Chaetobranchopsis australis is a small, plate-bodied cichlid of the Paraguay-Paraná lowlands and the Pantanal, the southernmost member of a tiny genus of South American filter-feeders. Where most New-World cichlids hunt or sift the bottom, this fish hangs in midwater and vacuums plankton from the column, straining it through gill rakers so long and dense they gave the genus its name. It is a quiet, brassy, red-eyed inhabitant of warm, almost stagnant swamps and floodplain lagoons, and one of the most specialised — and notoriously difficult — cichlids ever to reach the aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

Chaetobranchopsis australis was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Dwight P. Ward in 1907, in the joint paper 'On further collections of fishes from Paraguay' (Eigenmann, McAtee & Ward, Annals of the Carnegie Museum vol. 4), and figured on plate 44. The describers spelled the epithet australe, treating the genus name as neuter; under prevailing usage it is now written australis (the masculine/feminine adjectival form), and that combination is the one carried by FishBase, the Catalog of Fishes and modern checklists. The type locality is Bahia Negra on the Río Paraguay, and the species rests on a single specimen — the unique holotype, now CAS 66954 (formerly Indiana University 10157). The genus Chaetobranchopsis was erected by Franz Steindachner in 1875, originally as a subgenus of Chaetobranchus, and its name simply means 'Chaetobranchus-like' (the Greek opsis, 'appearance'). It holds only two valid species: the type species Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis of the Amazon, and Chaetobranchopsis australis to the south. The two are very alike; australis carries five hard anal-fin spines (versus usually six in orbicularis) and the lower of its two flank stripes tends to spill as black pigment across the belly. Both genera — Chaetobranchopsis and its sister Chaetobranchus — were last revised together by C. Tate Regan in 1906, and both are filter-feeders. Their placement on the cichlid tree has shifted with each method: Regan (1906) and Kullander's morphological work set the chaetobranchines on a basal branch (Kullander, 1998, allied them with Astronotus in the subfamily Astronotinae), while molecular studies (Farias et al., 2000) instead recovered them as the sister group of the eartheaters (Geophaginae). FishBase currently files the genus under Astronotinae.

Morphology

This is a deep, strongly compressed, almost disc-shaped little cichlid. Reported sizes are modest and vary with how they are measured: Kullander's checklist treatment (2003), followed by FishBase, gives a maximum of about 4.5 in standard length, and the importer Aquarium Glaser cites 4.5–5.5 in for trade fish; Wayne Leibel, who kept the species repeatedly, notes that the largest adults (around 10 in total length) develop 'grandly produced' filamentous extensions of the dorsal and anal fins, so the upper figures reflect these trailing streamers rather than body bulk. The base colour is a metallic silvery to brassy sheen across the flanks, each scale finely edged, with the lower part of the head shading to yellow or bright yellow and the upper angle of the gill cover flecked reddish-brown. The iris is a striking blood-red. A large dark blotch sits in the middle of each flank, just under the upper lateral line, and two longitudinal stripes — one from the eye to the upper caudal peduncle, one from the operculum to its lower edge — are present but behaviourally variable, fading and re-emerging with the fish's mood. The mouth is the diagnostic apparatus: a small, weakly toothed, protractile mouth that the fish can extend forward into a short tube. Inside, the first gill arch bears very long, fine, densely packed (setiform) gill rakers, the structure that defines the genus and underpins its feeding. There is no obvious sexual dimorphism in coloration; mature males tend to grow the longest fin filaments, but the sexes are otherwise hard to tell apart outside breeding condition.

