Taxonomy & naming
Bujurquina hophrys was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in his 1986 monograph 'Cichlid Fishes of the Amazon River Drainage of Peru' (page 283), the same work in which he erected the genus Bujurquina itself to hold a group of biparentally custodial, delayed ('primitive') mouthbrooding acaras that had previously been lumped into the catch-all genus Aequidens. The holotype, NRM 17585, is held at the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm, with paratypes distributed among the ANSP (Philadelphia), the Natural History Museum in London, Geneva, Amsterdam and Hamburg. Its type locality is precise: the mouth of a tributary of the Río Pachitea, two to three kilometres downstream of Tournavista, in the Departamento de Huánuco, Peru. Kullander erected the genus with Bujurquina moriorum as its type species and, in the same monograph, named thirteen new Bujurquina at once; the genus now holds eighteen valid species, the great majority endemic to the western Amazon in Peru. The name has never been synonymised — Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists it as valid as Bujurquina hophrys Kullander 1986, a status reaffirmed by every subsequent reviser, including Kullander's own 2003 checklist treatment, Arbour & López-Fernández (2014), Meza-Vargas et al. (2021), Chuctaya et al. (2022) and Říčan & Říčanová's 2023 revision of the genus. There is a small classificatory wrinkle worth flagging: FishBase still files Bujurquina in the subfamily Cichlasomatinae (tribe Cichlasomatini), whereas the Catalog of Fishes places the genus in Cichlinae; the disagreement is one of higher-level arrangement within the Neotropical cichlids and does not affect the species' identity. Bujurquina species are notoriously hard to tell apart, and in the aquarium trade hophrys and its congeners have historically arrived from Iquitos under blanket names such as 'Aequidens mariae' or 'Ae. vittata'; Loiselle's 1990 annotated key (Buntbarsche Bulletin 140) was an early attempt to let aquarists sort them out, and it places hophrys among the species most likely to be exported from the Ucayali. The fish has no established common name in English and is sold, when sold at all, by its scientific name; Spanish-speaking Peruvians simply call it bujurqui, the regional word for any small cichlid.
Morphology
This is a small cichlid. The largest recorded specimen measured 3.5 in in standard length (snout to tail base), which puts the species among the more modestly sized members of an already small-bodied genus — most Bujurquina are dwarf-to-medium acaras of a few centimetres. The body is the typical Bujurquina shape: a moderately deep, laterally compressed oval, with the streamlined proportions associated with life in flowing foothill streams rather than the deeper-bodied build of fishes from sluggish lowland floodplains. Coloration is muted and brownish, organised around the genus' shared scheme of a dark midlateral band and a series of flank blotches. The species was named for, and is diagnosed by, a detail of the head: where the dark band crosses the nape, it broadens conspicuously near the eye socket — the 'eyebrow' that gives hophrys its name. In Kullander's key and in the more recent revision by Říčan and colleagues, hophrys is separated from its relatives by thin lips (not the swollen lips of Bujurquina eurhinus or Bujurquina labiosa), dark dorsal-fin lappets that lack any pale submarginal stripe, and a suborbital marking reduced to an incomplete blotch in the lower-rear corner of the area beneath the eye rather than a full vertical stripe. Sexual dimorphism in Bujurquina is slight and not separately documented for hophrys, so the genus-typical pattern is the honest guide: the sexes are similarly coloured, mature males tend to run a little larger and carry somewhat longer, more pointed dorsal and anal fin tips, and ripe females become visibly rounder in the belly. These are subtle cues, and outside breeding condition the two sexes are difficult to distinguish — a caution worth keeping in mind, since the species' own dimorphism has not been formally measured.
Habitat
Bujurquina hophrys is a Peruvian endemic of the upper Ucayali River system, the great western headwater of the Amazon. FishBase records it specifically from the Pachitea and Aguaytía river basins, and the IUCN assessment maps subpopulations in the Pachitea, the Río Neshuya, the Río Nieva and the Sierra del Divisor region, across an elevation band running from roughly 607–2297 ft above sea level. The estimated extent of occurrence is about 74,500 square kilometres, though large parts of the potential range remain unsurveyed. Within that range it is a fish of clear water and small running channels: FishBase characterises its habitat simply as 'brooks', and the IUCN notes that it lives in clear water and is diurnal and non-migratory. That places hophrys at the foothill, headwater end of the elevational gradient that Říčan and colleagues (2023) showed structures the whole genus — Bujurquina species sort out along their rivers from upland, clear, fast, structurally complex streams down into turbid, warm, slow lowland floodplains, and hophrys, an upper-Ucayali species, belongs to the clearer, higher-gradient brooks rather than the muddy mainstem. No in-situ water chemistry has been published specifically for Bujurquina hophrys, so the figures in the fact box are drawn from the habitat type and from its better-measured congeners rather than from direct measurement of this species' waters, and should be read as defensible estimates flagged as such. Foothill streams of the western Amazon are typically warm but cooler than the lowland mainstem, soft, and close to neutral or mildly acidic; the closely related lowland Bujurquina syspilus is logged on FishBase at around 73 °F with pH up to about 7.0, consistent with that picture. Because it is a small brook fish rather than a lake or deep-river species, its depth range is shallow — on the order of the first metre of water — and no formal depth band exists in the literature.
