Taxonomy & naming
Paramormyrops ntotom was described in 2017 by Rich, Sullivan and Hopkins in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society. It belongs to the family Mormyridae — the elephantnoses and mormyrids — within Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongue fishes, one of the oldest surviving lineages of teleosts, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against a pad on the roof of the mouth. The genus Paramormyrops sits within this family alongside relatives such as Mormyrops.
The species resolved a taxonomic puzzle that had stood for roughly 140 years: specimens now recognized as P. ntotom had long been lumped together with the similar Paramormyrops sphekodes. Researchers at Cornell separated the two using anatomical measurements, molecular genetics, and differences in electric organ discharge (EOD) — the species-specific electrical signal these fish generate from an organ near the base of the tail. The type locality is the Ogooué (Ogowe) River near the village of Doumé in Gabon; the type series was collected in 2011 and 2014.
The epithet ntotom comes from the Fang language of Gabon, where it is a general word for mormyrid fish. The describers borrowed a local name for these electric fish rather than coining a new Latin or Greek term.
Morphology
Like other members of its genus, Paramormyrops ntotom is a small mormyrid with an elongated, laterally compressed body and a weakly electric organ near the base of the tail. FishBase reports a maximum size of 7.2 in standard length, a modest size within a family whose members range from a few centimetres to well over a metre.
P. ntotom is what ichthyologists call a cryptic species — very difficult to separate from its close relative P. sphekodes on external appearance alone. The two were only teased apart through fine anatomical measurements and by comparing electric organ discharge waveforms; each mormyrid species produces its own signature electrical pulse, and that signal, not the fish's outward look, is often the more reliable character. Beyond the confirmed maximum size and its status as a distinct electropherotype, detailed morphological description for this species is sparse in the available literature.
Habitat
Paramormyrops ntotom is known only from the Ogooué River basin in Gabon, Central Africa, collected in the vicinity of Doumé village. FishBase classifies it as a freshwater, benthopelagic species, living and foraging near the riverbed rather than in open water.
No species-specific water chemistry has been published for P. ntotom. Like most Mormyridae of the Congolian and Gabonese lowland rivers, it almost certainly inhabits warm, soft, tannin-stained water with low visibility — the kind of environment in which the electric sense this family relies on for navigation and prey detection matters most. Precise temperature and pH figures for this particular species are not available; the ranges recorded in the facts panel are typical for the Ogooué basin rather than direct measurements of this species.
Feeding
Direct dietary studies of P. ntotom have not been published. FishBase lists an estimated trophic level of 3.2±0.3, consistent with an omnivorous to insectivorous diet — a level typical of mormyrids that take small aquatic invertebrates rather than fish or heavy plant matter.
Mormyrids as a family forage mainly after dark, using their electric organ to electrolocate: sensing nearby objects and prey by detecting distortions in a weak electric field they generate themselves, which lets them find buried or hidden invertebrates in murky water where vision is of little use. P. ntotom almost certainly feeds this way, probing sediment and cover for insect larvae, worms, and small crustaceans, though this has not been directly documented for the species.
Mating
Nothing specific to P. ntotom has been published on courtship or spawning behavior; the 2017 description that established the species did not address breeding biology. Mormyrids in general are believed to be seasonal spawners cued to the flood pulse of their home rivers, and the electric organ discharge that identifies each species is also thought to play a role in mate recognition and courtship — a fish can, in principle, judge a prospective partner's species and identity from its electrical signature before it can be seen clearly in dark water. The specifics of that process for this species are unknown.
Breeding
Breeding biology for Paramormyrops ntotom is essentially undocumented. The species has not been reported in the aquarium trade, and mormyrids as a family are notoriously difficult to spawn in captivity — successful captive breeding is rare across the genus and family as a whole, let alone for a species only described in 2017. Wild mormyrids are thought to be seasonal, flood-triggered spawners, and some species are believed to guard eggs among vegetation, but the details for P. ntotom specifically have not been studied.
Parental care, egg description, incubation time, and fry development are all unrecorded for this species. Any breeding claim encountered under this name in a hobbyist context should be treated with skepticism until it can be traced to a documented source.
In the aquarium
Paramormyrops ntotom has no established presence in the aquarium hobby. It was described from a small number of scientific specimens collected in a remote stretch of the Ogooué River, and none of the sources consulted here mention it being collected for or offered in the trade. Any fish sold under this name should be treated with caution, given how recently — and narrowly — the species was defined against its cryptic sister species.
General mormyrid husbandry, inferred from better-known relatives rather than from this species directly, calls for soft, dimly lit water with plenty of cover such as driftwood, roots, or PVC tubes, a fine sand substrate the fish can probe without injuring its sensitive skin, and stable, uncrowded conditions — mormyrids are sensitive to poor water quality and to many common medications, and unrelated individuals of the same species can be aggressive toward each other in a confined tank. None of this is confirmed care information for P. ntotom specifically; it is a general starting point drawn from the wider family, offered because no species-specific husbandry data exists.
Conservation
Paramormyrops ntotom has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; FishBase lists it as Not Evaluated. This is unsurprising for a species described only in 2017 from a limited number of specimens collected in a remote section of the Ogooué River in Gabon — population size, range extent, and threats facing the species are effectively unknown.
Its congener P. sphekodes, from which it was only recently separated, and the wider Ogooué basin fauna face the general pressures common to Central African rivers: habitat alteration, sedimentation, and the cumulative effects of logging and development in the watershed. Without a dedicated assessment, any statement about P. ntotom's specific conservation status beyond "data deficient in practice" would be speculation.
