Taxonomy & naming
The bonehead cory was described by the American ichthyologist James E. Böhlke in 1951 and placed, as almost all such fishes were, in the omnibus genus Corydoras Lacépède, 1803 (family Callichthyidae). It is one of the spotted, blunt-headed corys of northern South America, and for more than seventy years it has been written, traded and bred as Corydoras osteocarus.
The genus Corydoras had grown to well over 170 nominal species and was shown by molecular work to be an unnatural, composite group. In 2024 Dias, Tencatt and colleagues published a large phylogeny and revised classification of the Corydoradinae that broke Corydoras into several genera, resurrecting older names — Brochis, Hoplisoma, Gastrodermus, Osteogaster — alongside Aspidoras and Scleromystax. Under that scheme the bonehead cory falls into the short-snouted lineage centred on the type species of Hoplisoma Swainson, 1838 (Hoplisoma punctatum), and its valid combination becomes Hoplisoma osteocarum (the species epithet shifting to the neuter to agree with the genus). FishBase and the specialist literature now list it as Hoplisoma osteocarum; the aquarium world still largely says 'Corydoras osteocarus,' so we keep that as the familiar heading while noting the new name. The epithet itself — from the Greek for 'bone' and 'head' — has long invited the English name 'bonehead,' though the original allusion was simply to the hard, plated head shared by the whole genus.
Morphology
This is one of the smaller corys, reaching only about 1.5 in in standard length. The body is the typical Corydoras shape — short, deep and flat-bellied, with a steeply arched back, a blunt downturned snout and three pairs of barbels fringing the mouth. Two rows of overlapping bony scutes armour each flank and meet along the dorsal ridge; the head is a hard helmet of bone, the feature that gives the genus and this species their names.
The ground colour is a pale tan to greyish, overlaid with a scattering of small dark spots and blotches that can coalesce into a vague band along the side and a darker marking beneath the dorsal fin. The fins are largely clear and lightly speckled. As in all Corydoras, the leading rays of the dorsal and pectoral fins are stiffened into sharp, mildly venomous spines. The pattern is unshowy and somewhat variable, and the species is most reliably told from its many lookalikes by meristic and bony details rather than by colour alone.
Habitat
Corydoras osteocarus is a fish of the Orinoco River basin and the coastal rivers of Suriname and the wider Guianas, in the warm lowlands of northern South America. Like most of its genus it keeps to quieter water — the shallow, sandy margins of streams and rivers, backwaters and flooded edges, over soft sand and mud strewn with leaf litter and submerged wood.
These are warm tropical waters, typically around 70–77 °F, ranging from acidic to neutral or slightly alkaline (about pH 6.0–8.0) and from soft to moderately hard. As a callichthyid it is a facultative air-breather, able to dart to the surface and gulp atmospheric air, absorbing oxygen through a vascularised region of the hindgut — an adaptation that lets corys persist in the warm, oxygen-poor shallows and shrinking dry-season pools they often inhabit.
Feeding
The bonehead cory is a benthic omnivore and detritivore that forages over the bottom, pushing its snout and barbels into sand and leaf litter to taste out small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, worms and the organic film of detritus, and venting cleaned substrate through the gill openings. It is an opportunist rather than a specialist, taking whatever small edible matter the substrate yields. In the aquarium it readily accepts sinking pellets and tablets, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp, and small live foods, working the bottom busily for fallen scraps.
Mating
Like other Corydoras, the bonehead cory is an egg-laying shoaler with no pair bond and the group's characteristic 'T-position' courtship. A ready female cleans a spawning site, and as the group becomes active a male aligns himself at right angles to her head; she appears to take milt directly, the sperm passing rapidly through her gut to fertilise the few eggs she cups in a basket formed by her pelvic fins. She then carries those eggs to the cleaned surface and presses them into place. The sequence repeats, a few eggs at a time, until the clutch is complete. No specific spawning account for this species is well documented, but it is expected to follow the general corydoradine pattern.
Breeding
Detailed captive-breeding reports for Corydoras osteocarus are scarce, but its reproduction is presumed to follow the familiar Corydoras template. Spawning is typically triggered by a cool, large water change that mimics the onset of the rainy season; a group skewed toward more males than females is most productive. The adhesive eggs — laid in small batches and attached to plants, wood or the aquarium glass — receive no parental care, and the adults will eat them, so a breeder removes either the eggs or the parents. Eggs hatch in roughly three to four days at warm temperatures, and the fry, once the yolk sac is absorbed, take microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods and grow steadily.
In the aquarium
This is an undemanding, peaceful catfish well suited to a quiet community tank, but it needs the same basics as any cory. First, it is a shoaling species and must be kept in a group — six or more — to be confident and active rather than nervous and hidden. Because it is small, a modest tank with plenty of clear bottom area suits a group well.
Second, substrate matters: provide soft sand or very smooth, rounded fine gravel. Corys feed by sifting, and sharp or coarse gravel abrades and infects their barbels, leaving them blunted and stubby — a common sign of poor husbandry. Keep the bottom clean and the water warm (around 72–79 °F), well-filtered and well-oxygenated, with a gentle current and regular changes; the species tolerates a broad pH and hardness range. It is an ideal companion for small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids and other calm fish, and should never be housed with anything large enough to bully it. As with all corys, take care in transport: the fin spines can snag in a net, and a badly stressed cory can release a skin toxin that, in the small volume of a bag, may kill the whole group.
Conservation
Corydoras osteocarus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern (assessed in 2020). It is widely distributed across the Orinoco basin and the coastal drainages of the Guianas, occupies a range of shallow habitats and faces no specific, species-level threat. As with all Amazonian and Guianan freshwater fishes, the broad pressures of deforestation, agriculture, pollution and habitat alteration affect the shallow waters it favours, but the species as a whole is not considered at risk. Collection for the aquarium trade is modest and, given its wide range, not a significant pressure.
