Taxonomy & naming
Gosse's cory was described in 1972 by the Dutch ichthyologist Han Nijssen, in the Netherlands Journal of Zoology, from a creek near Guajará-Mirim in Rondônia State, Brazil, within the Rio Mamoré system on the Bolivian border. The specific name gossei honours the Belgian ichthyologist Jean-Pierre Gosse (1924–2001), a curator at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and a specialist in the catfishes of South America and Africa.
For half a century the species sat in Corydoras Lacépède, 1803, the huge genus of South American armoured catfishes (family Callichthyidae) that holds most of the hobby's 'cory cats.' That genus had swollen past 170 species and molecular work showed it was not a single natural lineage. In 2024 Dias, Tencatt and colleagues published a large phylogeny and revised classification of the Corydoradinae that split Corydoras into several genera — among them Brochis, Hoplisoma, Gastrodermus and Osteogaster. Under that scheme Gosse's cory becomes Hoplisoma gossei, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now lists it as 'valid as Hoplisoma gossei (Nijssen 1972).' The change is recent and the aquarium trade still overwhelmingly says 'Corydoras gossei,' so we keep that heading while recording the current combination.
Morphology
This is a fairly large cory by hobby standards, deep-bodied and flat-bellied, reaching about 2 in in standard length — noticeably bigger than the everyday bronze and peppered corys. Like all corydoradines it is armoured rather than scaled: two rows of overlapping bony plates (scutes) run down each flank, the head is a hard, blunt helmet, and three pairs of sensory barbels fringe the downturned mouth.
The colour pattern is what sets it apart. The body is divided: dark — brown to near-black — across the upper half, and a clean yellow-white below. The head is dark, picked out with orange-to-yellow markings, and the stiff leading spines of the dorsal and pectoral fins are the same warm orange-yellow, lending the fish its more evocative German and trade names ('palespotted' refers to the lighter mottling). The remaining fins are mostly clear apart from wavy vertical bars on the caudal fin. The contrast of dark saddle, pale belly and orange-flushed spines makes it one of the more handsome corys — and, written down, an oddly hard one to do justice to. As in all the group, those dorsal, pectoral and adipose spines are stiff and mildly venomous, the standard corydoradine defence.
Habitat
Corydoras gossei is native to the Rio Madeira drainage of the western Amazon basin, specifically the Mamoré–Guaporé system on and around the Brazil–Bolivia border, with its type locality a creek near Guajará-Mirim in Rondônia, Brazil. Within that range it occupies the shallow margins of creeks and tributaries over soft sand, among submerged wood and leaf litter.
These are warm, soft lowland waters where the bottom is the centre of activity. Reported tolerances are broad — temperatures of roughly 72–79 °F, a pH band from about 6.0 to 8.0 and soft to moderately hard water (around 2 to 25 °dH). Like other corydoradines it is a facultative air-breather, periodically darting to the surface to gulp air and absorb oxygen through a vascularised hindgut, an adaptation that lets it survive in warm, low-oxygen pools and shrinking dry-season backwaters.
Feeding
Gosse's cory is a benthic omnivore. In the wild it works the soft bottom continuously, sinking its snout and barbels into sand to taste out small invertebrates, insect larvae, worms and crustaceans along with fallen organic matter, expelling cleaned sand through the gills as it feeds. It is an opportunist, which is part of its hardiness. In the aquarium it readily accepts sinking pellets, granules, tablets and flake that reaches the bottom, and relishes live or frozen bloodworm, white worm, grindal worm, Daphnia and Tubifex — the last especially useful for conditioning a group for spawning. As with all corys it should never be left to live only on a tankmate's leftovers.
Mating
Corydoras gossei is an egg-laying shoaler with no pair bond and the classic corydoradine courtship. When a female is ripe the group becomes active and males pursue her; she permits a male to touch her with his barbels and the pair settle into the 'T-position,' the male at right angles to the female's head, where she appears to take his milt. Sperm is thought to pass rapidly through her gut to fertilise the few eggs she holds in a basket formed by her pelvic fins, which she then carries to a cleaned surface and presses into place. The sequence repeats, a few eggs at a time. A documented spawning ran over five days and produced well over five hundred eggs from a group of one male and four females — though with so few males a large share proved infertile, underlining that this species spawns best with a male-skewed group.
Breeding
Gosse's cory has been bred in the aquarium and is reported as prolific once settled, following the standard Corydoras playbook. A group is conditioned on a wide, protein-rich diet weighted toward live and frozen foods, ideally with more males than females. Spawning is triggered by emulating the rainy season: large daily water changes — on the order of fifty per cent — with markedly cooler water and brisk, well-oxygenated flow, which the fish actively enjoy. The adhesive eggs receive no parental care and the adults will eat them, so breeders remove the parents (or the eggs) and treat the water against fungus. In one detailed account the eggs hatched in about seven days, and over a hundred fry resulted from a single multi-day spawn. Newly hatched fry resemble 'an egg with a tail,' feed on their yolk for the first days, then take microworm followed by newly hatched brine shrimp; kept clean with daily water changes they grow quickly and begin showing adult colour within a couple of months.
In the aquarium
Gosse's cory is a rewarding, hardy community fish, prized for its size and colour, with the usual corydoradine requirements. First, it is a shoaling species and is genuinely stressed when kept alone or in twos — keep a group of six or more and they reward you with constant, confident activity along the bottom. Being a larger cory, a group wants a tank with a generous footprint; bottom area matters more than height.
Second, substrate is close to mandatory rather than decorative: provide soft sand or very smooth, rounded fine gravel, because corys feed by sifting and sharp or coarse grit erodes and infects their barbels, leaving stubby, blunted faces — one of the commonest signs of poor husbandry. Border the open feeding area with driftwood and planting, with shaded retreats from bogwood or tall plants. Water should be warm (about 72–79 °F), well-filtered and well-oxygenated, across a broad pH and hardness range. They are utterly peaceful and make ideal companions for tetras, peaceful barbs, dwarf cichlids and other calm community fish, never anything large enough to bully them. Two standard cautions apply: the fin spines can catch in nets, so a cup is safer; and a distressed cory can release a skin toxin that, in the confined volume of a bag or bucket, can kill the whole group, so transport them with care.
Conservation
Corydoras gossei is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, last evaluated in 2020. It occurs through the Mamoré–Guaporé and wider Madeira system and is tolerant of the warm, shallow, seasonally variable habitats it favours; it is also bred for the aquarium trade, which eases collection pressure on wild stocks. None of that makes it immune to the broad pressures on the Madeira basin in particular — large hydroelectric dams, deforestation, agriculture and mining run-off all alter and degrade its habitat — but as a species it is currently in no danger. Because it is a comparatively localised, single-basin fish rather than a continent-wide complex, continued attention to the health of the Madeira drainage is the sensible long-term watch.
