Taxonomy & naming
Edward Drinker Cope described this fish as Acara syspilus in 1872, in his paper 'On the Fishes of the Ambyiacu River' (Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, volume 23, page 255, plate 11 figure 3). The type locality is the Río Ambyiacu — today usually spelled Ampiyacu — and its tributaries in the Peruvian Amazon, and the name is anchored by four syntypes held at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (ANSP 21430-33), catalogued by Böhlke in 1984. Over the following century the species was shuffled through several genera, passing as Astronotus (Acara) syspilus in Eigenmann & Eigenmann's 1891 revision and later residing in the catch-all genus Aequidens. Its modern placement dates to Sven Kullander's 1986 monograph on the cichlids of the Peruvian Amazon, where he erected the genus Bujurquina to hold roughly a dozen small, biparentally custodial, delayed-mouthbrooding acaras formerly lumped under Aequidens, and fixed Bujurquina syspilus as a valid combination. Catalog of Fishes and FishBase both follow this, and the name has been carried unchanged through subsequent treatments by Kullander (in Reis et al. 2003), Arbour & López-Fernández (2014), Říčan and colleagues, and others. Bujurquina sits in the subfamily Cichlinae, tribe Cichlasomatini — the 'true acaras' and their relatives — rather than among the eartheaters proper. Identification within the genus is genuinely difficult: Kullander's own work showed that several of his new species had long been confused with Bujurquina syspilus, and Paul Loiselle's 1990 key (Buntbarsche Bulletin 140) keys true syspilus on a single subtle feature — its dark lateral band running back only as far as the base of the soft dorsal fin, combined with a soft dorsal abundantly marked with light spots and a distinct suborbital stripe or preopercular spot.
Morphology
This is a small cichlid. The maximum recorded length is about 4 in standard length (the figure traces to Kullander's 1986 monograph via FishBase), making a fully grown adult a fish of roughly hand-palm size — modest even by dwarf-acara standards. The body is the typical Bujurquina shape: moderately deep, laterally compressed, with a gently sloping forehead and the rounded, slightly pointed snout of a fish that works among submerged litter. Coloration is understated — a brassy tan to olive ground, often with a faint sheen of blue-green on the cheeks and gill covers, and rows of small light spots picked out across the soft dorsal and tail. The defining mark is a dark lateral band running along the midflank; in syspilus it characteristically reaches only to the base of the soft dorsal fin rather than continuing onto the caudal peduncle, the feature Loiselle leaned on to separate it from look-alike congeners such as Bujurquina moriorum and Bujurquina huallagae. A suborbital stripe or a small preopercular blotch is usually present below the eye. Sexual dimorphism in Bujurquina is subtle and easiest to read at breeding time: males average a little larger and develop slightly more produced fins, while ripe females are noticeably rounder and deeper-bodied with the swollen abdomen of a fish carrying eggs. There is no dramatic difference in color between the sexes, which is part of why pairs are typically formed by letting a group sort itself out rather than by trying to sex individuals on sight.
Habitat
Bujurquina syspilus is a fish of the upper Amazon basin, recorded from Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. FishBase summarizes its Peruvian range as running from the Pacaya River basin in the Ucayali drainage to the lower Yavarí, while the IUCN assessment adds records from the Napo and Pastaza basins of Ecuador (including the Yasuní and Cuyabeno reserves) and from around Leticia in the Colombian Amazon. It is a lowland-to-foothill species, occurring at elevations from roughly 160 to 1,200 metres above sea level. Its preferred habitat is small, slow forest streams — clear-water creeks running down gentle slopes, with much-reduced flow and a bottom thick with fallen leaves and forest litter — and it is also found in associated still waters and floodplain lakes. The IUCN describes it as living in clear and white water, diurnal and non-migratory. In-situ chemistry has not been published in detail for this species; FishBase carries a tropical temperature preference of about 73–81 °F, a pH of up to about 7.0 (i.e. slightly acidic to neutral), and water of low to moderate hardness (up to roughly 15 dH), all consistent with the soft, warm, litter-stained streams it inhabits. No formal water-depth band has been recorded; the leaf-littered forest creeks and stream margins it favours are characteristically shallow, on the order of a metre or two — the depth value here should be read as a habitat-typical inference, not a measured range.
