Taxonomy & naming
The wide cory was described in 1924 by the American ichthyologist Nathan Everett Pearson, from material collected during the Mulford Biological Expedition to the upper Amazonian drainages of Bolivia. He placed it in Corydoras Lacépède, 1803, the great genus of South American armoured catfishes, where it has rested in checklists and the hobby ever since. The epithet latus is Latin for 'broad' or 'wide,' a reference to the relatively deep, stout body that also gives the fish its English name.
The genus Corydoras, with well over 170 species, had long been recognised as an artificial, non-monophyletic grouping. The 2024 phylogenetic revision by Dias, Tencatt and colleagues split it into several genera — including Gastrodermus, Hoplisoma, Brochis and Osteogaster — and under that classification the wide cory falls in Gastrodermus, a lineage that gathers many of the smaller, shorter-snouted corys. The Catalog of Fishes and FishBase now list the valid combination as Gastrodermus latus. As the change is recent and not yet standard in aquarium usage, we retain the familiar Corydoras heading while recording the current placement.
Morphology
This is a small cory, reaching about 2 in in standard length, and — as both its scientific and common names advertise — comparatively broad and deep-bodied for its length. It carries the standard callichthyid armour: two rows of overlapping bony scutes down each flank meeting in a dorsal ridge, and a hard, bony-plated head. The mouth is small, ventral and surrounded by three pairs of barbels for tasting the substrate.
Colour information for wild fish is limited, in keeping with how rarely the species has been collected or photographed; FishBase carries no species photograph, only the generic family illustration. As in all corys, the dorsal and pectoral fins bear stiff defensive spines. Detailed, measured accounts of sexual dimorphism specific to this species are not available, though females in the genus are generally the larger, rounder sex.
Habitat
Corydoras latus is recorded from the Beni River basin in Bolivia — an upper-Amazon system draining the eastern Andean foothills, with the type material coming from the piedmont zone at moderate elevation. This is a fish of the Andean-margin tributaries and their shallows rather than the lowland main channels far downstream.
FishBase frames its environment in the genus-typical way: a tropical freshwater, demersal species comfortable across a pH band of roughly 6.0 to 8.0, soft to moderately hard water, and temperatures of about 72–79 °F. Like other callichthyids it is a facultative air-breather, periodically darting to the surface to gulp air and extract oxygen through a modified, vascularised hindgut — the adaptation that lets corys survive in warm, low-oxygen pools and shrinking dry-season shallows.
Feeding
No targeted feeding study exists for the wide cory, but its form and its relatives make its ecology clear: it is a benthic omnivore and detritivore. It works the bottom, ploughing snout and barbels through sand and leaf litter to find small invertebrates, insect larvae, worms, micro-crustaceans and the organic detritus film, expelling sieved sand through the gills. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.0 — the signature of a small, opportunistic invertebrate-and-detritus feeder rather than a specialist.
Mating
The courtship of Corydoras latus has not been recorded, but corys are strikingly uniform in their reproductive behaviour and this species is expected to conform. They are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond. When ready, a female cleans a spawning surface; a male adopts the classic 'T-position' at right angles to her head, and she appears to take milt directly, the sperm passing quickly through her gut to fertilise the few eggs cupped in a basket made by her pelvic fins. She carries that small clutch to the cleaned site and presses the sticky eggs down, repeating until the spawning is finished.
Breeding
There are no published captive-breeding accounts for the wide cory, which is too scarce in the hobby to have a known protocol. The genus as a whole typically spawns after a cool, large water change simulating the rains; the adhesive eggs are laid in small batches on firm surfaces, given no parental care (and eaten by the adults if left), and hatch within a few days into fry that take microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods. Whether the specific triggers, clutch size and timing for this Andean-piedmont species match that pattern is unknown, and no figures will be invented here.
In the aquarium
Corydoras latus is, in practice, a rarity that few aquarists will ever encounter, but the standard cory husbandry would apply. It is a shoaling fish that needs the company of its own kind — keep six or more, never one or two — and a soft sand substrate, which for corys is a welfare necessity rather than a decorative choice: coarse or sharp gravel erodes and infects the barbels they feed with.
This would be a fish for a peaceful, planted tank with clean, well-oxygenated water, gentle filtration, moderate temperatures around 72–79 °F and quiet tankmates such as small tetras and other calm community species. The familiar cory cautions apply: the fin spines snag in nets (a cup is safer), and a severely stressed cory can release a skin toxin capable of killing the whole group inside the small volume of a bag or bucket, so it should be moved with care.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Corydoras latus as Least Concern (assessed 2020). It occupies the Beni system of the Bolivian upper Amazon, a region still largely forested, and no species-specific threat has been identified. That status, as for many narrowly documented headwater corys, rests on sparse data: if its true range is confined to a small part of the Andean piedmont, localised pressures — deforestation, alluvial mining run-off, road-building and the pollution of foothill streams — could weigh more heavily than the broad assessment suggests. At present, though, there is no evidence of decline.
