Taxonomy & naming
Corydoras seussi was described by Bernd Dinkelmeyer in 1996, and named in honour of the German ichthyologist Dr Werner Seuss. Before description it circulated in the hobby as C027, one of the provisional collection codes used for undescribed corys. It belongs to the family Callichthyidae and subfamily Corydoradinae, in the deeper-bodied, intermediate-snouted segment of the group — closely resembling C. gossei, from which it is distinguished by its less rounded snout.
The species sat in the large genus Corydoras Lacépède, 1803, which the 2024 revision by Dias, Tencatt and colleagues (Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society) showed to be non-monophyletic and split into several genera. C. seussi falls in Lineage 8, sub-clade 4 — the 'intermediate long-snouts' — and is referred to the resurrected genus Brochis Cope, 1871. Its current valid combination is therefore Brochis seussi, and FishBase now follows this placement; we keep the hobby-familiar 'Corydoras seussi' as the heading while noting the new genus. (Brochis had earlier been synonymised with Corydoras by Britto in 2003; the 2024 work resurrects it.)
Morphology
This is a relatively deep, robust cory with a moderately elongate but not truly long snout — an 'intermediate' profile between the blunt-faced and the true longnose corys. It reaches roughly 2.5–3 in; FishBase gives about 2.5 in standard length, while aquarist sources cite total lengths nearer 3 in. The body wears the usual two rows of overlapping bony scutes, with three pairs of barbels at the downturned mouth.
In colour it is patterned much like its near-relative C. gossei: a network of dark reticulation and spotting over a lighter ground, the markings giving a marbled appearance across the flank. The principal feature separating it from gossei is the shape of the snout, which is less rounded. The dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins each bear a stiff defensive spine. Females in condition are noticeably rounder and broader than the slimmer males, most obvious viewed from above.
Habitat
Corydoras seussi is native to the Río Mamoré basin, a major Madeira-system drainage straddling the Bolivia–Brazil border; records also place it in associated tributaries of the upper system. It is a fish of warm, generally clear to slightly stained streams and river margins over sand and fine sediment, with leaf litter and submerged wood.
Reported parameters fall within the standard cory band — temperatures around 72–79 °F, a pH from acidic to near-neutral (about 6.0–7.2) and soft to moderately hard water (roughly 2–12 °dGH). Like all corys it is a facultative air-breather, surfacing to gulp air that it absorbs through a vascularised hindgut, an adaptation that lets it cope with warm, oxygen-poor water in the shallows and dry-season pools.
Feeding
C. seussi is a benthic omnivore and detritivore. It forages over the bottom, probing sand and sediment with its barbels to taste out insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms and the organic detritus of the substrate, and passing cleaned sand out through the gill openings. In the aquarium it readily accepts sinking dried foods — pellets, tablets and granules — alongside live and frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and chopped earthworm. A varied diet keeps it in condition; it should not be relied upon merely to clean up after tankmates.
Mating
No spawning account specific to C. seussi has been published, but the corys' courtship is uniform and well-studied. They are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond. A ready female cleans a spawning site and the group becomes active; a male takes the characteristic 'T-position' at right angles to her head, and she appears to take milt into her mouth, fertilising the few eggs she clasps in a basket formed by her pelvic fins. She presses each small batch onto the cleaned surface, and the sequence repeats until the eggs are distributed across plants, wood and glass.
Breeding
C. seussi is not commonly bred in the aquarium and no clutch data specific to it are recorded, so its reproduction is expected to follow the genus pattern. The usual trigger is to condition the group well and then perform a cool, generous water change — lowering the temperature several degrees and raising oxygenation to imitate the onset of the rains. The adhesive eggs are laid in small batches and receive no parental care; adults will eat them, so breeders remove the eggs or the parents. Eggs hatch in roughly three to four days, and the fry take microworm and baby brine shrimp once the yolk sac is absorbed.
In the aquarium
A robust, attractively marbled cory occasionally imported as wild stock under the C027 label. As a shoaling species it needs a group of six or more; singly or in pairs it is stressed and retiring, and a group rewards the keeper with steady, confident activity. Floor area matters more than height. Soft sand is strongly preferred — corys feed by sifting the substrate, and sharp or coarse gravel abrades and infects the barbels, leaving the eroded faces that mark poor husbandry. Keep the bottom clean, the water warm (about 72–79 °F), well-filtered, well-oxygenated and gently flowing, with regular water changes. It is peaceful and community-safe with tetras, rasboras, pencilfish and calm dwarf cichlids. Handle with a container rather than a net, because the fin spines snag, and move them carefully, since a badly stressed cory can release skin toxins lethal to the group in the small volume of a bag.
Conservation
Corydoras seussi (Brochis seussi) has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN, so it carries no Red List category — we record this honestly rather than assume one. It is a fairly localised species of the Río Mamoré system, collected for the ornamental trade in modest numbers. Without an assessment, the realistic concerns are the general ones for the region's headwater and river-margin habitats — deforestation, agricultural run-off, sedimentation and pollution — but its conservation status remains formally unknown.
