Taxonomy & naming
Bujurquina tambopatae was described by Sven O. Kullander in his 1986 monograph Cichlid Fishes of the Amazon River Drainage of Peru, a work that reorganised much of the country's small-acara fauna. In the same study Kullander erected the genus Bujurquina itself (type species Bujurquina moriorum) to hold a group of biparentally custodial 'primitive' or delayed mouthbrooding acaras that had previously been lumped into the catch-all genus Aequidens, and he named more than a dozen new species from the western Amazon basin in one stroke — tambopatae among them. The species was therefore described in its current combination from the outset; there is no earlier name and no synonymy. The Catalog of Fishes lists it as valid as Bujurquina tambopatae Kullander 1986, a status reaffirmed in the Reis et al. (2003) checklist of South American freshwater fishes and in subsequent geophagine and cichlasomatine systematic work (Arbour & López-Fernández 2014; Říčan et al. 2022). It sits in the subfamily Cichlinae, tribe Cichlasomatini, alongside the rest of Bujurquina. The type material was collected at the Quebrada San Roque on the Puerto Maldonado–Cuzco road, in the Río Tambopata drainage of Departamento Madre de Dios, Peru: the holotype is NRM 17580 and the nine paratypes NRM 17579, all held at the Swedish Museum of Natural History (Naturhistoriska riksmuseet, Stockholm). Because most Bujurquina look broadly alike, the species is reliably separated only on fine characters — thick lips, the absence of caudal streamers' light submarginal banding, a caudal peduncle of roughly 10.7–12.5% of standard length, and an emarginate tail with prominent streamers in males — features compiled by Loiselle (1990) into an aquarist's key to the Peruvian species.
Morphology
This is a small cichlid: Kullander's type series gave a maximum of about 3 in in standard length (snout to tail base), so total length including the tail is on the order of 4 in, and it is among the more modestly sized members of its genus. The body is the typical 'acara' shape — moderately deep, laterally compressed, with a rounded head and a continuous dorsal fin — but two features help pin it down. The lips are notably thick, a trait it shares within Peru only with Bujurquina eurhinus and Bujurquina labiosa; and mature males develop an emarginate (forked or notched) caudal fin drawn out into prominent filamentous streamers on the upper and lower lobes. Ground colour in life is a warm olive-brown to tan, paler below, overlaid with the colour-pattern elements that define the genus: a dark mid-lateral band running back along the flank, a suborbital stripe through the cheek, and a dark blotch on the caudal peduncle. The dorsal-fin lappets (the small flaps between the spine tips) are light, pink to reddish in living fish and bordered by a single narrow dark submarginal band — a combination Loiselle used to key the species. Sexual dimorphism is real but subtle: males grow somewhat larger and carry the long caudal streamers, while ripe females are rounder-bodied; outside breeding condition the sexes are otherwise hard to tell apart, as is usual for the genus.
Habitat
Bujurquina tambopatae is a fish of small headwater streams in the southwestern Amazon. Its confirmed range lies in the Río Tambopata and the wider Madre de Dios drainage of southeastern Peru — part of the upper Madeira system, the great southern tributary of the Amazon — within what biogeographers call the Mamoré–Madre de Dios Piedmont freshwater ecoregion. The Catalog of Fishes extends the distribution provisionally to the Madeira drainage of the western Amazon basin and flags possible occurrence in adjacent Bolivia, but the species was for a long time known only from its type locality, and Peruvian records remain the secure core of its range. It lives in quebradas — forest brooks and small streams — over bottoms of sand and mud with sparse gravel, the soft-substrate, leaf-littered habitat characteristic of the genus. These are warm, soft, mildly acidic lowland and piedmont waters typical of clear- and blackwater Amazonian headwaters: temperatures generally in the mid-20s Celsius and pH on the acidic side of neutral. Being a small, shallow-stream fish it occupies the upper metre or so of the water column and margins rather than deep open water; FishBase classes it as benthopelagic, feeding and moving near the bottom but ranging up into midwater.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Bujurquina tambopatae has been published, but its trophic position can be read from its anatomy, its habitat and its relatives. FishBase estimates a trophic level of about 3.4, placing it as an omnivore with a carnivorous lean — the general pattern across Bujurquina, which are described as living singly or in pairs near the bottom and feeding opportunistically. In the leaf-litter brooks it inhabits, that translates to a diet of small benthic invertebrates (aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans and other meiofauna), supplemented by detritus, fallen plant material and the small organisms that live among submerged leaves and wood. Like other small acaras it works the substrate and the litter layer, picking and sifting rather than pursuing prey in open water. In its stream community it is a mid-level forager — predator on invertebrates, prey in turn for larger fish, birds and the other piscivores of an Amazonian headwater.
