Paramormyrops is a genus of weakly electric mormyrid fish - elephantfishes - native to river systems of Central Africa, with the atlas's 10 species drawn from Gabon, Cameroon, Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Republic of the Congo. Several common names in the atlas, including the Ivindo mormyrid and Ivindo electric fish, point to the Ogooué-Ivindo system of Gabon, a region long noted for unusually dense mormyrid diversity. Like other mormyrids, Paramormyrops carries a large, well-developed cerebellum for its body size, a snout adapted for probing soft substrate, and a weak electric organ used both to electrolocate prey and obstacles in dark or turbid water and to signal to other fish. Atlas species run 2–9.5 in.
Paramormyrops is chiefly of scientific rather than hobby interest. It is a well-studied genus in neuroethology and evolutionary biology, used as a model for how electric-organ-discharge waveforms diversify rapidly between closely related species living side by side - a textbook case of signal-driven divergence - and it rarely if ever turns up in the aquarium trade, unlike the larger elephantnose fish sold under other mormyrid genera. Conservation data remain thin (3 Data Deficient, 1 Not Evaluated), but three of the ten atlas species are assessed Vulnerable, consistent with a genus of narrow-range Central African forest-stream endemics facing mounting habitat pressure.
