Taxonomy & naming
Paramormyrops sphekodes was described by the French ichthyologist Henri-Émile Sauvage in 1879, based on material from the upper Ogooué River near Doumé, Gabon. It belongs to the family Mormyridae, the weakly electric elephantfishes of Africa, within the order Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, an ancient teleost lineage named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against a matching plate on the roof of the mouth. Mormyrids are among the oldest surviving branches of that order, and the family is entirely African and entirely freshwater.
The genus name Paramormyrops means, literally, "near Mormyrops" — the Greek prefix para- (beside, near) attached to Mormyrops, an older mormyrid genus name built from mormyros, a fish name used loosely by early naturalists, and ops, face or appearance. The species name sphekodes comes from the Greek spheka, wasp, referring to the fish's elongate, slender body.
After its original description the species was not recorded again at its Ogooué type locality for more than a century. It was rediscovered between 2011 and 2014 through a combination of morphometric comparison, DNA sequencing and analysis of its electric organ discharge, the species-specific electrical signal mormyrids use to tell one another apart — the same tool that let researchers confirm the population's identity where body shape alone was not conclusive.
Morphology
Paramormyrops sphekodes is a small mormyrid. The largest known specimen measures 6 in total length, with most examined individuals closer to 4.5 in standard length. The body is elongate and slender for the family — the feature behind its wasp-referencing species name — with the laterally compressed profile, small mouth and short-based fins typical of Mormyridae.
Like other mormyrids, it carries a weak electric organ near the base of the tail that produces a continuous stream of brief electrical pulses. Those pulses build an electrical picture of the surrounding water — obstacles, prey, other fish — in place of vision, which is of limited use in the dark, sediment-laden rivers mormyrids inhabit. Mature males show a modified anal fin: a notched base and thickened anterior rays, a pattern documented in this species and shared with a number of other mormyrids, generally understood to be tied to the electric-signalling anatomy used in courtship and species recognition rather than to any function in swimming.
Habitat
The species is known from the upper Ogooué River system in Gabon, where it was originally collected near Doumé and where the 2011–2014 rediscovery survey confirmed the population persists. Some range compilations extend the species across the wider Ogooué basin into neighbouring Cameroon and the Republic of the Congo, but the confirmed, modern record is the narrower upper Ogooué population in Gabon, and the IUCN assessment treats the species as possibly restricted to that area.
It occupies rocky cataracts and rapids within the river system rather than the slow, still backwaters some mormyrids prefer — fast, well-oxygenated water over a rock and rubble bed. Field measurements taken during the rediscovery survey put the water temperature between about 19 and 88 °F, averaging around 78 °F, a wide seasonal range typical of a tropical river subject to flood and dry-season extremes. As in the rest of its family, this is dim, tannin-coloured water where electrolocation, not eyesight, does most of the navigating.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Paramormyrops sphekodes appears to exist, and gut-content data for the species is not documented. What can be said follows from the wider biology of Mormyridae, to which the species conforms in build and habitat.
Mormyrids are nocturnal, bottom-oriented foragers. They move slowly over the riverbed after dark, using their weak electric field to locate aquatic insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and other invertebrates hidden in sediment or wedged among rocks, taking them one at a time rather than grazing or filter-feeding in bulk. Given its rocky, fast-water habitat, P. sphekodes most likely forages the same way, picking invertebrates from crevices in the cataract substrate.
Mating
Courtship and spawning in Paramormyrops sphekodes have not been documented, in the field or in captivity; the literature that re-established the species focused on identification, not reproduction. What can be said follows the pattern known across Mormyridae.
Mormyrids use their electric organ discharge for more than navigation — the pulse pattern is species-specific and, in many mormyrids, differs between the sexes, and is thought to play a part in courtship as well as in territorial and species recognition. The anal-fin dimorphism documented in male P. sphekodes, close to the genital region, is consistent with a role in that signalling system, though the mechanism has not been studied directly in this species. Spawning behaviour, timing and any courtship display remain unrecorded.
Breeding
Paramormyrops sphekodes has not been bred in captivity, and even its wild breeding biology is essentially undescribed — the species was effectively unknown to science between its 1879 description and its rediscovery in the early 2010s, leaving no real window in which anyone could have observed it spawning.
What little can be inferred follows the general pattern documented in better-studied mormyrids: seasonal, flood-associated spawning tied to rains that raise river levels and open up floodplain and marginal habitat, with eggs laid among submerged vegetation or roots rather than in a defended nest. Parental care across the family ranges from none to some limited guarding, and it is not known which pattern, if either, applies here. Mormyrids as a group are difficult to breed in aquaria and are rarely spawned by hobbyists even when the species is well established in the trade; nothing suggests P. sphekodes would be an exception, and in any case it is not kept.
In the aquarium
Paramormyrops sphekodes is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It is a narrow-range river endemic that went unrecorded for well over a hundred years and was returned to scientific attention only through a targeted rediscovery survey; it does not appear in the ornamental trade, and there is no husbandry record to draw on.
The general principles that apply to small mormyrids in captivity would apply if the species were ever kept: soft, dim, tannin-stained water rather than bright, hard, clear water; a fine sand substrate the fish can probe with its electric sense; plenty of cover such as driftwood roots and leaf litter; and stable, high water quality, since mormyrids as a family tolerate poor conditions and many medications badly. Many mormyrids are also aggressive toward their own kind and are usually kept singly or in carefully matched groups, though nothing specific to this species' temperament has been recorded.
Anyone encountering fish sold under this name should treat the identification with real skepticism — mormyrid species are notoriously difficult to tell apart by eye and are properly confirmed only by their electric organ discharge, the same method needed to re-identify the wild population in the first place.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Paramormyrops sphekodes as Least Concern, most recently in 2022.
The assessment reflects a narrow-range but apparently persisting population within the upper Ogooué system rather than any broad, well-surveyed distribution — this is a fish that went unseen by scientists for over a century after its original description, rediscovered only through a dedicated 2011–2014 survey effort. That gap says as much about how little the upper Ogooué's fish fauna has been surveyed as it does about the species itself. No threats specific to P. sphekodes have been documented, but as with any narrow river endemic, habitat change within its limited known range — damming, sedimentation, deforestation-driven runoff — would be the relevant long-term risk.
