Taxonomy & naming
Sven O. Kullander described Apistogramma iniridae in 1979, in a Zoologica Scripta paper (8(1): 69–79) that revised the Apistogramma of the Orinoco drainage and introduced four new species at once — alongside Apistogramma hongsloi, Apistogramma macmasteri, and Apistogramma viejita. The holotype (NRM 11224) is held at the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm, with paratypes split between that collection and the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (IRSNB 15.223). The type locality is Pueblo Bretania (Yuri Bajo), on the Caño (Río) Bocón in Guainía, Colombia, at roughly 3°39'N, 68°05'W. The epithet is a toponym for the Río Inírida, the region's principal river and the source of the type material; the genus name pairs the Greek apisto ('uncertain') with gramma ('line' or 'mark'), a nod to the variably developed, often interrupted lateral line that made early dwarf cichlids so hard to place.
Apistogramma iniridae is the type species of the informal 'iniridae group,' a cluster of slender, tall-finned blackwater species that also includes its close look-alike Apistogramma uaupesi. It sits in the subfamily Geophaginae (tribe Geophagini), the South American earth-eater radiation, and carries the codes A159–A160 in the DATZ/Mergus trade numbering. Because wild imports are routinely mislabeled, the same fish has reached hobbyists under the names of unrelated congeners such as Apistogramma hongsloi — a confusion that Apistogramma specialists regularly untangle from photographs.
Morphology
Apistogramma iniridae is small even by dwarf-cichlid standards, and its reported size depends on how length is measured. Kullander's type material tops out around 1.5 in standard length (SL); counting the tail, and the larger females aquarists record, commonly cited maxima reach about 3 in total length, while importers describe wild adults of 3 in. Males run consistently 1 in larger than females. The body is slender and laterally compressed, the head pointed.
The ground color is an unassuming gray-brown, so the markings do the identifying: a wide dark band runs from the eye to the base of the tail, and beneath it sits a row of dark abdominal blotches whose number and shape vary from population to population. Males light up where it counts — the face and gill covers flush iridescent blue and green, and the tall dorsal fin lifts like a sail in display. Their caudal fin is rounded to slightly oval, not the lyre-shaped tail of the otherwise similar Apistogramma uaupesi, which is the quickest way to separate the two. Ad Konings, writing earlier in the Cichlids Yearbook, instead singled out Apistogramma pertensis and Apistogramma meinkeni as the species' closest look-alikes, on a different mark entirely: the dark longitudinal stripe of A. iniridae runs unbroken from behind the eye all the way onto the caudal peduncle, while pertensis and meinkeni carry a separate black spot on the peduncle and their stripe stops short of it. We note this alongside the uaupesi comparison rather than in place of it, since the two accounts draw on different diagnostic characters and it isn't clear from the excerpt whether they were meant to describe the same set of relatives. A further mark not always mentioned in modern accounts: a set of black bars crosses the lower half of the body, but only when the fish is excited or stressed — and when those bars are strongly expressed, the horizontal stripe fades almost to invisibility. Color is otherwise strikingly plastic in this species: orange-finned and bluish fish can turn up side by side in one stream rather than marking separate populations, and Heiko Bleher reported two or three color patterns within a single habitat. Females are smaller and plainer, with a lower dorsal fin, shorter ventral fins, and rounded rather than drawn-out soft-ray tips; in breeding dress they take on the bright yellow-and-black of brooding Apistogramma females.
Habitat
Apistogramma iniridae is endemic to the upper Orinoco basin in Colombia — the middle and lower Río Inírida and the left bank of the lower Río Atabapo, with further reports from the headwaters of the Río Guaviare. The IUCN puts its extent of occurrence at about 11,62 mi² and its area of occupancy near 6,62 mi²: a real but tightly bounded range along the seam where the Orinoco and Amazon (Río Negro) drainages braid together at the 'Fluvial Star of Inírida.' Catalog of Fishes lists the species from both the Amazon and Orinoco basins of Colombia, reflecting that watershed seam, and museum records also fall along the Venezuelan side of the Atabapo border, though the validated, assessed native range is Colombian.
