Paramormyrops retrodorsalis is a small, little-known mormyrid known only from a single forest brook in the Congo basin of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a member of one of the oldest surviving branches of the bony fishes, the Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against a toothed pad on the roof of the mouth. Like every mormyrid it is weakly electric: an organ in the tail generates a species-specific pulse discharge used to electrolocate in dark water and, in all likelihood, to signal to others of its kind. Described in 1917 and reaching only about 11.4 cm, it is a data-poor, single-locality fish that has never been reported in the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Paramormyrops retrodorsalis was described in 1917 by the American ichthyologists John Treadwell Nichols and Ludlow Griscom, working from material collected during an early-twentieth-century American Museum of Natural History expedition to the Congo basin. It belongs to the family Mormyridae, the elephantnoses and mormyrids, within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — one of the most ancient living lineages of teleost fish, a scattered radiation found today on four continents (South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia) that traces back deep into the fossil record. FishBase and the wider literature treat Paramormyrops retrodorsalis as a valid species within a genus of roughly eleven currently recognised species.

The genus name combines the Greek prefix para- ("beside" or "resembling") with Mormyrops, a related mormyrid genus whose own name derives from mormyros, an old Greek name for a marine sea bream, plus ops, "face" or "appearance" — together, roughly "resembling Mormyrops". The species epithet retrodorsalis joins the Latin retro- ("backward, behind") with dorsalis ("of the back"), most plausibly describing a dorsal fin set unusually far back on the body relative to its close relatives — the kind of fin-position detail that separates similar-looking small mormyrids from one another.

Morphology

Paramormyrops retrodorsalis is a small mormyrid with an elongate, laterally compressed body, reaching a maximum recorded length of about 4.5 in standard length (FishBase) — one of the smaller species in a genus of already modestly sized fish, well short of the larger, more familiar Gnathonemus and Mormyrus elephantnoses. Coloration is described as light brown to olive over the back, fading to a paler underside, a muted pattern typical of small forest-stream mormyrids that rely on electrolocation rather than vision or camouflage to navigate.

As in all mormyrids, an electric organ in the caudal peduncle generates a weak, species-specific pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD) that the fish uses to sense its surroundings and, most likely, to communicate with other individuals — the family is noted for one of the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish group, built around an unusually large, folded cerebellum that processes this constant electrosensory stream. Detailed anatomical description beyond size, body shape and coloration has not been located for this species; like many small Paramormyrops, it is reported as solitary or living in small groups.

Habitat

Paramormyrops retrodorsalis is known only from a single small forest brook, a tributary of the Bima River in the Uele drainage of the middle Congo River basin, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is a demersal, bottom-associated freshwater fish of tropical Central African streams, and no other locality for the species has been reported.

Congo basin forest brooks of this kind are typically shaded, tannin-stained and low in visibility — the dim, dark habitat that electrolocation evolved to read, letting a mormyrid sense food, obstacles and other fish without relying on sight. No temperature, pH or other water-chemistry measurements specific to this brook or to Paramormyrops retrodorsalis itself have been published; the ranges given below reflect general Mormyridae husbandry practice for similar African stream species rather than a measured value for this exact locality.

Feeding

FishBase notes explicitly that no species-specific dietary data are available for Paramormyrops retrodorsalis. Mormyrids in general forage over or in soft substrate for small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and other benthic prey — probing the bottom and using their electric sense to locate food that is out of sight in dark, cluttered water.

What follows is inferred from the wider family rather than observed in this species: small mormyrids kept in aquaria typically take live and frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and other aquatic insect larvae over a fine, soft substrate they can probe naturally. There is no confirmation that Paramormyrops retrodorsalis follows this pattern in the wild, only that it is the expected pattern for a mormyrid of its size and habitat.

Mating

Courtship and spawning in Paramormyrops retrodorsalis have not been documented. Across the mormyrid family more broadly, the electric organ discharge is known to play a role in courtship and species recognition — fish can distinguish their own species, and potentially sex or individual quality, from EOD waveform alone — but the fine detail of how this translates into pairing and spawning behaviour is poorly known for the great majority of mormyrid species, including this one.

Wild mormyrids are generally thought to be seasonal spawners cued to the rainy season and the resulting rise in river and floodplain water levels. Whether Paramormyrops retrodorsalis follows this pattern has not been confirmed for its single known locality; the data are simply too sparse to say more.

Breeding

Paramormyrops retrodorsalis has never been bred in captivity, and general accounts of mormyrid husbandry note that captive breeding across the family as a whole has rarely if ever been achieved. No aquarium spawning of this species, or any close relative, appears to have been documented.

What little is inferred about mormyrid reproduction comes mostly from field observation of other species: seasonal, rainy-season-triggered spawning, with the EOD apparently involved in courtship, and some species thought to scatter or deposit eggs among vegetation with limited parental guarding. None of this has been specifically confirmed for Paramormyrops retrodorsalis, and no aquarium breeding protocol exists for it.

In the aquarium

Paramormyrops retrodorsalis has no known presence in the aquarium hobby — it is not a species aquarists are likely to encounter or be able to source, having been reported from a single small forest brook and never described as an exported ornamental fish. The notes here draw on general care practice for small African mormyrids rather than any species-specific experience.

At a modest maximum size of roughly 4.5 in SL it would not present the size trap of larger elephantnoses, but it would share their other needs if ever kept: dim lighting, since mormyrids are sensitive to bright illumination; a soft, fine substrate for natural foraging and probing; and soft, tannin-stained water reflecting its forest-brook origin. Mormyrids as a family are notably sensitive to poor water quality and to many common medications — copper-based treatments in particular should be avoided or used with great caution — and can be territorial toward their own and other electric fish species. FishBase records no CITES listing for this species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Paramormyrops retrodorsalis as Data Deficient, an assessment dated 16 February 2009 with no subsequent reassessment reported. This reflects the general state of knowledge for a fish known from a single small forest brook rather than any specific evidence of decline — the species may be secure, rare, or somewhere in between, and the honest answer is that not enough is known to say.

No species-specific threats have been documented, and there is no CITES listing. A species restricted to one known stream is inherently vulnerable to local habitat disturbance — deforestation, water pollution or changes to the brook itself — but without population data or a documented threat, any statement about its conservation trajectory beyond "data deficient" would be speculation.
