Ricefish · names

Every name, resolved

A ricefish is known by a current scientific binomial under the Catalog of Fishes and, for some species, by an English common name such as “Japanese medaka” or “Daisy’s ricefish”. Many of the family’s species were described only in the last two decades, mostly from Sulawesi, and many have no settled English name at all. This index cross-references both layers, the 46 scientific names and 33 common names, and resolves each one to its species page.

Scientific name — the valid binomial under the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names. Common name — the established English names for the species, including the names the hobby uses (the “Daisy’s ricefish” of the aquarium trade is Oryzias woworae). Each entry is tagged with its regional group. Note that “medaka” is the Japanese name for the East Asian species of Oryzias, while “ricefish” is used for the family as a whole.
