Caprichromis liemi belongs to the small genus Caprichromis, erected by Eccles and Trewavas in their 1989 monograph on the classification of Malawi's haplochromine genera, with Haplochromis orthognathus (Trewavas, 1935) designated as the type species. Caprichromis liemi is the genus's only other member, distinguished from orthognathus chiefly by having thinner gums with more visible teeth and a jaw angled slightly less steeply upward. The genus name pairs Latin capra ("she-goat") with the standard cichlid suffix chromis, a nod to the steep, almost butting profile of the jaws shared by both species. The specific epithet liemi is a patronym; the precise honoree has not been confirmed against a primary source for this article and is not asserted here.
Morphology
Like its congener, Caprichromis liemi is a modestly sized, elongate, laterally compressed haplochromine built for hovering in open mid-water rather than threading through rock. The defining feature of the genus is the head: a steeply angled, upward-tilted mouth built as a battering ram rather than a grasping tool. In liemi the gums are thinner and the teeth more visible than in orthognathus, and the jaw sits at a slightly less extreme angle — the character that separates the lake's two Caprichromis species from one another. As in other Malawi haplochromines, dominant breeding males would be expected to intensify in colour and carry anal-fin egg-spots, while females and subordinate males stay comparatively plain, though detailed colour description specific to this species is limited.
Habitat
Caprichromis liemi is documented from Boadzulu Island and Luwala Reef, both sites in the southern half of Lake Malawi. Like its congener orthognathus, it is expected to be a benthopelagic, open-water associated fish rather than a rock-locked one — a habit that fits a predator whose hunting strategy depends on approaching brooding females from below in open or sand-adjacent water rather than working tight rock crevices. As with all Lake Malawi cichlids, it lives in warm, hard, strongly alkaline water, the stable mineral-rich chemistry that defines the lake.
Feeding
This is where the genus earns its notoriety: Caprichromis liemi is a paedophage, a specialist predator of the eggs and larvae carried by mouthbrooding female cichlids of other species. The feeding method, shared with its congener orthognathus, is startlingly direct — the fish rams the underside of a brooding female's head, and the shock of the blow causes her to gape, spilling some of the developing young she is carrying, which the attacker immediately snaps up. The steeply angled, reinforced jaw is the anatomical tool for that head-butt. Paedophagy has evolved independently more than once among Lake Malawi's haplochromines, since a mouthful of brooded larvae represents a rich, concentrated, and largely defenceless meal; Caprichromis is one of the most specialised and mechanically direct examples of the strategy in the entire lake.
Mating
Like essentially all Lake Malawi haplochromines, Caprichromis liemi is expected to be a polygynous, non-pair-forming species, with no lasting bond between male and female and the male's role ending at fertilisation. A dominant male in breeding condition would intensify in colour and court ripe females with the quivering, circling displays typical of the lake's haps, leading a receptive female through the spawning sequence over open or sand-adjacent substrate. Because the genus is uncommon in collections and rarely observed in the wild, courtship behaviour specific to liemi has not been documented in detail, and this account follows the pattern established for its better-studied congener.
Breeding
Caprichromis liemi is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, the reproductive mode shared across the Malawi haplochromine radiation. A female would lay a small clutch, take the eggs into her mouth almost immediately, and draw in the male's milt by mouthing at his anal-fin egg-spots, fertilising the clutch she already carries. She would then brood the developing eggs and larvae for roughly three weeks without feeding, before releasing free-swimming fry. The irony is direct: the very reproductive strategy that protects a Malawi cichlid's brood inside her mouth is exactly what this genus is built to exploit in other species, making brooding females of any nearby species a target rather than a threat.
In the aquarium
Caprichromis liemi is a genuine specialist's fish, only occasionally available and not suited to a beginner's Malawi tank. Its predatory feeding strategy shapes everything about how it should be housed: a single male with several females in a roomy tank with open mid-water swimming space and modest structure around the margins, rather than a dense rock pile. Water should match the lake — hard, alkaline, and warm — maintained with strong filtration. Fed in captivity, the fish readily takes quality cichlid pellets and meaty frozen foods; there is no need to supply living broods, and none should ever be. The critical consideration is tankmate choice: housing it with actively mouthbrooding females of other species invites exactly the larva-robbing behaviour the genus is built for, so it is a poor fit for a display meant for breeding other haps. Pair it instead with robust, similarly sized Malawi cichlids that are not constantly brooding.