Mating
Bujurquina species are pair-bonding cichlids, and tambopatae conforms to the genus pattern of monogamous, biparental reproduction. Outside the type-locality collections little has been recorded specifically for this species, so the account here draws on the well-documented behaviour of its congeners, several of which have been spawned in aquaria. A male and female form a pair and together hold a small territory; courtship involves the usual cichlid repertoire of lateral displays, fin-spreading, mouth-to-mouth sparring and joint defence of the chosen spawning site. There is no harem and no female-only territoriality of the sort seen in some other Neotropical genera — both partners share the work, and the bond persists through the comparatively long period of mouthbrooding care that follows. As in most small acaras, pairs can be quarrelsome when first introduced and a mismatched pair may fight, but an established pair is generally cooperative rather than antagonistic toward each other.
Breeding
The reproductive biology is the most interesting thing about Bujurquina, and it is what unites the genus. These are delayed (larvophile) biparental mouthbrooders — a halfway house between the substrate-spawning ancestral condition and full mouthbrooding. The pair first spawns in the open, depositing the eggs not on a fixed rock or cave wall but on a movable object: a fallen leaf, a twig, or a flat portable surface. Both parents guard and fan the clutch where it lies for the first day or two, and the loose substrate lets them shift the whole batch if threatened. Once the eggs hatch, the parents take the wrigglers into their mouths and carry them — alternating or sharing the load — through the larval stage, releasing the free-swimming fry to forage and gathering them back up at any disturbance, and continuing buccal shelter and guarding for some weeks after release. FishBase records for Bujurquina note exactly this for the genus: 'larvae and eggs have been found in the mouth of these fishes,' and for the close relative Bujurquina syspilus that 'eggs are deposited on leaves and guarded by both parents; larvae are taken into the mouth.' Clutches in the genus are modest — congeners typically produce on the order of a few dozen to a couple of hundred eggs — consistent with a small fish investing heavily in each brood. The specific spawning of Bujurquina tambopatae has not been documented in detail in the wild or, to public record, in aquaria; the description above is the firmly established genus-typical mode, which this species is expected to follow.
In the aquarium
Bujurquina tambopatae is essentially never seen in the aquarium trade. It comes from the Madre de Dios drainage in extreme southeastern Peru, a region that — as Loiselle pointed out in his key to the Peruvian species — is not readily worked by the commercial collectors based in Iquitos who supply most Peruvian ornamental exports. Together with its close neighbours Bujurquina eurhinus and Bujurquina cortemadi, it is therefore among the least likely Bujurquina to turn up in a shipment; the species commonly exported as 'Bujurquina' or under old Aequidens names are the Iquitos-area fish (Bujurquina syspilus, Bujurquina moriorum, Bujurquina peregrinabunda), not this one.
No species-specific husbandry account exists for tambopatae, so any keeping advice is extrapolated from the genus, which is undemanding when its needs are met. A small, peaceful acara of about 3–4 in, it would suit a tank in the region of 20–25 US gal for a single pair, more in a community. The biotope to recreate is a soft, warm Amazonian forest brook: a sandy or fine bottom with leaf litter, driftwood and roots for cover and sightline breaks, gentle flow, subdued lighting, and water that is soft and mildly acidic — pH around 6.0–7.0 and temperature about 73–81 °F — with the large, regular water changes these stream fish appreciate. Because the genus spawns on movable surfaces and then mouthbroods, breeding attempts are best served by leaving broad plant leaves or flat portable objects in the tank rather than relying on caves. Tankmates should be small, peaceful soft-water species; like most small acaras a pair will hold a territory and can squabble, but they are not large or especially aggressive fish. The honest summary is that this is a rarely available, little-kept species whose aquarium care has to be inferred from its better-known relatives.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Bujurquina tambopatae as Least Concern. The assessment was carried out on 22 April 2014 by M. Hidalgo del Aguila and L. Chocano and published in 2016, and the population trend is listed as stable. The reasoning is that, despite its restricted known range, the species has a reasonably wide distribution within the Madre de Dios drainage, is locally common, and faces no major basin-wide threat. The one specific concern the assessors raised is localised: some subpopulations are exposed to water pollution from illegal gold mining in the region, an activity that releases sediment and mercury into the very headwater streams this fish inhabits and that has expanded sharply across Madre de Dios in recent decades. A countervailing positive is that much of the Tambopata catchment lies within protected areas — the Tambopata National Reserve and the broader Madre de Dios conservation landscape — which affords part of the range some legal shelter. The species carries no CITES or CMS listing. As a small, range-restricted headwater endemic it is inherently more exposed to local habitat degradation than the basin's widespread generalists, so the Least Concern status should be read against the backdrop of an Amazonian frontier region under growing pressure from mining, deforestation and road expansion.