Its world is blackwater — slow, tea-colored creeks (caños) shaded by overhanging rainforest, their sandy bottoms blanketed in leaf litter, branches, and submerged roots, with essentially no rooted aquatic plants. The water is extraordinarily soft, acidic, and shallow; these are marginal, knee-deep stretches of small streams, so the fish keeps to roughly the top metre or two of the column. Field data compiled in the IUCN assessment give a conductivity around 5 µS/cm and pH below 4.6 (Mesa & Lasso 2011), while collectors sampling specific caños have logged pH from about 4.8 to 5.9, conductivity of 14–26 µS/cm, and temperatures of 82–87 °F (82–87 °F); FishBase's broader envelope runs 73–88 °F. A specific reading from one collection site, Caño Aquijón — where three Danish aquarists collected the species in spring 1991 after it had been unobtainable for years — recorded pH 5.3, unmeasurable total hardness, 4° carbonate hardness, conductivity of 10 µS/cm, and a temperature of 86 °F, sitting comfortably within that broader envelope. This is among the most extreme soft, ion-poor water any commonly kept cichlid inhabits, and it shapes nearly everything about keeping the fish.
Feeding
Like most Apistogramma, Apistogramma iniridae is a benthic micro-predator of the leaf-litter zone. No direct gut-content study exists, but FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.3, and the IUCN account infers — by analogy with better-studied relatives — that it is carnivorous and largely insectivorous, gleaning small invertebrates, insect larvae, and crustaceans from the sand and detritus. In the wild it shares its caños with other small blackwater specialists — pencilfishes, cardinal tetras, checkerboard cichlids (Dicrossus), and dwarf pike cichlids — taking the bottom stratum of a community built around fallen wood and decaying leaves rather than living plants.
It behaves as a tiny, territorial bottom forager rather than an open-water hunter. The same low-conductivity, nutrient-poor water that defines the habitat also keeps prey scarce, which suits a fish that defends small patches of structure and eats opportunistically whatever the litter delivers. In captivity that makes for an eager, undemanding eater: it takes live and frozen foods readily and can be weaned onto prepared diets with patience.
Mating
Apistogramma iniridae follows the usual Apistogramma pattern of harem polygyny: a dominant male holds a larger territory that overlaps the smaller territories of one or more females. Pairing turns on the male's display, and keepers single out his courting dorsal fin — raised to nearly twice its resting height — as the species' signature spectacle. A female ripening to spawn flushes bright yellow and claims a cave or crevice, though in the last days before spawning she may instead turn conspicuously drab, a quirk experienced breeders learn to read.
Day to day the fish is not especially belligerent — keepers rate it comparatively peaceful for an Apistogramma — but reproduction reorganizes the social order around the female-held caves, and a brooding female becomes strikingly aggressive. Importers and breeders note she can turn hard on the male during brood care, sometimes driving him into a corner where he stops feeding, so a layout with cover and escape routes matters, as does the option to remove the male after spawning in a single-pair tank.
Breeding
Apistogramma iniridae is a cave spawner with maternal brood care. The female attaches her clutch to the ceiling of a cave or crevice with a thin thread — reported clutch sizes cluster around 80–130 eggs (FishBase cites 80–120 deposited at the cave ceiling; Linke & Staeck and the IUCN account give roughly 130) — then tends and defends the eggs, which hatch in about three days, and the free-swimming fry, while the male is not welcome to join in brood care and is kept to the wider territory. Danish breeders working with the species reported considerably more variable outcomes at the fry-count stage than the egg counts above suggest, with successful spawns ranging from as few as 15 to as many as 197 surviving fry. The fry take baby brine shrimp and microworms from the start and grow at a respectable clip; one keeper logged young at about 0.5 in after a month and nearly 1 in by two months, though they are reported to be slightly more delicate than other Apistogramma fry until they pass two or three months.
The real catch is reproduction itself: Apistogramma iniridae is widely regarded as one of the hardest Apistogramma to breed. A settled pair may spawn within days, but the eggs and fry typically survive only in extremely acidic water. Multiple keepers report fry simply failing to develop above a certain pH; the breeder behind dwarfcichlid.com recounts a wild strain that produced no viable young until the pH was dropped to around 3.5, after which the fry raised normally once the water was gradually brought back up toward 5.0. The opposite case is documented on the apistogramma.com forum, where a pair kept and spawned in hard tap water (pH 7.4, ~250 ppm TDS) produced only dead eggs. Successful aquarium spawnings instead pair very soft water — conductivity of roughly 25–75 µS/cm — with low pH and a rich live-food diet.
