Taxonomy & naming
Corydoras isbrueckeri was described by Joachim Knaack in 2004, in a paper (Zoologische Abhandlungen 54) that named six new Corydoras at once. The type material came from a seasonally flooded plain a few kilometres from Trinidad, in the Río Mamoré drainage of Beni, Bolivia — part of the upper Madeira basin. The epithet honours Isaäc J. H. Isbrücker, the Dutch ichthyologist who spent a career untangling the taxonomy of the South American armoured catfishes, and who co-authored many Corydoras descriptions himself.
For two centuries almost every cory was filed under Corydoras Lacépède, 1803, but molecular work showed that genus to be an artificial assemblage of several distinct lineages. The 2024 revision by Dias, Tencatt and colleagues split it into a series of genera, and under that scheme isbrueckeri falls into the resurrected Brochis — the lineage of the larger, straight- or long-snouted corys — giving the combination Brochis isbrueckeri. The corydorasworld.com classification and FishBase both now carry it as Brochis. The aquarium world still says 'Corydoras isbrueckeri,' so we keep that as the heading while noting the current combination.
Morphology
This is a modestly sized cory, the largest known specimen a female of about 2.5 in standard length. Its defining feature is the snout: long, tapered and gently pointed, the 'long-nose' face that distinguishes it from the round-headed bronze corys it otherwise resembles in build and armour. Like all Corydoradinae it wears two overlapping rows of bony scutes down each flank rather than scales, with a hard helmet of bone over the head and three pairs of barbels fringing the small, downturned mouth.
The body is a pale pinkish-bronze with the metallic sheen typical of the group, overlaid by fine dark speckling that varies between individuals. As in its relatives the dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins each carry a stiff leading spine. Long-snouted corys of this kind very often occur alongside a short-snouted species of near-identical colour pattern, a mimetic pairing common across the subfamily.
Habitat
Corydoras isbrueckeri is known from the lowlands of the Río Mamoré drainage in Beni, Bolivia — the southwestern reach of the vast Madeira basin, itself the largest tributary system of the Amazon. The type locality is a seasonally inundated floodplain near the city of Trinidad, the kind of shallow, sun-warmed standing or slow-moving water that fills across the wet season and shrinks back in the dry.
These are warm tropical waters over soft substrates of sand, mud and leaf litter. Specific published water chemistry for the species is scarce, but its floodplain habitat implies the warm, soft, often slightly acidic and seasonally variable conditions general to the upper Madeira lowlands. Like other corys it is a facultative air-breather, gulping surface air and absorbing oxygen through a vascularised hindgut — an adaptation that suits exactly these warm, oxygen-poor floodplain pools.
Feeding
Like its relatives, Corydoras isbrueckeri is a benthic omnivore and detritivore. It works the bottom with its long snout and barbels, sifting sand and soft sediment for small invertebrates, insect larvae, worms and the organic film of detritus. The elongated snout of the long-nose corys is generally taken to be a foraging adaptation, letting them probe more deeply and finely into the substrate than their blunt-faced counterparts. No detailed dietary study of this particular species has been published; the picture is inferred from its anatomy and from the well-documented habits of the group.
Mating
No spawning of Corydoras isbrueckeri has been documented, so its reproductive behaviour is inferred from the subfamily, whose courtship is well studied and remarkably uniform. Corydoradinae are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond. A receptive female cleans a surface, and a male takes up the characteristic 'T-position' at right angles to her head; she appears to take milt into her mouth, fertilising the few eggs she cradles in a basket of her pelvic fins before pressing them onto the cleaned site. The sequence repeats, a few eggs at a time. Whether isbrueckeri follows this pattern exactly is untested, though there is no reason to expect it to differ.
Breeding
There is no published account of Corydoras isbrueckeri being bred in captivity, and the species is rare in the hobby. This is consistent with a broader pattern: among the mimetic short- and long-snouted cory pairs, the short-snouted forms are often prolific in aquaria while the long-snouted species are seldom, if ever, spawned. By analogy with the subfamily, any spawning would likely follow a cool, heavy water change mimicking the rainy season, producing a clutch of adhesive eggs given no parental care. Until a confirmed breeding is recorded, this remains expectation rather than fact.
In the aquarium
Corydoras isbrueckeri is rarely available and is not a beginner's fish; it reaches keepers mostly as occasional wild imports rather than tank-bred stock. As with all corys, the essentials are a soft sand substrate — long-snouted species are especially prone to barbel erosion and infection on sharp or dirty gravel — a group of six or more for security, and clean, well-oxygenated water with a gentle current. Floodplain origins suggest warm, soft, slightly acidic water suits it, though it has not been kept widely enough to pin down a tested range. It is a peaceful, sociable bottom-dweller best matched with calm, similarly sized community fish. As with its relatives, take care in transport: a stressed cory can release skin toxins that, in the small volume of a bag, may kill the whole group.
Conservation
The IUCN assessed Corydoras isbrueckeri in 2014 and listed it as Data Deficient — there is not enough information on its distribution, population or threats to judge its status. It is known from a limited area of the Bolivian Madeira lowlands and from few collections, which is itself a flag for caution: a narrowly recorded species can be more vulnerable than a widespread one. The general pressures on the region — agricultural expansion, deforestation and the damming of the Madeira's main stem — affect the floodplain habitats it depends on. Better survey data would be needed before its true conservation status could be settled.