Feeding
The IUCN assessment is the most specific published statement of diet: Bujurquina hophrys has omnivorous habits with a tendency toward frugivory and insectivory — that is, it takes fallen fruit and seeds along with aquatic and terrestrial insects, the standard fare of a small generalist cichlid working a forest brook. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.4 (an estimate based on its size and close relatives rather than on gut-content analysis), which is consistent with a small omnivore that leans toward animal prey rather than a strict herbivore or a top predator. In the stream community it occupies the role of a mid-level forager: small enough to be prey for larger fishes and birds, large enough to exploit drifting insects and the seasonal rain of fruit and seeds from the gallery forest. The genus as a whole feeds this way, picking food from the substrate, the water column and the surface rather than specialising on any one technique, and there is nothing in the record to suggest hophrys departs from that omnivorous, opportunistic pattern.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour has not been described for Bujurquina hophrys in particular, but Bujurquina is one of the better-studied Neotropical genera for mating system, and the pattern is consistent enough across its species to apply with confidence. These are monogamous, biparental cichlids that form a pair bond and jointly defend a territory and brood — the social system Kullander had in mind when he characterised the genus as one of 'biparentally custodial' mouthbrooders. Pair formation is preceded by mutual display and a period of courtship over the chosen spawning site; both partners then share territorial defence, in contrast to the female-led, single-parent territoriality seen in many substrate-spawning eartheaters. The IUCN notes that reproduction in hophrys is aseasonal — it can breed year-round rather than being tied to a single flood pulse — and that the species shows parental care, both points fully in keeping with the genus' monogamous, brood-guarding habits. As small territorial cichlids, Bujurquina are mildly aggressive around a nest but are not the tank-wreckers that larger Central American or eartheater cichlids can be.
Breeding
The single most interesting thing about Bujurquina, and the reason the genus is worth a hobbyist's attention, is how it broods. Its members are delayed (or 'larvophile') biparental mouthbrooders — the mode that the cichlid behaviourist George Barlow, in his vocabulary for cichlid mouthbrooding, would class as postponocavus and, more precisely, cedocavus. A pair spawns in the open-substrate manner of an ordinary acara, laying adhesive eggs on a firm surface; crucially, that surface is often a mobile one — a leaf or a small flat stone that the parents can pick up and shift to safety. For the first day or two the eggs are simply guarded and fanned where they lie. Only as hatching approaches do the parents take the eggs, and then the newly hatched wrigglers, into their mouths to finish incubation — the 'delay' that distinguishes this strategy from the African rift-lake mouthbrooders, which pick their eggs up at once. In the best-documented congener, Bujurquina vittata, the male leads: he is the first to take the brood and carries it for roughly five days before mouthbrooding duty is shared with the female, after which both parents continue to shelter the free-swimming fry, letting them retreat into the mouth at any threat or to spend the night. Clutch sizes in small Bujurquina are modest — on the order of a hundred or so eggs, in keeping with the genus' small body size and FishBase's note of a fecundity under 1,000 — though no count has been published for hophrys specifically. This combination of substrate-then-mouth brooding, a movable nest, and shared parental care is precisely the behaviour the genus is prized for, and there is no reason to expect hophrys to differ from its relatives in the essentials.
In the aquarium
Bujurquina hophrys is seldom seen in the hobby — it arrives sporadically, if at all, in shipments of mixed small cichlids from Iquitos or Pucallpa and is almost never labelled by species. Keepers who track it down will find a manageable, peaceable cichlid that rewards patience more than it demands technical expertise. A pair can be housed comfortably in a 90-litre tank, though 30 US gal gives the pair enough room to establish a territory and still leave margin for dithers. Because these are brook fish from the foothills of the Andes, the water should be soft to very soft (hardness under about 8° dH is ideal) and close to neutral: pH 6.0–7.2 covers the habitat estimate, and erring toward the slightly acid end of that range is consistent with both the species' clear-water stream provenance and the genus' documented performance in captivity. Temperature anywhere from 72–81 °F is appropriate; a mid-range default of around 75–77 °F suits a species from elevations between 185 and 2297 ft, where nights are cooler than the lowland Amazon norm. Filtration should be efficient enough to hold nitrates low without generating strong current — these are shallow brooks, not rivers, and the fish is not a rheophile.