In the aquarium
Apistogramma iniridae is rarely seen in the hobby. Wild imports from the Inírida region arrive sporadically and command high prices — exporting fish from one of Colombia's more remote departments is hard — and captive-bred stock is not abundant, so most specimens are wild-caught. Between that scarcity and its notorious demands, treat it as a specialist's project rather than a first dwarf cichlid.
Water is the whole game, and there is no shortcut. For maintenance, a keeper can hold soft, low-mineral water around pH 5.0–6.0 with conductivity under roughly 50–75 µS/cm; for breeding, those targets tighten to about pH 4.5–5.5 and conductivity below 30 µS/cm. Build it on reverse-osmosis or deionized water, acidify with a peat filter or Indian almond (catappa) leaf extract rather than chemical buffers, and run frequent small changes with remineralized soft water — even reasonably soft tap water is enough to stop spawns from yielding viable fry. Keep the temperature high, 79–86 °F (82–86 °F).
The footprint can be modest, but layout matters more than volume. A single pair suits about 15–20 US gal (a 60 × 12 in base or larger); a harem of one male and two or three females wants 20–30 US gal, so each female can hold a territory behind a sight-break — Konings recommends allowing each female a bottom area of about 8–12 in in diameter around her chosen cave in a breeding setup. Use fine silica sand — this is a constant bottom-sifter, and coarse gravel or bare glass will not do — then add dried leaves, coconut shells, clay half-pots, or small caves as spawning sites, one per female and screened so rivals cannot see each other. Driftwood and roots break up sightlines, subdued lighting fits, and the tannins from leaves and peat are functional rather than decorative: they pull down the pH and conductivity the fish needs. Rooted plants are nearly absent in the wild, though low-light Anubias or acid-tolerant floaters are optional.
For tankmates, choose species that share the chemistry: cardinal tetras (Paracheirodon axelrodi), pencilfish (Nannostomus spp.), and checkerboard cichlids (Dicrossus filamentosus) are the classic dither fish, settling the cichlids and working the upper water while the Apistogramma keeps the bottom. Avoid larger or aggressive cichlids, and anything that needs neutral or hard water. The honest difficulty is high — not because the fish is fragile, but because the chemistry is uncompromising and the spawning margin is narrow. A keeper who already runs a soft, acidic system for chocolate gouramis, wild betta relatives, or cardinal-tetra biotopes will find upkeep manageable; anyone used to harder-water dwarf cichlids such as Bolivian rams, or most other apistos, should plan to invest in water treatment first.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma iniridae as Vulnerable (VU, criterion B1ab(iii,v)), assessed on 1 August 2020 and published in 2022 (assessor L. Mesa-Salazar; reviewer D.C. Taphorn). The listing rests on a restricted range — an extent of occurrence of about 11,62 mi² confined to the Inírida and lower Atabapo basins and resolved into roughly five threat-defined locations — together with a continuing decline in habitat quality and in the adult population. Two pressures drive that decline: illegal mineral mining (gold, plus tin, tantalum, and coltan), which degrades water quality across the catchment, and an established ornamental fishery that extracts wild adults for export. The species carries no CITES listing.
That Vulnerable status is unusual among Neotropical cichlids, most of which Kullander's own Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (2003) and the broader regional literature treat as wide-ranging and either Least Concern or Not Evaluated, facing diffuse habitat change rather than collapse. Apistogramma iniridae is the exception: it is threatened less by basin-wide overfishing than by a small range that overlaps exactly where mining and ornamental collection concentrate, around the regional capital of Puerto Inírida. Some protection exists — the 'Fluvial Star of Inírida,' declared a Ramsar wetland in 2014, covers the lower main course of the Inírida — but the assessment notes it leaves out many of the smaller tributary streams that matter most to both the trade and the mining frontier. The honest read is that the species is not on the brink, but its blackwater home is under real, specific strain, and a fish with so small a footprint has little margin if those pressures grow.
