Taxonomy & naming
Chen and Lai described the species in 2024 from the Chenglong wetland in Yulin (Yunlin) County, Taiwan. It is one of several recently described Taiwanese medaka.
Morphology
A small medaka; FishBase gives a maximum of 1 in SL.
Habitat
A coastal wetland in western Taiwan; the name refers to the type locality. FishBase says it was collected from brackish habitat at a salinity of roughly 20 to 30, and that the other recorded localities are also brackish wetlands and estuaries. In breeding experiments it survived well in fresh water, so it may live more widely in lowland fresh to brackish water around Taiwan.
