Bujurquina robusta is a small, deep-bodied acara from the foothill rivers of the upper Ucayali in eastern Peru, one of thirteen species Sven Kullander carved out of the old catch-all genus Aequidens in 1986. It is poorly known in the wild and almost never kept, but it shares the defining habit of its genus: it is a biparental, delayed mouthbrooder that first lays its eggs on a fallen leaf, then carries that leaf — and later the hatchlings themselves — in the parents' mouths. The name simply marks it as the stockier of two otherwise similar headwater species.

Taxonomy & naming

Bujurquina robusta was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in his 1986 monograph 'Cichlid Fishes of the Amazon River Drainage of Peru' (page 273, figures 118-119, plate 29), the same work in which he erected the genus Bujurquina itself. The holotype (Swedish Museum of Natural History, NRM 17583) and six paratypes (NRM 17584) were collected in a tributary of the Río Chinipo, about ten kilometres south of Chicosa on the west bank of the Río Ucayali, in the Ucayali Department of Peru — and that headwater locality remains the anchor of the species. Kullander built Bujurquina to hold an assemblage of biparentally custodial, primitively (delayed) mouthbrooding acaras that earlier authors had lumped under Aequidens; the genus name is not classical but Peruvian, taken from 'bujurqui' (also rendered 'bufurque'), a local vernacular word for these cichlids. Bujurquina is now placed in the cichlasomatine line of the Neotropical subfamily Cichlinae. The species has remained valid and free of synonyms since its description, and recent treatments — Kullander's own checklist in Reis, Kullander & Ferraris (2003), the molecular survey of Chuctaya et al. (2022), and Říčan & Říčanová's (2023) revision of the genus — continue to recognise it. Within the genus it is a close relative of Bujurquina eurhinus of the Madre de Dios, and in Paul Loiselle's annotated 1990 key to the Peruvian species it keys out by a dark predorsal blotch on the nape (rather than a complete bar) combined with a caudal peduncle 12.6-14.7% of standard length and thin lips. Note that two spellings circulate for one of its congeners — Loiselle's 'tambotapae' versus the now-standard 'tambopatae' — a reminder that the early hobby literature on these fish was working faster than the taxonomy.

Morphology

This is a small acara: the maximum recorded size is about 3.5 in in standard length (snout to tail base; roughly an 4.5 in total fish), making it a modest, hand-sized cichlid rather than one of the bruisers of the family. The body is comparatively deep and stout — the trait Kullander singled out in the name, which (per the ETYFish Project) refers to its 'more robust body compared to the otherwise similar Bujurquina eurhinus.' In the geometric-morphometric analysis of Říčan et al. (2023), Bujurquina robusta was one of only three upper-Ucayali Bujurquina that could be told apart on body shape alone, with no overlap from its neighbours in shape-space. Coloration follows the genus template: a brassy-olive to grey-brown ground, a dark midlateral band and a row of lateral blotches, dark dorsal-fin lappets, and a faint but complete suborbital stripe running down from the eye (a character that separates it from congeners such as Bujurquina apoparuana and Bujurquina megalospilus, which lack it). The diagnostic field marks for the species are the dark blotch on the nape just ahead of the dorsal fin and the relatively long, deep caudal peduncle. Like its relatives the caudal fin is rounded to subtruncate rather than streamered. Documented sexual dimorphism in Bujurquina robusta specifically is slight and little-reported, but across Bujurquina the pattern is consistent and is the safest guide here: males grow somewhat larger and longer-finned, while ripe females are deeper- and rounder-bodied — and during brood care the female is the more constant mouth-holder. Treat that as a genus-typical inference rather than a measured fact for this species, which has never had a detailed dimorphism study.

