Bujurquina

Bujurquina is a genus of small-to-mid-sized South American cichlids — the 'saddle cichlids' or banded acaras — erected by Sven O. Kullander in 1986 to hold a cluster of species that had long been buried inside the catch-all genus Aequidens. They are the most widely distributed and species-rich cichlid genus of the western Amazon, fish of clear forest streams and Andean foothill creeks in Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, and Brazil, with a few outliers running south into the Paraguay/Paraná system. The single most remarkable true thing about them is how they breed: Bujurquina are delayed, biparental mouthbrooders that first lay their eggs on a loose, movable object — a fallen leaf, a flake of bark, a bit of debris — which the pair can pick up and tow to safety, and then take the eggs and larvae into their mouths to finish brooding. That combination of a portable spawning 'raft' plus oral incubation, shared between both parents, is unusual among Neotropical cichlids and is the genus's defining signature.

Taxonomy & classification

Bujurquina was named by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in his 1986 monograph 'Cichlid Fishes of the Amazon River Drainage of Peru' (Swedish Museum of Natural History). The name is not classical Greek or Latin but local: Kullander built it from 'bujurqui' (also 'bufurque'), a Peruvian vernacular word for these little cichlids (FishBase etymology note). The type species, fixed by original designation, is Bujurquina moriorum Kullander 1986 — a point worth stating carefully, because the genus's best-known aquarium fish is the banded acara B. vittata and it is easy to assume that more familiar species is the type. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is explicit: 'Bujurquina Kullander 1986:244 ... Type by original designation' is Bujurquina moriorum, and the genus is currently valid in family Cichlidae, subfamily Cichlinae (Catalog of Fishes, accessed 2026).

The genus was carved out of Aequidens, the old dumping ground for medium-sized Neotropical 'acaras.' Kullander's 1986 revision split that assemblage apart, recognizing that the mouthbrooding, leaf-spawning species formed a natural group distinct from the substrate-spawning Aequidens proper; several Bujurquina had previously been described in Acara or Aequidens by 19th- and early-20th-century workers (e.g. B. vittata as Acara vittata Heckel 1840, B. syspilus as a Cope 1872 species, B. zamorensis as a Regan 1905 species). In modern molecular and morphological phylogenies Bujurquina sits in the tribe Cichlasomatini and forms, together with the genera Andinoacara and Tahuantinsuyoa, the so-called 'BAT clade' (Bujurquina–Andinoacara–Tahuantinsuyoa) — a western/Andean-margin lineage of cichlasomatines (Musilová, Říčan & Novák 2008, 2009; Ilves et al. 2018). The genus is diagnosed by a suite of skeletal and squamation characters, including a uniserial (single-row) predorsal scale pattern, a notch in the ceratohyal bone for the hyoid artery, and accessory lateral-line scales between certain caudal-fin rays (Careaga et al. 2023). Species counts are a moving target: a 2023 revision counted 18 valid species, and the genus continues to gain members (e.g. B. omagua Říčan & Říčanová 2023 from a 'reverse-flowing' Peruvian river), so the realistic figure today is roughly 18–20 and rising as Andean and Bolivian streams are surveyed.

Distribution & habitat

Bujurquina is centred on the western Amazon and the eastern slope of the Andes. Of the ~18 species recognized in the 2023 review, 15 occur in the western portion of the Amazon basin — the upper Amazon (Solimões) headwaters and their Andean-foothill tributaries across Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and adjacent Colombia and Brazil — making it 'the most widely distributed and species-rich genus of cichlids in the western Amazon of South America' (Říčan & Říčanová 2023, European Journal of Taxonomy). A handful of species sit outside this core: B. mariae, B. oenolaemus, and B. vittata occur in main river channels and southern drainages, with B. vittata reaching the Paraguay/Paraná (La Plata) system as far south as Argentina. This is a genuine source of confusion in references — FishBase's species page for the type-of-the-hobby fish B. vittata gives its distribution as the Paraná/Paraguay drainage, which is correct for that one southern species but is not representative of the genus, whose centre of gravity is firmly in the Andean-foothill upper Amazon.

