Taxonomy & naming
Corydoras esperanzae was described in 1987 by D. M. Castro, in work on the armoured catfishes of Colombia, from the río Meta drainage. The epithet is a patronym: Castro named the species esperanzae in honour of his wife, Esperanza Rocha, for her help in preparing his work on Colombian Corydoras. (The Spanish word esperanza also means 'hope,' a pleasant double meaning, but the name is a dedication rather than a descriptive term.)
It remained Corydoras esperanzae for decades. In the 2024 revision of the Corydoradinae by Dias, Tencatt and colleagues (DOI 10.1093/zoolinnean/zlae053), which split the old super-genus Corydoras into several genera, this round-snouted species falls within the resurrected genus Hoplisoma, and FishBase now lists it under the valid combination Hoplisoma esperanzae. It is worth noting that the species is sometimes confused in the literature with Hoplisoma concolor (another Meta-basin cory), but the two are treated as distinct valid species in the current classification. The revision is recent and the species is rarely written about at all, so we keep the long-standing Corydoras heading while recording the current genus.
Morphology
Corydoras esperanzae is a small, short-snouted cory reaching about 2 in in standard length. Like all members of the subfamily it is armoured rather than scaled, with two longitudinal rows of overlapping bony plates running along each flank, a hard bony head, and three pairs of barbels around the downturned mouth used to sift the substrate. The body is the typical compact, deep-bellied cory shape.
Detailed published descriptions of its live colour are sparse; it is a relatively plain, brownish round-snouted cory of the kind common in the llanos drainages, without the bold markings that make some of its relatives popular. As in all corys the dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins each bear a stiff, locking spine. Because the species is so seldom kept or photographed, finer points of its appearance and any sexual differences beyond the usual cory pattern are not well documented.
Habitat
Corydoras esperanzae is known from the río Meta basin — the great eastern-Colombian tributary of the Orinoco that drains the llanos plains, with Orocué (the source of one of its common names) on the río Meta itself. These are warm lowland waters of the seasonally flooded plains: slow streams, channels and floodplain pools over sand and mud, the quiet-margin habitat typical of corys.
FishBase records it as a freshwater, demersal, tropical species; specific measured water-chemistry figures for esperanzae are limited, but the llanos setting implies warm, soft-to-moderate, near-neutral water in the broad tropical range, varying strongly with the wet and dry seasons. As a callichthyid it is a facultative air-breather, surfacing to gulp air and absorb oxygen across a vascularised hindgut — an adaptation well suited to the warm, oxygen-poor pools of the dry-season llanos.
Feeding
Corydoras esperanzae is a benthic omnivore and detritivore in the manner of the whole subfamily. It forages over the bottom, probing sand and litter with its barbels for small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans and organic detritus, sifting substrate through the mouth and venting it through the gills. No diet study specific to this species has been published; this is the standard corydoradine feeding mode applied to it, and there is no indication it is anything other than a generalist.
Mating
As an egg-laying corydoradine, Corydoras esperanzae is expected to spawn in the group's characteristic 'T-position': shoaling fish with no pair bond, in which a male aligns at right angles to a receptive female, who clasps a few adhesive eggs in a basket of her pelvic fins and presses them onto a cleaned surface, repeating until the clutch is laid. No courtship has been observed or described for esperanzae, so this is the genus pattern applied to it rather than a documented account of this species.
Breeding
There is no published breeding record for Corydoras esperanzae. It is essentially absent from the ornamental trade and not bred in captivity, so clutch size, egg development and fry-rearing are unknown for the species. If it follows its relatives it would lay a modest clutch of adhesive eggs in small batches with no parental care, the adults likely eating unguarded eggs — but, lacking any observation of this species, that is purely inference from the genus rather than fact about esperanzae.
In the aquarium
Corydoras esperanzae is effectively unknown in the hobby: it is not commercially bred, not a regular import, and there is no body of aquarist experience with it. A keeper who somehow obtained wild specimens should treat it as a typical llanos round-snouted cory — a shoaling species to be kept in groups of six or more, over soft sand to protect the barbels, in clean, warm (about 72–79 °F), well-filtered and well-oxygenated water with the broad pH and hardness tolerance typical of the genus. It would be a peaceful community fish among small, calm tankmates. None of this is established practice for the species; it is the sensible default for a cory of this provenance, and the honest position is that its captive husbandry has simply not been worked out.
Conservation
Corydoras esperanzae is classified by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient, in an assessment dated 7 October 2020 — meaning there is not enough information on its distribution, population and threats to assign a meaningful risk category. It is known from a limited area of the río Meta basin and is seldom collected or studied, which is exactly why its status cannot be resolved. The llanos freshwaters of eastern Colombia face pressures from agriculture, cattle ranching, oil development and seasonal habitat change, and a poorly-known, possibly narrowly-distributed fish could be more vulnerable than the bare 'Data Deficient' label suggests; equally it may prove secure once surveyed. The honest summary is that we do not yet know, and that is what the assessment records. Collection for the aquarium trade is negligible.