Habitat

Chaetobranchopsis australis is a fish of the southern lowlands of tropical South America. The Catalog of Fishes gives its distribution as the Paraná River basin in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay; in practice that means the Río Paraguay and its floodplain (the Pantanal and the Gran Chaco wetlands), the lower Paraná near the Paraguay confluence in Argentina, and, to the northwest, the Río Guaporé/Mamoré drainage on the upper-Amazon side of the divide in Bolivia and adjacent Brazil. The epithet australis ('southern') captures exactly this: it is the southern counterpart to the Amazonian Chaetobranchopsis orbicularis. It lives in swamps and flooded ground with shallow, almost stagnant water that may be either clear or heavily loaded with sediment — a quiet fish that shelters among stands of aquatic plants or in the tangle of tree roots, and is often found just beneath rafts of floating water hyacinth (Eichhornia). These are warm, soft, plankton-rich waters. FishBase summarises a tolerance of pH 6.0–8.0, hardness 1–16 dH and 75–84 °F, while Staeck and Linke, collecting the species in the Río Mamoré drainage of Bolivia, recorded very turbid but very soft, acidic whitewater: pH around 6.6, about 1.5 °dGH, 1 °dKH, and roughly 84 °F. The water there teemed with small freshwater shrimp, which those authors suspected were a staple of its diet. Because it strains suspended plankton, the species is essentially restricted to standing or slow waters large and productive enough to keep food in suspension. The depth it occupies is correspondingly shallow — the floodplain habitat is rarely more than a metre or two deep — and the fish forms part of a rich community that can include Chaetobranchus flavescens, Pterophyllum scalare, Heros, Mesonauta, Hypselecara temporalis, the armoured catfish Hoplosternum littorale, and the predatory Hoplias.

Feeding

Chaetobranchopsis australis is a suspension-feeding planktivore — among cichlids, an unusual trophic guild it shares only with its three chaetobranchine relatives. Rather than gulping prey or sifting sand, it hovers in midwater and 'pump-filters': it extends its protractile mouth into a short tube, draws a mouthful of water in, and forces it back out over the gills, where the very long, dense, setiform gill rakers strain out the suspended plankton — small crustaceans, micro-invertebrates and other particles — while the water escapes. The gill covers open and close rhythmically and in reverse synchrony with the mouth, so the fish appears to be steadily breathing its food. Its weak dentition confirms it is no predator. Observers have watched the species draw water 'like a vacuum cleaner,' and field collectors have linked it to dense swarms of small freshwater shrimp in the Bolivian Pantanal. It is not a wholly obligate filterer, though: in captivity the fish has been seen scraping algae from stones and wood and filtering organic mulm, and individuals will mouth and sometimes swallow larger items. In its floodplain community it occupies the planktivore niche, alongside the closely related Chaetobranchus flavescens with which it can co-occur.

Mating

Almost nothing is known about the social and reproductive behaviour of this fish in the wild. It is described as quiet and non-predatory, sheltering in vegetation and roots, and in captivity it has proven strikingly peaceful toward both conspecifics and tankmates — keepers have housed groups with 'very little in the way of conspecific aggression,' a marked contrast to the territorial pugnacity of most cichlids. The related Chaetobranchus flavescens has shown courtship from young adults of 6–7 in, suggesting these are not late-maturing fish, but for Chaetobranchopsis australis itself no courtship sequence, pair-formation or spawning behaviour has been documented. FishBase records flatly that the species 'has never been spawned in the aquarium nor are there reports of any spawning in nature,' and the importer Aquarium Glaser counts it among the very few cichlids whose breeding behaviour is 'absolutely unknown.' What little can be inferred comes from the genus: by analogy with its congeners and chaetobranchine relatives it is presumed to be a substrate-spawning, biparental cichlid rather than a mouthbrooder, but this remains an educated guess rather than an observation.

