Taxonomy & naming
Corydoras hephaestus was described in 2016 by Willian Ohara, Luiz Tencatt and Marcelo Britto, in a paper memorably subtitled 'wrapped in flames,' from material collected in the upper Rio Machado, part of the Rio Madeira basin in Rondônia State, Brazil. It was placed within the broad aeneus-like group of Corydoras — the bronze-bodied, relatively short-snouted corys of the family Callichthyidae.
The genus Corydoras Lacépède, 1803 had by then swollen past 170 species and was shown by molecular work to be an unnatural grouping. In 2024 Dias, Tencatt and colleagues published a large phylogenetic revision of the Corydoradinae that split the genus into several lineages — among them Brochis, Hoplisoma, Gastrodermus and the resurrected Osteogaster Cope, 1894 (type species the eques-group corys). Under that scheme the fire cory becomes Osteogaster hephaestus, sitting alongside the true aeneus, eques, rabauti and zygatus. The combination is recent and the hobby still says 'Corydoras hephaestus,' so we keep that heading while recording the current placement.
Morphology
This is one of the smaller corys, reaching only about 1.5 in in standard length; females grow slightly larger and deeper-bodied than the roughly 1.5 in males. The build is the standard Corydoras plan: a stocky, flat-bellied body sheathed in two overlapping rows of bony scutes rather than scales, a hard helmeted head, and three pairs of barbels fringing a small downturned mouth.
What sets it apart is colour. The body is largely dark — a deep brownish-black over most of the flank, head and dorsum — while the abdomen and lower head stay pale. Against that dark ground the fins and lower body carry warm orange-to-red flushes, brightest in life, which is exactly what the describers meant by 'wrapped in flames' and what the name hephaestus, the smith-god of fire, alludes to. The dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins each bear the stiff locking spine typical of the genus.
Habitat
Corydoras hephaestus is known from the upper Rio Machado and nearby tributaries within the Rio Madeira basin, in Rondônia State, western Brazil — a clear-to-tea-stained headwater country of the southern Amazon. The type material came from a small tributary of the Igarapé Piracolina near the BR-364 road, the kind of modest forest stream this fish favours.
It lives over substrates of sand and accumulated dead leaves, in the demersal bottom zone, in soft and mildly acidic to neutral water — recorded around pH 6.0 to 7.5. Like all corys it is a facultative air-breather, periodically darting to the surface to gulp air and absorb oxygen through a vascularised hindgut, an adaptation suited to the warm, sometimes low-oxygen forest streams it inhabits.
Feeding
As a benthic member of the bronze-cory group, Corydoras hephaestus feeds by sifting the bottom: it buries its snout and barbels in sand and leaf litter to taste out small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, fallen organic matter and detritus, passing cleaned substrate out through the gill openings. It is an opportunistic omnivore rather than a specialist. In aquaria its diet is met by sinking prepared foods, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp and other small sinking fare, but — as with all corys — it should be fed directly rather than left to scavenge leftovers.
Mating
No spawning of Corydoras hephaestus has been documented in detail, but corys of the aeneus group share a stereotyped, well-studied courtship and there is no reason to expect this species differs. The fish are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond. A ripe female cleans a surface and the group grows active; a male takes up the classic 'T-position' at right angles to her head, and the female appears to take milt into her mouth, which passes rapidly through the gut to fertilise the small clutch of eggs she clasps in a basket formed by her pelvic fins. She presses these onto the cleaned site and the sequence repeats, a few eggs at a time.
Breeding
There is no published account of Corydoras hephaestus being bred in captivity, and it remains uncommon in the trade, so the specifics — clutch size, egg size, fry development — are not established for this species. By analogy with its close relatives in the aeneus/Osteogaster group, spawning would be expected to follow a cool, large water change mimicking the rains, producing adhesive eggs scattered on plants, wood and glass and receiving no parental care, with eggs hatching in a few days and fry taking microworm and baby brine shrimp once free-swimming. These expectations should be treated as inference, not record, until someone documents it.
In the aquarium
Corydoras hephaestus is a rarely traded, small and rather striking cory that would suit a quiet blackwater-style community. As with all corys it is a shoaling fish and should be kept in groups of six or more, where it is far more confident and active; it is stressed and withdrawn when kept singly. A modest tank with a generous footprint suits it, since bottom area matters more than height.
Substrate is critical: provide soft sand or very fine, smooth, rounded gravel, because corys feed by sifting and sharp or coarse grit erodes and infects their barbels, leaving the blunted faces that mark poor husbandry. Soft, mildly acidic, warm and well-oxygenated water with leaf litter best reflects its forest-stream origins. It is utterly peaceful and belongs only with small, gentle tankmates — tetras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids and the like. Two standard cory cautions apply: the fin spines tangle in nets, so a cup is safer, and a badly stressed cory can release a skin toxin that, in the confined volume of a bag, can kill the whole group, so transport with care.
Conservation
Corydoras hephaestus has been assessed by the IUCN as Vulnerable, under criterion D2 — a category reflecting a very restricted known range that leaves it exposed to a plausible future threat. It is recorded only from a small area of the upper Rio Machado and nearby streams in the Rio Madeira basin, and headwater habitats of this kind in Rondônia face pressure from deforestation, road-building, agriculture and associated run-off. Because the species is local rather than widespread, those pressures weigh more heavily on it than on the ubiquitous bronze cory. It is not a major aquarium-trade fish, so collection is not the principal concern; habitat integrity is.
