both slow and surprisingly strong currents, where it keeps mostly to backwaters and shelters under logs and rocks. It lives in schools of several dozen individuals — a sociable, busy little catfish of the forest creek margins.

FishBase gives an environmental envelope of roughly 72–79 °F, a pH from acidic to slightly alkaline (about 6.0–8.0) and soft to moderately hard water (dH around 2–25), consistent with the clear, often soft and lightly mineralised waters of the Guiana Shield drainages. Like its relatives it is a facultative air-breather, periodically rising to gulp atmospheric air and absorb oxygen through a vascularised hindgut, an adaptation that lets it cope with warm, oxygen-poor stretches. The species is reported to be relatively long-lived for so small a fish, with a lifespan that can reach about seven years.

Feeding

The light cory is a benthic omnivore and detritivore that works the sandy bottom of its home creeks continuously. Burying its snout and barbels in the substrate, it tastes out small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, worms and the organic film of detritus, expelling cleaned sand through the gill openings. It is an opportunist rather than a specialist. In the aquarium it readily accepts sinking pellets and wafers, frozen and live foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp, and small foods that settle to the bottom, though it should always have access to proper sinking food rather than being left to scavenge scraps.

Mating

Like all Corydoras, the light cory is an egg-laying shoaler with no pair bond and the genus's distinctive courtship. A ready female cleans a spawning site and the school grows active; a male takes the characteristic 'T-position' at right angles to her head, and she appears to take his milt at the mouth. The small number of eggs she carries in a basket formed by her clamped pelvic fins are fertilised and then pressed, sticky, onto the chosen surface, the sequence repeating a few eggs at a time until the clutch is complete. The behaviour has not been studied in detail for this particular species, but there is no reason to expect it to depart from the well-documented pattern of its close relatives.

Breeding

Captive breeding of the light cory follows the standard Corydoras approach. Spawning is typically triggered by a cool, large water change imitating the onset of the rainy season. The adhesive eggs are laid in small batches and attached to cleaned surfaces — plant leaves, wood, stones or the glass — and receive no parental care; the adults will eat them, so a breeder removes either the eggs or the parents. Eggs hatch in a few days depending on temperature, and the fry, once their yolk sacs are absorbed, take microworm, baby brine shrimp and fine powdered foods. The species is only occasionally available, so first-hand breeding accounts are limited and the husbandry is largely transferred from better-known congeners.

In the aquarium

The light cory makes an undemanding, peaceful community fish for the aquarist who can source it, with the standard cory requirements. It is strongly social — a fish of multi-dozen schools in the wild — and should be kept in groups of at least six, ideally more, in a tank with generous floor area; kept singly or in pairs it becomes shy and stressed.

Substrate is critical: soft sand or very smooth, rounded fine gravel, because the sifting feeding behaviour is ruined by sharp or coarse grains that erode and infect the barbels. Keep the water warm (about 72–79 °F), clean, well-filtered and well-oxygenated, with gentle flow and regular partial changes; the species tolerates a broad pH and hardness range but is happiest in the soft, slightly acidic water of its native creeks. It is an ideal companion for tetras, pencilfish, hatchetfish and dwarf cichlids, and should not be housed with anything large enough to bully it. As with all corys, lift it with a cup rather than a net to avoid snagging the locking fin spines, and transport carefully, since a distressed cory can release a skin toxin that can prove lethal in the small volume of a bag.

Conservation

Corydoras guianensis is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern (assessed 2020). It is found across the coastal drainages of Suriname and French Guiana, a region whose Guiana Shield rivers remain comparatively well-forested and intact, and the species is not subject to fishery pressure. It appears in the aquarium trade only modestly. None of this exempts it from the broad pressures on neotropical freshwaters — deforestation, mining (notably gold mining, with its mercury and sedimentation), agriculture and pollution can all degrade the clear sandy creeks it favours — but at present the species is judged to be in no danger, with no evidence of significant decline.