Breeding

The breeding of Chaetobranchopsis australis has not been documented, in nature or in the aquarium. Despite the species having been in the German hobby since the 1930s and imported sporadically ever since, there is no confirmed spawning report; the same is true of every member of the genus and of the sister genus Chaetobranchus. The presumed mode is biparental substrate spawning: aquarium fish have been observed cleaning stones in the manner of open or cave brooders, which is why the species is tentatively classed as a substrate spawner rather than a mouthbrooder, but no eggs, clutch, larval development or parental sequence have been described. A genus-typical clutch size therefore cannot be given with any confidence; congeneric and related geophagine-grade substrate spawners commonly lay on the order of a few hundred eggs, but no figure for Chaetobranchopsis australis exists in the literature. The single suggestive record is from Don Conkel, who released his Chaetobranchopsis australis into outdoor Florida ponds and reportedly obtained reproduction under those semi-natural, plankton-rich conditions — a hint that the obstacle to breeding is less behavioural than environmental, hinging on the abundant live plankton the adults need to come into condition and the fry would need to feed. Replicating the rich, warm, soft floodplain biotope, with seasonal triggers and a standing bloom of small live food, is the avenue most likely to yield a first captive spawning.

In the aquarium

This is emphatically a specialist's fish, and an honest account must say so: the chaetobranchines are among the most difficult South American cichlids to keep alive, and many imported Chaetobranchopsis australis have simply wasted away. The reason is the diet. A planktivore built to strain a continuous suspension of small live food does not thrive on the pellets and flakes that satisfy most cichlids, and fish that arrive thin from the wild — as they often do — frequently slide into the 'knife-edge belly' decline and die over weeks even as they appear to feed. Wayne Leibel, who tried the species several times, lost every group this way; the keepers who succeeded did so by treating live food as non-negotiable. Lee Newman kept a dozen healthy for about six months on heavy feedings of live brine-shrimp nauplii supplemented with frozen daphnia and zooplankton, and Dan Fromm maintained a colony for several years in a 70-gallon tank on live adult brine shrimp and Daphnia (which they filter) plus frozen bloodworm and flake (which they simply swallow). The practical lesson: offer abundant, frequent, filterable live foods — Artemia, Daphnia, Cyclops — and regard prepared foods as a bonus, not a staple.

Housed correctly, the fish is otherwise undemanding and remarkably peaceful. A group does better than a pair, and conspecific aggression is minimal, so a roomy tank of perhaps 55 US gal or more for a small group is reasonable; keeping them by themselves, or with calm, non-competitive dither fish such as small tetras, avoids feeding competition that a slow, deliberate filter-feeder will always lose. Water should mirror the warm, soft, slightly acidic-to-neutral floodplain: roughly 79–84 °F, pH around 6.4–6.8 (the species tolerates pH 6–8 and a fairly wide hardness range, 1–16 dH), with gentle flow, soft substrate, and structure in the form of driftwood, roots and floating plants for cover. They are not especially shy even in sparse tanks. No one has bred them in aquaria, so there is no proven spawning protocol; the most promising approach mimics the wild — a large, mature, planktonrich system with seasonal warmth, as suggested by the one report of reproduction in outdoor ponds. In short: easy to please on water, hard to keep fed, and best left to aquarists prepared to culture live food continuously.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Chaetobranchopsis australis as Least Concern (assessed 5 November 2020 by R.G. Frederico, published 2023; population trend unknown). The assessment notes a wide distribution across the swamps and flooded grounds of the Paraguay-Paraná lowlands and lists no specific threats to the species. It carries no CITES or CMS listing and is considered harmless to people; it is of negligible commercial interest and only sporadic ornamental interest, reaching the aquarium trade in small, irregular numbers. As a widespread habitat generalist of the floodplain it is far less exposed than the basin's narrow-range endemics. The broader backdrop, however, is the mounting pressure on the Paraguay-Paraná fluvial corridor — one of the world's last great free-flowing river systems, running some 3,311 mi from the Pantanal to the Río de la Plata — where proposed waterway dredging and channelisation, dam construction, wetland conversion and altered flood-pulse regimes threaten the standing, plankton-rich floodplain waters on which a filter-feeder like this fish depends. None of these is recorded as a present danger to Chaetobranchopsis australis specifically, but they are the pressures against which its long-term status should be read.