Habitat

Bujurquina robusta is a Peruvian endemic of the western Amazon, restricted to the upper Ucayali drainage — specifically the Río Chinipo catchment of its type locality and nearby clearwater foothill rivers around Atalaya, where early collectors recorded it from a medium-sized 'Klarwasserfluss' (clearwater river). It sits in an awkward biogeographic seam: Říčan et al. (2023) found it in a pocket of lowland within an otherwise foothill band, one of the few species in the genus that does not slot cleanly into the lotic-foothill versus lentic-lowland ecomorph split, reflecting the messy transition zone between the Andean piedmont and the Amazon plain. The IUCN assessment describes it as a fish of clear or black water with diurnal, non-migratory habits, occupying permanent rivers and small freshwater marshes and pools; FishBase characterises it as a benthopelagic fish of slow-flowing or pool-like stretches of river. Carvalho et al. (2009) reported specimens they cautiously labelled Bujurquina cf. robusta from rivers and oxbow lakes (cochas) of the upper Juruá in southeastern Peru, sampled during the July-August low-water season, and georeferenced museum records under the name extend across the upper Juruá into the Brazilian state of Acre — but those eastern records are exactly the 'cf.' material whose identity is unsettled, and the Catalog of Fishes and IUCN both still treat true Bujurquina robusta as a Peru endemic of the Chinipo/Ucayali. In-situ water chemistry has not been published for this species; the genus-typical and habitat-typical figures for these warm, soft, clear-to-blackwater headwaters apply, and FishBase gives a preferred range of about 70–82 °F. Those temperature and depth figures should be read as habitat-typical estimates, not measurements taken at the type locality, which remains essentially unstudied limnologically.

Feeding

No gut-content study has been published for Bujurquina robusta, so its diet is inferred from the genus and from the one ecological note that exists. The IUCN account, drawing on Peruvian fish surveys, calls the species omnivorous; FishBase places its modelled trophic level near 3.4, the value expected for a small generalist that takes both animal and plant material. In practice Bujurquina are opportunistic micro-predators of the leaf-litter and marginal zones — they pick small benthic invertebrates (insect larvae, crustaceans, worms), glean aufwuchs and detritus, and take drifting food from the water column rather than mining the substrate the way the dedicated sand-sifting eartheaters do. As a pool- and margin-dwelling acara of clearwater foothill rivers, Bujurquina robusta most plausibly fills that same modest insectivore-omnivore role in its community, foraging by day over leaf litter and submerged structure.

Mating

Bujurquina are pair-bonding, biparentally custodial cichlids, and the social unit is the mated pair defending a small territory. Specific courtship observations for Bujurquina robusta have not been documented, but the genus pattern — well established from its better-known relatives and from Kullander's original framing of Bujurquina as 'biparentally custodial primitive mouthbrooders' — is reliable here. A male and female form a bond, clean and inspect a spawning surface (characteristically a fallen leaf or other loose, movable object rather than a fixed rock), and jointly hold a compact territory through a courtship of lateral displays and substrate work. FishBase notes the species is 'apparently territorial,' the one behavioural remark on record. Aggression in these small acaras is real but moderate by cichlid standards: it spikes around spawning and is directed at conspecifics and other intruders near the brood, but Bujurquina are not the relentless tank-wreckers that larger Neotropical cichlids can be.

Breeding

The single most interesting thing about Bujurquina robusta is the breeding mode it inherits from its genus, and it is the one reproductive fact actually recorded for the species: it is a biparental delayed (or 'larvophile') mouthbrooder that spawns on a leaf. FishBase states it plainly — 'eggs are deposited on fallen leaves, which may be dragged around; both parents guard eggs and larvae.' This is the hallmark of Bujurquina and a genuinely unusual strategy among Neotropical cichlids. Rather than gluing eggs to a fixed rock or guarding them inside a cave, the pair lays the clutch on a detached leaf or similar portable object; if danger threatens, the parents can pick the whole leaf up and carry it to safety, and once the eggs hatch the larvae are taken into the mouth and brooded there. Because the brooding begins after the eggs hatch (not at spawning, as in the maternal mouthbrooders of the African rift lakes), it is termed 'delayed' mouthbrooding — and because both sexes share the load, it is biparental, with the female typically the principal mouth-holder and the male defending the perimeter. The IUCN account adds that reproduction is aseasonal (not tied to a single flood pulse) and that the species shows parental care. A precise clutch count has not been published for Bujurquina robusta; in comparably sized Bujurquina, spawns run on the order of a few dozen to perhaps one to two hundred eggs, so read any figure here as genus-typical rather than measured. Captive breeding reports specific to this rarely imported species are effectively absent.

In the aquarium

Bujurquina robusta is essentially unknown in the hobby. It reaches exporters in Iquitos only sporadically, and captive husbandry reports specific to this species are absent from the literature; care guidance here is therefore drawn from the genus as a whole, with reference to its known biology. That caveat aside, the fish is not technically demanding, and its modest adult size — a total length of roughly 4.5 in — makes it manageable in a reasonably sized aquarium. A dedicated pair can be kept in a tank of around 25 US gal, though a 120–150-litre footprint gives a breeding pair the spatial breathing room they need to establish separate male and female zones during fry care without constant conflict.

