Aquascape & setup

Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Tramitichromis sp. "Variabilis Likoma" is an undescribed haplochromine recorded from the waters around Likoma Island in the middle of Lake Malawi. Its trade name signals a resemblance to the formally described Tramitichromis variabilis, a southern-lake species, but the Likoma population is geographically well separated from confirmed T. variabilis records and has not been formally assigned to that species — hence the informal "sp." designation rather than a locality variant of the described name. Like all Tramitichromis it is expected to be a sand-sifting invertivore built around the genus's distinctively angled pharyngeal jaw. It carries no authority, no publication year, no FishBase entry, and no IUCN assessment.

Taxonomy & naming

Tramitichromis sp. "Variabilis Likoma" has no formal scientific name of its own. Its trade name places it alongside the described species Tramitichromis variabilis, reflecting a resemblance noted by field workers and hobbyists between the Likoma Island population and that species, but the relationship has not been confirmed by taxonomic study, and the population is treated as a separate, informally recognised form rather than as a locality population of T. variabilis itself. It is placed in the genus Tramitichromis on the strength of the diagnostic pharyngeal jaw geometry — a steeply angled anterior blade on the lower pharyngeal bone — that Eccles and Trewavas used to define the genus in 1989. Likoma Island sits centrally in the lake, a location that has produced a number of locally distinct haplochromine forms; whether this population represents a true disjunct outpost of T. variabilis or a separate lineage that merely resembles it remains an open question pending formal study.

Morphology

A moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed haplochromine built on the standard Tramitichromis plan, expected to broadly resemble the described species T. variabilis in general form, since that resemblance is the basis of the trade name. Beyond that inferred similarity, no separate morphological description has been published for the Likoma population specifically, so no colour pattern or fin proportion should be asserted with confidence here. Described Tramitichromis species range roughly 5.5–8 in total length; T. variabilis itself reaches close to the upper end of that range, and the Likoma form is expected to be broadly comparable, though unmeasured.

Habitat

This form is documented from the waters around Likoma Island, a large island in the central part of Lake Malawi surrounded by a mix of rocky shoreline and open sand. As with other Tramitichromis, it is expected to occupy the sheltered sand or sand-mud habitat that the genus favours rather than the rocky substrate closer to shore. Water conditions around Likoma follow the lake-wide profile of warm, hard, alkaline water, with temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius and pH on the alkaline side of neutral. No depth record specific to this population has been published; the genus generally forages in shallow water, rarely far below 33–49 ft.

Feeding

Tramitichromis sp. "Variabilis Likoma" is expected to feed as all Tramitichromis do, as a sand-sifting invertivore, taking mouthfuls of sediment and filtering out insect larvae and soft-bodied invertebrates through its gill rakers while expelling the inorganic sand. This feeding mode is shared with the related genus Lethrinops and ties the fish to clean sand or sand-mud substrate. No diet study specific to the Likoma population has been published.

Mating

No mating study specific to this form has been published. By analogy with the described species it resembles and with better-studied congeners generally, Tramitichromis is understood to be polygynous and lek-like: breeding males excavate and defend small pits in the sand or mud and display to attract passing females. Females are not territorial and move between displaying males, spawning with the one they choose; no lasting pair bond forms.

Breeding

As in all Lake Malawi haplochromines, breeding is by maternal mouthbrooding. The female takes the eggs into her mouth almost immediately after spawning at the male's pit, then is drawn to the egg-spot markings on his anal fin, taking in milt that fertilises the clutch she already holds. She broods the eggs and larvae for roughly three to four weeks, largely without feeding, before releasing free-swimming fry that receive no further parental care. Clutch size has not been documented for this form; a modest count of a few dozen eggs is expected by analogy with similarly sized congeners.

In the aquarium

Tramitichromis sp. "Variabilis Likoma" is rare in the hobby, and no dedicated husbandry record for this population is available. General Tramitichromis care applies: a deep bed of fine sand is essential, since the fish forages by taking mouthfuls of substrate and sifting it through the gills — coarse gravel should be avoided. The rest of the tank should stay relatively open rather than rock-dominated, with a footprint of at least 59 in to give territorial males room for sand pits.

Water should mirror Lake Malawi conditions throughout: temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, pH 7.7-8.6, and moderately hard to hard water, kept stable. Feed a quality cichlid pellet supplemented with frozen invertebrate foods such as chironomid larvae, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Avoid high-fibre, algae-based foods intended for mbuna, and keep the sand clean to reduce the risk of Malawi bloat. Suitable tankmates are other peaceful sand-dwelling or open-water haplochromines rather than aggressive mbuna. Because this form's relationship to T. variabilis is unresolved, keepers should avoid mixing it with that species to prevent hybridisation.

Conservation

Tramitichromis sp. "Variabilis Likoma" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form without a formal name, has no Red List assessment. Its known range is centred on Likoma Island; if that record reflects a genuinely restricted, geographically isolated population, it would be more vulnerable to local disturbance or concentrated collection than a lake-wide species. No conservation status should be attached to it pending both a taxonomic description clarifying its relationship to T. variabilis and a proper range survey.