Feeding
Like most small acaras, Bujurquina syspilus is an opportunistic omnivore rather than a specialist. The IUCN assessment records it simply as having omnivorous, diurnal habits, and FishBase places it at an estimated trophic level near 3.5 — the band occupied by fish that take a mixed diet of small invertebrates supplemented by plant and detrital material. In its native leaf-litter streams the natural diet is almost certainly the standard fare of the habitat: aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other micro-invertebrates picked from the litter and substrate, along with the algae, biofilm and decaying plant matter that accumulate among submerged leaves. It is not a dedicated sand-sifting eartheater in the manner of Geophagus or Satanoperca — though Bujurquina sits within the broader eartheater radiation, it forages over and through litter rather than processing mouthfuls of sand. In the stream community it functions as a small mid-level insectivore-omnivore, abundant enough that the IUCN notes a degree of local subsistence use as a protein source.
Mating
Bujurquina are pair-bonding, biparentally custodial cichlids, and Bujurquina syspilus follows the genus pattern. Outside of breeding the fish are gregarious and relatively peaceable, but a forming pair establishes and jointly defends a territory centred on a chosen spawning site. Pair formation is the familiar cichlid sequence of mutual display, lateral posturing and substrate-cleaning, with both partners taking part; because the sexes look so similar, aquarists generally obtain a pair by raising a small group and allowing two fish to bond on their own terms. Once a bond is set, both parents share defence of the site — there is no harem or single-sex brood care here, but a cooperating male and female. Reproduction is aseasonal: the IUCN explicitly notes that breeding is not tied to a particular season, which fits a fish living in stable, spring-fed forest streams rather than one keyed to a strong flood pulse. Territorial aggression is real but modest in scale, in keeping with a 4 in fish; the genus is far better known for diligent parenting than for the brawling associated with larger Neotropical cichlids.
Breeding
The breeding biology is the most interesting thing about this fish, and it is documented for the species rather than merely inferred from the genus. Bujurquina syspilus is a biparental delayed (larvophile) mouthbrooder that begins, paradoxically, as a substrate spawner: the eggs are deposited on a leaf — typically a fallen, partly submerged leaf on the stream bottom — and are guarded and tended by both parents, after which the hatched larvae are taken up into the mouth for protection (FishBase, after Kullander's work). This 'leaf-spawning' strategy, shared across Bujurquina and the related Tahuantinsuyoa, is a halfway house between open substrate spawning and full mouthbrooding: a mobile leaf-borne clutch can be physically shifted away from danger or shifting water before the young are even mouth-ready, and once they hatch the parents carry them. In congeners the mechanics are well observed — in Bujurquina vittata, for example, the male has been recorded picking up and brooding the wrigglers for roughly the first five days — and Bujurquina syspilus conforms to the same biparental, larvophile mode. Clutch sizes have not been precisely tabulated for syspilus, but the genus is a modest-fecundity group: close relatives such as Bujurquina vittata spawn on the order of a few hundred eggs (up to about 400 reported), which is a reasonable expectation here and consistent with FishBase's 'medium' resilience and low fecundity estimate for the species. Both parents continue to guard the free-swimming fry, shepherding them and taking them back into the mouth at any threat. The combination of a small adult size, a shared and undemanding parental routine, and a clear behavioural trigger in clean, warm, soft water makes this a fish that will spawn readily for a patient keeper, even if it rarely reaches the aquarium trade by name.
In the aquarium
Bujurquina syspilus reaches hobbyists only occasionally — it is one of those western-Amazon cichlids that appears in a shipment now and then, usually unlabelled or lumped with related bujurqui species, rather than a fish stocked on demand. That scarcity is a pity, because it is a genuinely manageable and behaviourally interesting cichlid. A pair can be kept in a tank of about 35.5–39.5 in length (roughly 25–30 US gal net volume), though a larger footprint of 47 in is more comfortable if other fish share the space. Being a small, litter-stream fish, it appreciates lower light and a broken sight-line more than open swimming room.