Decoration should mimic the forest-floor microhabitat these cichlids occupy in the wild. A substrate of fine river sand works well, with a scatter of dried leaves (Indian almond or beech are widely used, and decomposing leaves also support the tiny invertebrates small cichlids pick at). Tangles of driftwood or twisted root, a few smooth pebbles, and low broad-leaved plants — Anubias or Microsorum on wood — complete the picture and double as spawning surfaces. Importantly, leave a few loose leaves of a moderate size on the substrate; in the wild, and in well-documented accounts of congeners such as Bujurquina vittata, a pair will adopt a leaf as their preferred spawning tile and may shift it around the tank before depositing eggs — the leaf is integral to the delayed mouthbrooding sequence, not mere decoration.
For tankmates, choose fish that will not harass a pair in breeding condition and will not be eaten themselves. Other small, non-cichlid South Americans are the safe bet: peaceful tetras (hatchetfish, rummy-nose, emperor tetras), small corydoras and otocinclus, and slender pencilfish can all share the midwater without provoking territorial escalation. Avoid boisterous or similarly sized cichlids, particularly anything that may compete for the same territory or intimidate the pair off their spawning site. Bujurquina hophrys is peaceful by cichlid standards outside breeding season, but a guarding pair will chase intruders with purpose; making sure no tankmate is small enough to be predated by an 3.5 in cichlid is a basic check. Semi-aggressive larger cichlids should simply be excluded.
Breeding follows the genus pattern described in the Breeding section: the pair lays a clutch of roughly a hundred eggs on a leaf or flat stone, stands over them for one to two days, then takes the hatching wrigglers into their mouths, with the male typically brooding first before both parents share duty. The keeper's main job is to leave them undisturbed once spawning has begun — interference or fright during the egg-guarding phase is the single most common reason a pair abandons or eats a clutch before the mouthbrooding stage begins. Live or frozen food (bloodworm, artemia, daphnia, small pieces of earthworm) helps condition a pair and sustains them through brooding, when feeding can be intermittent. Water quality that slips toward elevated nitrates during this period is another common stumbling block; regular small water changes with soft, similarly tempered water are the remedy. The genus-wide recommendation to generalise from Bujurquina vittata where species-specific detail is absent is appropriate here — all published hobbyist accounts point to essentially identical husbandry requirements across Bujurquina species.
Difficulty is low to moderate. The water chemistry requirements are not demanding for anyone who already keeps soft-water fish, and the fish's temperament is forgiving. The real challenge is availability: hophrys is unlikely to appear in a pet shop, and a keeper who wants it specifically will almost certainly need to source it from a specialist South American cichlid importer or from hobbyist-to-hobbyist exchange. Once obtained, it is a rewarding, intellectually interesting fish whose bridging breeding mode — half substrate-spawner, half mouthbrooder — is something that relatively few Neotropical cichlids demonstrate.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Bujurquina hophrys as Least Concern (assessed 21 April 2014 by Hidalgo del Aguila and Chocano, published 2016). The reasoning is that, although the species is known from only a handful of localities, much of its potential range in the upper Ucayali is unexplored and it may well be more widespread than the records show; it is reported to be relatively abundant where it occurs, and several of its known subpopulations — in the Río Nieva and the Sierra del Divisor — face no current threat because the areas are uninhabited. It is not CITES-listed, and any human use is local subsistence fishing rather than commercial trade. The assessment does, however, single out specific, place-based pressures that bear directly on a small clear-water stream fish. In the Río Neshuya, untreated effluent from palm-oil plantations is being discharged into the river, degrading water quality and driving toward anoxic, organically loaded conditions; the same river carries industrial and urban wastewater. In the Pachitea subpopulation, conversion of land to cattle ranching is causing erosion and siltation — and reducing the insect and fruit supply the fish depends on — alongside water pollution linked to illegal drug production. These are exactly the kinds of impact a clear-water, insect- and fruit-eating brook specialist is least able to absorb: it needs clear, well-oxygenated, structurally intact streams, and sedimentation, nutrient loading and deoxygenation strike at all of those. The species' saving grace is its presence in protected land — it occurs within the Zona Reservada Sierra del Divisor — and the genuine possibility that its range is larger than mapped. The wider backdrop is the accelerating pressure on Amazonian headwaters from Andean-foothill deforestation, agriculture and unregulated development, which falls hardest on exactly these small, narrowly distributed upland endemics even when, as here, the species itself is currently judged secure.