The characteristic habitat is small, shaded, slow-moving water rather than the big river. FishBase and Kullander describe several species (e.g. B. syspilus) as inhabiting forest clear-water streams running down slopes, with much-reduced flow and abundant forest litter — leaf-strewn creek margins, backwaters, and shallow zones over sand, mud, and submerged wood. Water tends to be soft, slightly acidic to neutral, and warm; FishBase gives B. vittata an environmental range of pH ~6.0–8.0 and 75–82 °F (75–82 °F), and aquarium-oriented sources emphasize soft, acidic, warm water for the Amazonian species, with the southern B. vittata being notably tolerant of harder conditions. The accumulation of fallen leaves in these creeks is not incidental: it supplies both the cover these nervous fish rely on and the very 'rafts' they spawn on (see Reproduction).

Morphology

Bujurquina are typical 'acara'-shaped cichlids — moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed, oval in profile — and modest in size. Most species mature at roughly 3–5 in; FishBase lists B. vittata at a maximum of about 3.5 in standard length, and aquarium accounts put adults of the commonly kept species at around 4–4.5 in total length, so this is a small-to-medium cichlid rather than a tank-buster. The genus's English name, 'saddle cichlids,' points to the most useful field mark: a dark dorsal blotch or 'saddle' marking sitting high on the back beneath the dorsal fin, combined with an oblique dark mid-lateral band that runs back and down from the area behind the eye/operculum toward the caudal peduncle. That slanted lateral stripe, often meeting a vertical bar pattern, plus the predorsal 'saddle,' is the quick visual signature of the group, though the exact expression varies by species and mood and the bars can fade or intensify with stress and breeding state.

Colour is generally understated but can be attractive in good condition. The widely traded banded acara (B. vittata) shows yellow-flushed cheeks with a gold streak above the lateral line, blue-tinged lips, and iridescent turquoise spangling in the unpaired and pectoral fins; mature males develop extended, filamentous trailing tips on the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins and a faint nuchal (forehead) swelling, while females stay smaller, plainer, and shorter-finned (Brooklyn Aquarium Society). Sexual dimorphism across the genus is generally modest, with males running larger and more finnage-developed. The diagnostic characters that actually separate Bujurquina from look-alike cichlasomatines are internal and meristic — the uniserial predorsal scales, the ceratohyal notch, accessory lateral-line scales, and details of the oblique band — rather than anything obvious to the casual eye, which is one reason the genus stayed hidden inside Aequidens for so long and why undescribed, easily confused species still turn up in imports.

Ecology & diet

These are generalist micro-predators of leaf-littered creek floors. Kullander characterized B. moriorum as feeding on insects and insect larvae, small fish, and plant material — a broad, opportunistic diet — and FishBase places B. vittata at a trophic level around 3.5, consistent with a small invertivore-leaning omnivore. In their forest-stream habitat they pick through leaf litter and over sand and wood for aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, and other small invertebrates, taking some plant and detrital material along the way. The shallow, slow, structurally complex water they favour — backwaters and creek edges full of submerged leaves and branches — is exactly the kind of habitat that concentrates this sort of small prey while offering constant cover.

Behaviourally, Bujurquina are comparatively peaceable for cichlids of their size: keepers repeatedly describe the commonly kept species as mild-tempered and not inclined to bully tankmates, with the main exception being the heightened territoriality of a bonded pair around spawning. They are also notably skittish — fast, nervous fish that bolt for cover when startled — a trait directly tied to the antipredator function of their portable-clutch, mouthbrooding reproduction. In their native streams they share space with other small cichlasomatines (including Andinoacara and Aequidens), tetras, and other characins, and the genus's high diversity in the western Amazon reflects fine-scale partitioning across the many isolated foothill drainages, whose connections have been repeatedly rearranged by Andean uplift and river capture over geological time (Říčan et al. 2022; Říčan & Říčanová 2023).

Reproduction

Reproduction is the heart of the Bujurquina story and the trait that most sets the genus apart. They are delayed, biparental mouthbrooders that spawn on a loose, movable substrate. Rather than choosing a fixed flat rock or pit like most Neotropical cichlids, a pair lays its eggs on a portable object — characteristically a fallen leaf, but also a flake of bark, a fragment of wood, or other debris — and the parents can then pick the whole clutch up and tow it elsewhere. FishBase records that B. vittata spawns up to about 400 eggs on fallen leaves 'which may be pulled around, possibly in reaction to predators or water-level changes,' and that 'both parents defend the eggs and take the yolk-sac larvae in their mouth.' This is a true mouthbrooder, but a 'delayed' (larvophile) one: fertilized eggs are tended on the leaf at first, and the developing eggs and/or newly hatched larvae are then taken up orally to finish incubation, rather than being scooped into the mouth the instant they are laid as in the Rift Lake mbuna.