Water chemistry should reflect the soft, warm forest streams of its native Peru and Ecuador. A temperature of 73–81 °F is the documented preference; pH should be kept in the range 6.0–7.0, leaning toward the acidic side; and hardness should remain low, well under 10 °dH for best results (the upper FishBase figure of 15 °dH should be regarded as a tolerance ceiling, not a target). In practice this means water typical of western Amazon setups: RO or soft tapwater lightly buffered, peat filtration optional but beneficial, and a small leaf-litter layer of dried Indian almond or oak leaves on the substrate. That leaf layer is not mere decoration: this species spawns on a leaf, and a flat, stable leaf on the tank floor is its natural spawning surface. Fine sand substrate suits its benthic foraging style and should be provided in preference to gravel. Pieces of driftwood and root, a few broad-leaf plants such as Echinodorus, and shaded retreats complete the setup. Bright lighting and a bare, sterile aesthetic are not this fish's idea of home.
Tankmates should be chosen with some care. Outside the breeding season, Bujurquina syspilus is a relatively peaceable cichlid for its family — a far cry from the brawlers of the Cichla or Cichlasoma world — and it coexists well with small, soft-water tetras, pencilfish, corydoras, and otocinclus in a community tank. Tankmates that are too large, too aggressive, or too competitive for food will suppress these fish, which are modest and easily outcompeted. Other small Bujurquina can share a large tank if territories are broken up by hardscape, but two pairs in a small aquarium will lead to chronic stress. Avoid boisterous mid-American cichlids and large eartheaters; the scale and temperament mismatch is unkind to both parties. When breeding, the pair will defend their leaf and the immediate surroundings with more resolve than their usual mild manner suggests — dither fish help dissipate their attention — but aggression rarely extends far beyond the immediate spawn site.
Feeding presents no difficulties. Like most small acaras this species accepts a wide variety of prepared and live foods: quality flake or micro-pellet as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp and mosquito larvae. Because it is a litter-and-substrate forager rather than a mid-water feeder, sinking pellets or foods dropped to the bottom are more reliably taken than surface flake. Variety and a modest, twice-daily feeding regime suit it well.
Breeding, for a keeper who sets up conditions correctly, is a natural result. The pair will select a flat leaf — or an artificial substitute such as a smooth, slightly tilted piece of slate — clean the surface, and deposit their eggs. Both parents guard the clutch; once the eggs hatch, the larvae are taken into the mouth by one or both parents and carried for approximately the first week of post-hatch development (broadly consistent with the behaviour documented for Bujurquina vittata and other congeners). Free-swimming fry are shepherded closely and can be fed infusoria, micro-worms and newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. The most common keeper mistake is disrupting the breeding pair too early — changing water or rearranging décor during active brooding typically causes the parents to eat or abandon the spawn. A second common error is keeping the water too hard or too alkaline: above pH 7.2 and above about 10 °dH, spawning frequency drops and egg fertility can suffer noticeably. Patience in allowing a group of juveniles to pair naturally, and stability in water conditions and tank layout once a pair is settled, are the two things most likely to produce success with this quiet, uncommonly elegant little cichlid.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Bujurquina syspilus as Least Concern (assessed 21 April 2014, published 2016; assessors Hidalgo del Aguila, Chocano, Anderson & Arguello). The rationale is straightforward: the species is common to abundant, has a wide distribution across the upper Amazon in Peru, Ecuador and Colombia, and almost certainly persists in additional undisturbed areas beyond those surveyed. It carries no CITES listing. The assessment does flag two localized pressures. Oil extraction in the Río Pastaza region of Ecuador threatens one subpopulation through the risk of spills and the discharge of saline production water, and a subpopulation in the Madre de Dios drainage is exposed to habitat degradation from illegal gold mining — though the assessors caution that the Madre de Dios fish may be misidentified and actually belong to a different species, a real possibility given how easily Bujurquina species are confused. The fish gains some incidental protection from occurring in the 'Los Amigos' research concession and the Rimachi (Abanico del Pastaza) Ramsar site in Peru and the Yasuní and Cuyabeno reserves in Ecuador, but it is not recorded from any formally designated protected area, and the assessors call for further study of its distribution, breeding biology and threats. Beyond this species, the western Amazon as a whole faces mounting pressure from hydrocarbon development, gold mining and its mercury contamination, deforestation and road-building — the same forces named in this fish's own threat profile, scaled up across the basin. As a widespread, adaptable stream generalist, Bujurquina syspilus is far less exposed than the basin's many narrow-range endemics, but its status is best read as 'secure for now, in a region under accelerating strain.'
