Taxonomy & naming
Paramormyrops jacksoni was described in 1967 by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll, a prolific describer of African mormyrids and other freshwater fishes. The parenthetical authority indicates the species was originally placed in a different genus before later being moved to Paramormyrops; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Paramormyrops jacksoni as the currently valid name.
The genus Paramormyrops sits in the family Mormyridae, the elephantnose fishes and their relatives, itself part of the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — a deep-time radiation of freshwater fishes found today in Africa, South America, Southeast Asia and Australasia, united by a bony, toothed structure on the tongue rather than by shared appearance. Mormyridae is exclusively African and is best known for its weakly electric species. The species epithet jacksoni honours Peter Brian Neville Jackson (1923–2007), a South African ichthyologist who worked extensively on the fishes of the Zambezi and other southern African river systems.
Morphology
Paramormyrops jacksoni is a small, laterally compressed mormyrid reaching a maximum recorded total length of about 2 in, making it one of the smallest members of a family that includes species over 5 ft long. FishBase records 18 dorsal soft rays and 23 anal soft rays, fin counts used alongside body proportions to separate it from the many superficially similar small mormyrids that share the same rivers.
As in all mormyrids, the body carries small cycloid scales (unlike the naked skin of most African catfishes), a small mouth set low on the head, and dorsal and anal fins set well back toward a deeply forked tail. The diagnostic family feature is internal: an electric organ in the caudal peduncle, near the base of the tail, that fires a brief, species-specific pulse used for electrolocation and communication. Mormyrids as a group also carry an unusually large, folded cerebellum relative to body size, among the highest brain-to-body ratios of any fish, an adaptation for processing the constant stream of electrosensory information.
Habitat
The species is known from the Longa River in the upper Zambezi basin of Angola, with an unconfirmed additional report from the upper Zambezi in Namibia. Data on its precise range are sparse, consistent with its Data Deficient status: it may be a narrow endemic of a single river system, or simply under-recorded across a wider stretch of the upper Zambezi drainage.
The upper Zambezi basin is a warm, seasonally flooding system of main channel, backwaters and floodplain, typically soft and only mildly acidic to neutral, often stained by decaying leaf litter and low in visibility — the kind of dim, structurally complex water in which an electric sense is more useful than eyesight. Specific temperature and chemistry readings for this species have not been published; general parameters for small Zambezi-basin mormyrids point to warm water in the mid-to-high 20s °C with soft to moderately hard, near-neutral chemistry.
Feeding
Like other small mormyrids, Paramormyrops jacksoni is presumed to be a benthic invertebrate feeder, picking small insect larvae, worms and other invertebrates out of sand and detritus. Detailed dietary studies specific to this species have not been published, so this account follows what is documented for the genus and family generally rather than direct observation of P. jacksoni.
Mormyrids forage mainly at night, using electrolocation to detect prey buried in the substrate before the fish makes visual or tactile contact with it. In captivity, related small mormyrids take live and frozen foods of an appropriate size — mosquito larvae, bloodworm, Tubifex and small crustaceans such as Daphnia and Cyclops — offered after the lights go out.
Mating
Courtship and species recognition in mormyrids run substantially through the electric organ discharge: each species produces a characteristically shaped, timed pulse, and fish are thought to use differences in that signal to identify and assess potential mates and rivals, alongside more conventional visual and chemical cues. The details of this process have not been documented for Paramormyrops jacksoni specifically.
Across the mormyrid family more broadly, breeding is understood to be seasonal and tied to the rains and river flooding that characterise African wet-dry climates, with spawning triggered by rising water levels rather than occurring year-round. Nothing specific to this species' mating behaviour has been published, and the general biology of small Paramormyrops in the wild remains poorly studied.
Breeding
Paramormyrops jacksoni has essentially not been bred in captivity, and its wild breeding biology is poorly known — this is typical of mormyrids generally, only a small handful of which have ever been spawned by aquarists. What is understood for the family points to seasonal, flood-triggered spawning in the wild, with some mormyrids thought to scatter eggs among vegetation or in sheltered margins, though direct observations are scarce even for well-studied genera.
No published account describes parental care, egg development time or fry-rearing for this species. Given its Data Deficient status and narrow known range, any aquarium breeding would be a novel event worth documenting rather than a repeatable, established method.
In the aquarium
This species is essentially absent from the aquarium trade. Its very small adult size (around 2 in), its DD status, and its narrow, poorly documented range in a single upper Zambezi tributary mean it is not exported or bred commercially in any numbers, unlike larger, better-known mormyrids such as the elephantnose (Gnathonemus petersii). Anyone encountering it would almost certainly be dealing with a misidentified small mormyrid rather than the genuine species.
General mormyrid husbandry, drawn from related and better-documented species, still applies as a starting point should the genuine fish ever appear: soft, slightly acidic to neutral, warm water in a heavily planted tank with a soft sandy substrate for foraging, subdued lighting, and shelter such as a hollow log or pipe for daytime cover. Mormyrids as a group are notably sensitive to poor water quality and to some medications, and because most are scaled but nonetheless delicate, treatments should be conservative and well researched before use. Given the total absence of specific husbandry data for P. jacksoni, any attempt at keeping it should proceed cautiously and be treated as experimental.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Paramormyrops jacksoni as Data Deficient, an assessment last carried out in 2007. This reflects a genuine gap in knowledge — the species' true range, population size and trend have not been adequately surveyed — rather than any confirmed decline.
Because the known range is centred on the Longa River in Angola's portion of the upper Zambezi basin, with only an unconfirmed record from Namibia, the species' status is tied to the health of that river system. No specific threats have been documented for it, and no targeted conservation measures are in place; further field surveys would be needed before its status could be reassessed with confidence.