Water chemistry should reflect the soft, warm, slightly acid-to-neutral clearwater streams of the Peruvian upper Ucayali. Target a temperature of 75–81 °F, a pH of 6.0–7.0, and total hardness well below 10 °dH — ideally 2–6 °dH. RO water blended with dechlorinated tap water, or a source naturally low in dissolved solids, achieves this comfortably. Slightly warmer or cooler water (the facts box gives 70–82 °F as the habitat range) is tolerated, but the species likely breeds most readily near the upper end of that band. High water quality and regular partial changes matter more than chasing an exact pH number; like many soft-water western Amazonian cichlids, Bujurquina are sensitive to nitrate accumulation.

Decor should mimic the leaf-litter and driftwood margins the fish inhabit in the wild. A fine-sand substrate, generous quantities of dried leaves (Indian almond, oak, and beech all work), and tangles of bog-wood or roots create both the visual shelter the fish use and, crucially, the loose leaf surfaces they spawn on. Dense planting or a section of floating plants at one end is welcome; dim or diffused lighting suits the species and encourages natural behaviour. A tight-fitting lid is advisable — Bujurquina can jump.

Outside the breeding period Bujurquina robusta is a peaceful fish and can share a tank with other soft-water western Amazonian species of comparable size: small tetras, pencilfish, corydoras, and similarly mannered dwarf cichlids all make reasonable companions. Avoid significantly larger or more aggressive cichlids, and think carefully before housing two Bujurquina pairs together — territory disputes between pairs in a confined space can be relentless. When a pair is guarding eggs or carrying larvae, the parents' tolerance for intrusion drops sharply and tankmates may be harassed; the safest approach for breeding is to keep the pair alone or with a large shoal of fast, mid-water dither fish that can absorb the odd charge without being injured. Difficulty is best rated as intermediate — not because the fish is fragile, but because it is rarely available and the husbandry references are thin.

Breeding follows the signature Bujurquina method: the pair selects a fallen leaf (or other portable, flat surface such as a broad piece of bark or a smooth stone), cleans it thoroughly, and deposits the eggs directly on it. Both parents attend the clutch. Should the pair feel threatened, they will carry the leaf, eggs and all, to a new location — a behaviour that is striking to observe and that a well-decorated aquarium with multiple sheltered areas will reliably elicit. Once the eggs hatch, the fry are taken into the mouths of both parents and brooded there; the female is typically the more committed mouth-holder while the male guards the perimeter. The larvae are released for short periods to feed and recalled when danger is sensed. Fry are small but accept freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and microworm from the first free-swimming stage. A common keeper mistake is removing the leaf substrate before spawning or during early brood care — losing the spawning surface or startling the parents into swallowing the clutch. Provide multiple leaf options and disturb the tank as little as possible once spawning is underway. A second common error is keeping the pair in hard, alkaline water: conditioning and spawning are possible over a range, but soft, slightly acid water is where the genus does its best breeding work.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Bujurquina robusta as Data Deficient (assessed 22 April 2014 by M. Hidalgo del Aguila, published 2016, and flagged as needing updating). The reasoning is straightforward: the species is genuinely rare in collections, known from only a handful of localities for lack of fieldwork, and the existing information is simply too thin to judge its threat status. It is a Peruvian endemic with no occurrence in any protected area, and it appears in Peru's ornamental-fish reporting (Sánchez et al. 2006), so it is harvested at some level for the aquarium trade — but the assessment is explicit that the impact of that extraction has never been quantified and may or may not be a threat to so rare a fish. GBIF holds only about a dozen georeferenced records under the name, a measure of how little hard distributional data exists. Loiselle (1990) noted that the upper Ucayali is visited by Iquitos-based exporters only episodically, so Bujurquina robusta reaches hobbyists rarely and irregularly — it is not a fixture of the trade. The wider backdrop is the western Amazon's accelerating freshwater pressure: deforestation and road-building in the Ucayali and Juruá headwaters (the Acre and Ucayali frontier where this fish lives), sedimentation, and Andean–Amazon hydropower and mining all bear on small-range piedmont endemics far more than on widespread lowland generalists. None of these is documented as a present danger to this particular cichlid, but for a rare, narrowly distributed, under-studied species the honest conclusion is the one the Red List reaches — we do not yet know enough, and the priority is basic survey and ecological work.