The finer choreography has been described in detail for B. vittata and slots neatly into George Barlow's classification of mouthbrooding modes (Cichlid Room Companion). In Barlow's scheme Bujurquina vittata is 'cedocavus, male-leads': one parent picks the brood up first and carries it for a while before ceding it to the mate. Citing Socolof (1972), Barlow reports that in B. vittata 'the male goes first and broods the eggs and larvae in his mouth for about five days,' after which mouthbrooding duties are shared with the female — a genuinely biparental arrangement in which both sexes incubate. (There is a minor disagreement between sources on emphasis: FishBase's wording stresses that 'both parents' take up the yolk-sac larvae, while the Barlow/Socolof account specifies a male-first sequence with later sharing; both agree the mode is delayed and biparental.) Once free-swimming, the fry are guarded by both parents and, when danger threatens, dart back into the adults' mouths for shelter — keepers describe the pair zooming across the tank at full speed with the brood and the fry vanishing into their mouths to escape (Brooklyn Aquarium Society). The adaptive logic is coherent: a leaf-strewn forest creek with fluctuating water levels and abundant small predators favours a clutch you can physically relocate and then protect inside your own head, and the genus's nervous, bolt-for-cover temperament is part of the same package.

In the aquarium

Only a couple of Bujurquina are seen with any regularity in the hobby — overwhelmingly the banded or 'yellow-banded' acara, B. vittata, with occasional imports of others (e.g. B. moriorum from Peru) — and the genus is fairly described as under-appreciated: hardly any of its species are routinely traded (Practical Fishkeeping). For keepers willing to seek them out, the reward is a peaceful, manageably sized cichlid with genuinely fascinating breeding behaviour you can watch at home. The commonly kept species are hardy and unfussy about food, taking quality pellets and flake along with frozen and live items such as bloodworm, blackworm, and brine shrimp; conditioning a pair on richer live foods reportedly improves egg quality and brood size (Brooklyn Aquarium Society).

Husbandry should mirror the leaf-litter forest creek. A footprint of roughly 30 gallons (about 30 US gal) suits a single pair, with more space if kept in a small group to let a pair form naturally; soft to moderately hard water, near-neutral pH, and warm temperatures around 79–82 °F (78–82 °F) work well, with the Amazonian species preferring softer, more acidic water than the adaptable southern B. vittata. The single most important — and most enjoyable — bit of décor is loose, movable spawning material: scattering leaf litter, pieces of bark, or even lightweight inert objects gives a pair the portable 'raft' their reproduction is built around and lets you witness the leaf-towing and mouthbrooding firsthand (Imperial Tropicals; FishBase). Provide cover (driftwood, plants, leaf litter) to settle these naturally skittish fish, expect a bonded pair to become territorial and protective while brooding, and otherwise treat them as the mild, community-compatible cichlids they are. They are a good choice for an aquarist who wants something off the beaten path — neither a tiny dwarf nor an aggressive 'big American' cichlid — and who specifically wants to observe delayed biparental mouthbrooding in action.

Conservation

There is no genus-level conservation assessment for Bujurquina, and formal IUCN coverage of its species is patchy. Where it exists, the news is reassuring for the widespread fish: the banded acara B. vittata was assessed as Least Concern (assessment dated 2020) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting a broad range across the upper Amazon and the Paraguay/Paraná system and no evidence of major decline; FishBase echoes this Least Concern status and rates the species as of low fishing vulnerability. Most of the narrow-range Andean-foothill species, however, have simply not been evaluated, so 'Least Concern for the one widespread, traded species' should not be read as a clean bill of health for the whole genus.

The realistic concern is habitat and range size rather than the aquarium trade (which takes few of these fish and increasingly works from captive-bred stock for B. vittata). Many Bujurquina are local endemics of small western-Amazon and Andean-margin creeks, and the recent literature keeps describing new, geographically restricted species from individual drainages (Říčan & Říčanová 2023; Careaga et al. 2023) — exactly the profile of fish most exposed to localized threats such as deforestation, sedimentation, agriculture, road-building, and small-scale mining in headwater catchments, even as the genus as a whole is wide-ranging and, in its commonest species, secure. The honest summary: the flagship species is doing fine, but the conservation status of most of the genus is genuinely unknown, and the discovery rate of restricted-range species argues for keeping an eye on the foothill streams that hold them.
