Taxonomy & naming
Paramormyrops hopkinsi was described in 1985 by the Belgian ichthyologists Léon Taverne and Dirk Thys van den Audenaerde, originally as Brienomyrus hopkinsi. It was transferred to the genus Paramormyrops in 2007, part of a wider revision that separated several species out of Brienomyrus and related mormyrid genera. It belongs to the family Mormyridae — the elephantnoses and mormyrids — within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongue fishes, a lineage among the oldest living branches of the teleost fish tree, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against a matching pad on the roof of the mouth.
The species epithet honors Carl D. Hopkins, a Cornell University biologist whose research on the electric-organ discharges of Central African mormyrids helped establish how these fish use electricity to recognise their own species and communicate. The common name Ivindo electric fish reflects the Ivindo River, the Gabonese tributary of the Ogooué where the species was first collected. Many Paramormyrops species look nearly identical to one another and to related genera, and ichthyologists increasingly rely on the shape of each species' electric pulse, rather than external appearance alone, to tell them apart.
Morphology
Paramormyrops hopkinsi is a modestly sized mormyrid, reaching about 6.1 in in length (FishBase records this as standard length, measured from the snout to the base of the tail). It has the compact, laterally compressed body typical of the genus, with a small mouth, small eyes, and a short-based dorsal fin set well back over a longer anal fin. The body is a uniform dark chocolate-brown, without the bold spotting or barring some other African mormyrids show.
Like all mormyrids, it carries a weak electric organ near the base of the tail, built from modified muscle tissue, alongside an unusually enlarged cerebellum that processes the constant stream of electrosensory information the organ generates — a feature that gives mormyrids as a family one of the highest brain-to-body-mass ratios of any fish. In P. hopkinsi the discharge is a brief double pulse, head-positive then head-negative, lasting only about 2.8 to 2.96 milliseconds. That exact waveform, more than any external marking, is what separates it from other, similar-looking mormyrids sharing the same rivers.
Habitat
The species is known from two West-Central African drainages: the Ivindo River basin in Gabon, part of the larger Ogooué River system, and the Ntem River basin along the Cameroon–Gabon border. Both are lowland tropical rainforest rivers, and P. hopkinsi is described as benthopelagic — living near the bottom over soft sediment rather than in open water or among rocks.
Specific water-chemistry readings for the species have not been published, but the Ivindo and Ntem systems run soft and warm under closed-canopy rainforest, often stained the colour of tea by tannins washed from leaf litter — conditions that favour electrolocation over eyesight in dim or turbid light. Aquarists working with related Central African mormyrids generally aim for water around 75–82 °F, soft and on the acidic-to-neutral side, as a reasonable stand-in for the species' home water.
Feeding
Paramormyrops hopkinsi is an omnivore with a trophic level of about 3.2, consistent with a diet that mixes animal and plant material rather than one built purely on live prey. In the wild it most likely forages over the sediment for aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, supplementing this with some plant and detrital matter — the general pattern reported for benthopelagic mormyrids of similar size.
Mormyrids as a family hunt largely by electrolocation, reading the small distortions their own electric field produces as it passes over prey buried in sediment or hidden among debris, which lets them feed effectively at night or in water too dark or turbid for vision to help much. Feeding behaviour specific to P. hopkinsi has not been documented in detail; captive care notes for the species are sparse.
Mating
Very little has been published on the wild reproductive behaviour of Paramormyrops hopkinsi specifically. Across the Mormyridae, however, the electric-organ discharge is known to carry a courtship function: because the pulse waveform is species-specific, and in many mormyrids differs between males and females, fish appear to use it to recognise potential mates and to signal readiness to spawn in water too dark or turbid for visual courtship.
Spawning in wild mormyrids is generally tied to the seasonal rise and fall of river levels, with courtship and egg-laying triggered by flooding rather than occurring year-round. Nothing more specific — pairing behaviour, courtship displays, or spawning sites — has been documented for this species, and it should be treated as unknown rather than assumed.
Breeding
Paramormyrops hopkinsi is essentially unbred in the aquarium hobby, and mormyrid reproduction in general remains poorly understood even among the handful of species kept regularly. Wild spawning is thought to be seasonal and flood-triggered, coinciding with the rains that expand river habitat, but the details — nest sites, egg number, incubation time — have not been worked out for this species.
Some other mormyrids are believed to scatter or guard eggs among aquatic plants and flooded vegetation, but whether P. hopkinsi does the same has not been confirmed. No reliable captive-breeding protocol exists for this species; anyone keeping it should not expect to reproduce it and should treat any successful spawning as noteworthy rather than routine.
In the aquarium
This species rarely if ever appears in the aquarium trade, and published husbandry experience is limited. What guidance exists follows general mormyrid care: dim lighting, a soft sand or fine-gravel substrate the fish can probe with its electric sense, and ample cover from driftwood, roots and plants so a naturally shy, largely nocturnal fish has somewhere to retreat during the day.
Mormyrids as a group are sensitive to poor water quality and to some medications, and they can be aggressive toward their own kind or toward other electric fish sharing a tank, so anyone considering the species should research compatibility carefully rather than assume a peaceful community fit. At roughly 5.9 in, P. hopkinsi is a manageable size for a dedicated species tank, but the near-total absence of captive-care records means keeping it means working from general mormyrid husbandry rather than data specific to this fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Paramormyrops hopkinsi as Vulnerable, an assessment dated February 2009. The listing reflects a naturally restricted range — the species is known only from the Ivindo and Ntem river basins — combined with the general pressures facing West-Central African rainforest rivers, including logging, mining and small-scale habitat disturbance in the region.
The assessment describes the population's resilience as medium, with a doubling time of roughly 1.4 to 4.4 years, and rates its vulnerability to fishing pressure as low; it is not a species targeted by fisheries. Its conservation outlook is tied mainly to the health of the Ivindo and Ntem catchments rather than to direct exploitation, and no population trend beyond the original assessment has been published.
