Taxonomy & naming
Paramormyrops longicaudatus was described in 1977 by Léon Taverne, Dirk Thys van den Audenaerde, Adelheid Heymer and Jacques Géry. The parenthetical form of the authority citation records that the species was originally placed in a different genus before later being moved into Paramormyrops, the standard convention in ichthyological nomenclature. It belongs to the family Mormyridae, the elephantfishes, within Osteoglossiformes.
The genus name Paramormyrops combines the Greek prefix para-, "beside" or "near", with Mormyrops, itself an older mormyrid genus name built from mormyros (a Greek name for an unrelated marine fish, borrowed for these African forms) and ops, "face" or "appearance" — together signalling a genus considered close to Mormyrops in form. The species epithet longicaudatus is Latin, from longus, "long", and cauda, "tail", giving "long-tailed" — the basis of the common name longtailed mormyrid.
Paramormyrops is a genus of small West and Central African weakly electric fish whose species are notoriously difficult to tell apart by external anatomy alone; many are reliably distinguished only by the waveform of their species-specific electric organ discharge (EOD). Morphology
Paramormyrops longicaudatus has the slender, elongate body typical of many mormyrids, with a distinctly V-shaped snout profile.
